thought I would share this technique that I've been doing for the past month or so on my baits. I soak the bottles of etex for 15min in the hottest tap water you can get. it changes the viscosity of the epoxy and has minimal bubbles after mixing and after application. it's pretty amazing how much better my baits come out using this method. figured to share

the vast majority of people who ask me about lure making stuff are from outside Finland so in light of that it makes perfect sense that i do these tutorials in English. Also most finns should know English enough that following along should not be too difficult.

Thanks, I appreciate the input. I understand what you're saying however, these lures are for muskies so it might be a reverse to try a softer epoxy. Thanks for the tips, I haven't tried that formula. I figured maybe the West System would be alot more durable since it's made for marine use

Depends if your scale is accurate enough in smaller weights ( i usually mix patches smaller than 10g in total) and mine is not so i personally prefer to use the way i do in the vid. it does not really matter what method you use, both of them are accurate enough to get a hard surface on your lures
@SolarfallBaits

its best to add the second layer when the lower layer is still "soft" this way the 2 will chemically bond to each others forming a thicker more shock/ teeth proof finish.

@arisingartist i beg to disagree cos heat does cause the epoxy to have much lower surface tension thus makes the bobbles burst more easily. also there is another reason why an extra heat source while getting rid of the bobbles is advantageous, is the way it helps to speed up the geling process and makes the resin harden faster.

ya i got one Re-clear coating right now as a trial to see if it smooths out the spots where it didn't flow into, seems the spots are always where the plastic has the texture of the Gills/scales, so the baits are not smooth to begin with which could be the problem of me applying to Thin of a first coat, ill find out in this 2nd attempt.

@arisingartist i do have a small digital scale but the damn thing is not very accurate in smaller weights so cos of that i don't use that method myself, so far just measuring it from the pouring cups has worked pretty well for me. i guess it depends what method your used to too

the curing time obviously is effected by the surrounding temperature, not too sure how humidity effects since there is never really humid in my apartment, i usually let the baits cure about 16h before even touching them.

have to say i have never had such issues my self so i really dont know the right answer to that but i guess what i would do os to wait the lure to dry and then maybe add another coat and see if that will make the bait have a smooth surface

@arisingartist Though correct, The heat also expands the enclosed bubbles and causes them to pop, Not to mention the heat helps the clear dry and get a smoother finish. But make sure you also are moving the heat gun or it will burn up the paint, Been there done that.

My lures are hardwood maple, specially dried, assembled, completely sealed, cured, painted and baked at a low temp to remove any trapped vapours etc. The epoxy resin is carefully applied and allowed to completely cure over several days. The coating seems to crack after they hit colder water, say below 15 ft in the water. I am now considering a more expensive marine use epoxy such as the 'West System' or the more elaborate UV light system.
@SolarfallBaits
@SolarfallBaits 4 жыл бұрын
The problem you described has happened to me only once and it was most likely caused by not doing a good job with the sealing. Also it could be there you store your baits. Sudden temperature changes could cause the wood expand especially when its hot and causing the epoxy finish to crack. But its also possible that they changed the formula since this video was made, after all its 8 years old now. You might want to try true coat epoxy. Its slightly softer than other epoxies that cure rock hard, might help you with your issue.

a few questions 1) a few times I have brushed the epoxy on and it started streaking the paint. do you clear over your paint, and then epoxy? 2)do you apply the epoxy extremely thin? I often have problems with it running and hardening over the eyelets.

Quick question....schoolboy error. i have sprayed up some lures and last night mixed up some envirotex lite to do the topcoat......all went well with the topcoat....after 10 minutes got on some heat to rid them of any air bubbles.......left on the wheel overnight to dry....woke up this morning and the lures are still "TACKY"...i obviously did not put in the same amount of hardner to resin mix....my question is this...what can i do?? can i make up another small mix and re-apply over my lures.

1. I dont it must be a reaction with the type of paints that your using, you could tr y if using something like 2k spray could remedy that, 2 .I don't know if you could call it extremely think but i guess the layers that i put are rather thing, its always better to have lots of thin layers than few thick once, the surface is usually more smooth with many layers.

Some people warm the plug and epoxy, and thin the epoxy? You do not? Doesn't the epoxy harden when you let it sit? Maybe yours in longer set? 30 minutes? Do you do multiple coats? I made my first batch of plugs, now I have to epoxy for the 1st time. Just wanted to get your opinion. Thanks
@SolarfallBaits
@SolarfallBaits 4 жыл бұрын
I dont see any need to thin the epoxy im using that usually messes up with the properties anyway. I usually let the epoxy to stay in the cup for 10 minutes and then brush it on. Thats usually plenty of time for the bobbles that came from mixing it to rise to the surface and pop. Once the lure is covered in epoxy i give it a little heat from the heat gun and that let it sit on the rotating wheel until its cured

SolarBaits agreed. Measuring by both weight and volume is the best way to ensure quality batches. I also notice how many people skip the step of transferring the mixture to a new cup and continuing to mix for about 5 minutes total. I used to do the same and have found that step to be the game changer for me. I’ve yet to have a bad batch since doing this. Thanks Solar, you’ve been instrumental in my journey of lure building and I really appreciate it.

it depends on the epoxy some smell more than others, even if there was no smell i would do the epoxing in a well ventilated space

if the next patch comes out tacky too then you have a problem with your epoxy ( it does have a shelf life) how ever if that does not happen and it hardens properly you might have not mixed the epoxy well enough in your earlier batch.
