In 1984, my wife and I were barely married 15 months when I was sent to Turkey (USAF) for one year. I was so heartbroken to be away from the love of my life that I would sit in my dorm room and listen to this song often (vinyl) and miss my wife to no end. Even today when I listen to this amazing song it brings me back to the saddest year of my life. My amazing wife is still with me and in October we will celebrate our 40th anniversary. I have all of Luther's albums, but never saw him in concert. He had an amazing voice and I kick myself to this day for never going to see him.

Oh that's too bad . I have seen Luther Vandross live in Germany in 1987 and 1993. I didn't know Luther Vandross until 1987, when an acquaintance of mine took me to this concert. I was frozen like a pillar of salt and the music opened my soul. I stood 2 meters away from the stage and all around me only American soldiers who were close to tears. From that concert on, I bought all his records and remain faithful to the music of Luther Vandross to this day. It's a pity that you could never see him live, I would have liked to see him live. Yup. I was in my car and I was listening to the very beginning of "a house is not a home" and recorded it to my friend on WhatsApp with me saying when God made heaven and a voice, this is what he had in mind. (His voice is chocolate silk)

Seriously? Luther's voice was a whole instrument unto itself, no inner ear, no tracks, no nothing, he spent nearly 20 years singing backing for EVERYBODY WHO WAS ANYBODY, he was in complete demand, the engineer running the board barely had to do anything but level the instruments, Luther's voice was a once in a lifetime gift from God, fun fact* he sang backing on David Bowie's Young American's from the album of the same...he was a true artist, perfect pitch❤I'm sad he spent his entire career in the closet, really sad😢

I don't think they're overlooked at all. You can't help but notice them and feel them in this song. If you can't then you have serious listening issues. Nate Adderly Jr. and background singers lead by Lisa Fischer,is the tightest combo I've ever heard. I've seen him in concert about 8 times and was never disappointed.

Michael Barkley Luther Vandross was a vocal prodigy and his voice is the platinum standard of what all male vocalists should be. There aren't enough superlatives to describe how awesome Luther was. I loved the way he sung live. He was the rare artist who could sing a live vocal performance in a million different ways and make it sound better than the studio version. His ability to play with melody was absolute genius. I miss Luther very much, may he always R.I.P.

I was going through a divorce when this song came out! My brother called me on the phone and said that Luther came out with a new song and proceeded to play it over the phone! I was completely devastated… at that time the hurt was bigger than I was… many years later, I’m bigger than the hurt! Every time I hear this song, it reminds me God is there to guide me only if I let Him! I used to pray and take matters into my own hands…. Big mistake! Now I pray and just be still! God is so wonderful and it took me almost a lifetime to see this! At last I have found Him! Amen! ❤

Because that's where he started out as, he was one of the most sought out backup singer before he went solo, he sung backup for David Bowie to Aretha franklin, he understood that background is vital and adds on so much to the song

The only time I ever cried when I heard of the death of a singer was the day I heard Luther has died. All these years later his voice and the vocal arrangements etc still brings tears to my eyes and a lump to my throat. There will never be another voice like this - certainly not in my lifetime - and I am 70 this year.

I was his hair guy until he had the stroke. He missed an appointment with me the morning ...never showed and no one answered the phone.told everyone that this man had never missed an appointment or showed up late in over 5 years. Saw on CNN ticker later that night he had the stroke. The coming Sunday was his birthday and the Tuesday was the release of the Dance with my father album. That was super sad. I listen to his music some times but not often. I can't explain what it does to me. This man gave the privilege of seeing his private side and he was generous. I will forever be grateful to have had the opportunity to groom such a great man and to have been trusted by him as a friend. RIP Luther...

I was in my teens in the 1980's. I had only been exposed to country music. I don't even know how but I stumbled into listening to soul music and thus I heard Luther Vandross. He is, in my opinion the greatest voice of my lifetime. I absolutely love his voice and the way he sings. I was lucky enough to see him in concert and I was blown away. It's 2023 and I STILL love Luther. I miss him singing. There will never be another like him.

What has become painful about this song is I was a young boy when it was out; when he was most popular. My Mother would listen to him. All of my aunts and their friends. I remember back in 1984, I saw Luther perform, I bought the ticket from a Chicago broker whose seats were not beyond the third row. Me and my friends had a ball. I think that was the best concert, I ever attended.

I had the pleasure of being part of the opening act for this incredibly talented & wonderful human being on the NY Spirit Cruises in the early 90's. To this date in time, he remains, so alive & full of life in my heart & soul! Such a man's man with a voice that transcends time and stands alone beyond peers, coupled with a persona that is so genuine, so great as to aspire so many professionally! There are very few who can stand near little less close to the reality of Luther but "we" must reach for the essence despite the hurdle being so high! What an honor and a privilege to be there. He was one of my favorite love ballads singers in the 80's. I had three beautiful babies listening to Luther Vandross. One daughter and two sons who are grown folks today giving me grandchildren. We can never get tired of listening to our favorite musicians. He's legend who we love and appreciate. 🌸🌸🌹🌸🌸

I was there too and to this day I can feel every note of every song reverb thru my heart and soul , I miss this man so much , his songs taught me how to love a woman! Thank you Luther, you will always be my brother from another mother and a friend in soul and spirit , may you rest in peace and thank you for the joy your voice gave me and all your millions of fans!
