I’m dedicating this song in memory of Tyre Nichols, who was pulled over for what was supposed to be a ‘routine’ traffic stop that ended with him being murdered by officers with the Memphis Police Department. Now you can say you don't like his style, you may not even like his music. But to call someone overrated without knowing their importance, is stupidity on a level that can't be explained. Rap has changed and will continue to do so. There was a time when it was ever evolving and now its become rather stagnant. No one is trying to take it further. However over 35 years ago, Rakim did just that. He changed the way people would rhyme forever. Its his template that was used to develop the artform. So like him or not, you can't deny his essential contribution to Hip-Hop.

Lupe describes my journey with skateboarding so vividly in this song. I met many personalities through it, this song makes me tear up every-time because I think about those days,the innocence, I even remember the morning I first heard this track skating through the neighborhood with my homies. This hits hard because my the majority of my crew has passed on. These days I skate alone, it’s a little bit hard for me to make friends on a deeper level because I’m so desensitized to death and passing of so many people I shared many memories with. But everyday I push forward and commemorate my life for those who didn’t have the chance to. Although it wasn’t where i thought or where we thought we would be, it’s a life man. This comment is for y’all.

This was a amazing time for hip hop. The culture was literally transforming from gangster rap into a more relatable fun culture of creatives. 2006 was the year i graduated high school and its crazy how so much has changed. This was the beginning of corporations capitalizing off sneakers and japanese street wear became super popular too. I love watching hip hop evolve and i cant wait to see what the next generation is going to do.

Could be that the boy Lupe talks about it a kid who fell into drugs early on in his life and later met a chick who was addicted too. When I was a little kid I was terrified of riding a skateboard and didn't want to learn how to. But this was my favorite song and I would always imagine some guy skating till night fall on the streets of my hometown because he loved it so much. When you think about it, this song is a great metaphor for life. 🤔 You "kick" at life when it puts heavy obstacles in your way, since legs are the largest muscle groups within the human body. If you are in a leadership role, at times you will "push" your personal wants & desires to the side in order for the greater good, i.e., caring for your family & community as a whole. During the moments when life is smooth & chill, you are able to "coast" and enjoy the feeling of a cool breeze on your face. Lupe Fiasco, the poet... Dope! 💯.

Not ashamed to admit. This track helped me grind to push through and finish college. When whom I thought was my life partner left(divorce) went to bed hungry since nobody wants to hire a college student and nearly had to deal with false accusations of micro-aggression by some brainwashed feminist, where at any moment I could be expelled since a male student's word has little merit. I was alone in an alien town and quitting would cross my mind. I'm about to pick up my cap and gown and I know driving by the sidewalks I took to get to my classes with this track playing is gonna make me break down for grinding through all the bullshit I had to deal with. As a skateboarder, when this song came out people actually hated on Lupe for “appropriating skate culture”. But I was just happy we were getting some representation and had our own song! I woke up and this video was playing on MTV and I was instantly enamored. It broke down every skater’s experience to some extent: Falling for skating, becoming obsessed with landing tricks, skating everywhere, getting kicked out of spots and even trying to date a skater girl 😂. Lupe I hope you know I still rock this song these days and skateboarding appreciates you. 🙏 P.S. There is no feeling like landing your first kickflip! 🛹
