Luther Allison: 8/17/1939 - Before he was known for his pulse-pounding performances and powerhouse guitar prowess, this bluesman taught himself to play the guitar shortly after moving to Chicago with his family at age twelve. He sharpened his skills and frequented the blues clubs throughout the Windy City, where he would often have the chance to sit in with a numerous giants of the genre. In 1967 signed to Delmark Records, released his debut album two years later, and built a strong following off of his performances. He signed to Motown Records in the early 70′s before departing for Europe in 1977, where he lived and worked for a number years. Signed to Alligator Records, he returned to the United States in the early 90′s where his popularity erupted, boosted not only by universal critical acclaim (he would win 5 Blues Music Awards in 1996 alone) but also a plethora of appearances at festivals. He enjoyed his rejuvenated career, both on the road and in the studio, until his tragic passing in 1997.

I remember that gig - being not live in East-Berlin but in Hamburg watching it on the telly. We didn't have VCR then so I recorded just the audio on a tape recorder and played that goddamm tape so many times that I still know every announcement, every break, and of course Luthers Licks of that gig. Fantastic gig, really brilliant. I've seen that band a few times in the years before that - they were always great. Zox, that maniac on the bass broke TWO stings on a night in Hamburg's Fabrik. Have very rarely seen a bass player breaking one string, never again anyone who broke two! This line-up become my favoruite LA-line-up. Around the time of "Bad love" I had the chance to meet Luther in Hamburg and have a long chat with him, even managed to play some blues licks with him. He was my bluesman. Maybe Muddy and Otis and Jimmy were more important guitarrists, but he was around when I was out to see Blues and he bloody well taught me the lot. What a loss. But then: What a gift to mankind!

I loved most of all when he was telling stories, like "Last night I met a woman..." and when he jumped from the stage to walk around in the public... Luther - we love you and we will never forget you! Hope you have a good time up in the skies with your "boss"! Let the good times roll!

I've seen him with 12 years. He asked me after the show to come backstage and signed a poster. The whole band signed it actually. Must have been 1995 or so in Germany Pumpwerk. He wrote: For Tido. Luther Allison 1995. I still have it. He told me if I will ever be in los Angeles I believe, I should tell bb king, he should let me into his club. He was so kind.

I received the gift of seeing him twice live in Paris in 1995 and 1997 along with his son Bernard before his death that summer. I will forever remember sitting on the edge of the stage with my best buddy listening and witnessing a great man and musician. Even better I sat in a small cafe in Paris late one night and there he was sitting enjoying a local blues band. There were about 20 people in this little place when he was invited on stage to play a couple of tunes with an 8-year-old drummer. That was cool! :-). RIP Luther and my heart will always hold a piece of your music in. :-)

Just read today that in 2000, the Chicago Sun Times called Luther Allison the Bruce Springsteen of the blues, and after watching this, I get it. He connected with his audience awesomely, blew 'em all away with his talent, and looked good doing it!

I used to go see Luther at the Lazy J Saloon in Bloomington, IL in the 80s. I never saw him on a big stage. Luther Jr. lived next door to me, but unlike his brother Berhard, he didn't play music.
