This song right here is one that personally I hold close. I can relate to this video in every aspect and every word. ENJOY! [xD
I can't, I won't, I can't, I won't
Let you leave
I don't know what you want
You want more from me?
She said to him
"I want you to be a father
He's your little boy and you don't even bother
Like "brother" without the R
And he's starting to harbor
Cool and food for thought
But for you he's a starver
Starting to use red markers on his work
His teacher say they know he's much smarter
But he's hurt
Used to hand his homework in first
Like he was the classroom starter
Burst to tears
Let them know she see us
Now he's fighting in class
Got a note last week that say he might not pass
Ask me if his daddy was sick of us
Cause you ain't never pick him up
You see what his problem is?
He don't know where his poppa is
No positive male role model
To play football and build railroad models
It's making a hole you've been digging it
Cause you ain't been kicking it
Since he was old enough to hold bottles
Wasn't supposed to get introduced to that
He don't deserve to get used to that
Now I ain't asking you for money or to come back to me
Some days it ain't sunny but it ain't so hard
Just breaks my heart
When I try to provide and he say 'Mommy that ain't your job'
To be a man, I try to make him understand
That I'm his number one fan
But its like he born from the stands
You know the world is out to get him, so why don't you give him a chance?"
So he said to him
"I want you to be a father
I'm your little boy and you don't even bother
Like "brother" without the R
And I'm starting to harbor
Cool and food for thought
But for you I'm a starver
Starting to use red markers on my work
My teacher say they know I'm much smarter
But I'm hurt
I used to hand my homework in first
Like I was the classroom starter
Burst to tears
Let them know he see us
Now I'm fighting in class
Got a note last week that say I might not pass
Kids ask me if my daddy is sick of us
Cause you ain't never pick me up
You see what my problem is?
That I don't know where my poppa is
No positive male role model
To play football and build railroad models
It's making a hole you've been digging it
Cause you ain't been kicking it
Since I was old enough to hold bottles
Wasn't supposed to get introduced to that
I don't deserve to get used to that
Now I ain't asking you for money or to come back to me
Some days it ain't sunny but it ain't so hard
Just breaks my heart
When my momma try to provide and I tell her 'That ain't your job'
To be a man, she try to make me understand
That she my number one fan
But its like you born from the stands
You know the world is out to get me, why don't you give me a chance?"

My dad was there to provide, support me and give advice which but he didn't protect me, he beat on my mother in which caused separation and wasn't approachable when I had an issue with him...he would just shun me or deflect with verbal abuse...and that caused me to lose respect for him and that ended our relationship...

I dropped more than a tear to this song. Parents divorced when I was five and since then I've never spent more than a couple days a year with my dad. He was there financially but absent from my life. At school, I fought hard and didn't study for shit. I used to drive my mom crazy and she tried but I didn't want her, she couldn't do everything. We grew apart, as two very different people. I still love her and recognize her efforts. And although he's far and emotionally unavailable, I love my dad.

So I did have a great father and I couldn't be more thankful and I always let him know, but about 10 years ago my ex took my first kid away from me and I would just sit alone and cry to this song, feeling like, even though it wasn't my choice, these words were being spoken to me. There's no happy ending to that but today I have 2 kids, one is my fiancee's from a previous relationship and I do everything I can to make sure they never have to feel like this. I still fuck up a bit sometimes but I'm always there and do my best to teach them from my mistakes and help them grow to be the best they can be in life, all because of THIS song. Thank you, Lu.

I worked so hard to get AB honor rolls in 3rd grade so low grade students had no exuse me and my dad are at a disadvantage therfore I rely on god to help me through it... Everywhere I go my generation becomes worse so that doesn't help but im still hanging on... Im proud of the kids that have no father because my dad cares about me. In return I do the best I can for him... It rests in gods hands to see how mg childhood turns out. PRAY FOR THE CHILDREN. :(

For all the Grandpas, Uncles, and Big Brothers if you know that your little brother, sister, nephew, niece, or grandkids don’t have a father in their life then you be the Father figure. Even if you were raised without a father you still have to be the man that they will look up to. I am 20 years old and as of now I consider myself as a parent because I told myself that I have to be there for my nephew and niece since their fathers can’t be there for them. Let’s make our boys become men and our girls feel protected. Thank you.

This song really hits home for me. I didn't meet my father until I saw him in a casket at his wake in March of 2010. I wasn't sad I was pissed cuz I tried to get in contact to meet me, my wife and kids about 4 years prior to him getting cancer. To all these dead beat fathers, grow up, stop being selfish and raise your kids. You'll be suprised at how much it will do for them.

My daughter is 10 yrs. old…hip-hop deep, this song was a lesson that motivated me to be the best Father I can be that is always there for her….I grew up with both parents. So the song related to me in terms of always being there when I did have a child, and I am…🙏🏾

It's genius because the kid understands exactly what the mom was telling the father. Hearing the mom say the words then hearing the kid say almost the same exact words, kinda had an effect on me personally.

Tears...truly physical tears flowing thinking over my life and my people after me that had to struggle against a world we did not know without the leadership we deserved. Heard this song thousands of times, just hit home today in more ways then one. Looking at my city Chicago and the devastating we are going through. Not all the blame belongs to the absentee fathers by way...wanted that to be known.

Its a shame how underrated and underapreciated lupe really is....He has incredible word play, a very lucid voice, perspicous flow, and INSANELY creative metaphors...He can literally do it all. Yet, no one even mentions him in their top 10's. That is IGNORANCE right there.

The only song that I can think of that hit me close to the heart. This is poetic, and I can relate. Actually brought a lump in my throat just thinking about it. Can't listen to it long without getting emotional, and the second verse really hits home every time I hear it. Track is amazing.
