The baby Luxman was more transparent than expected with fine imaging an admirable balance across the frequency bands. The air between the instruments and around the vocals was smile inducing not to mention unexpected in most amps at this price point. Incisive yet never seemed to editorialize or add unwanted coloration to an already impeccable tonal nature. As for the Denon, well it does look good and praiseworthiness runs thin from there on in. Proving the point yet again with higher end audio equipment, once you get a taste , as with the Luxman 505 , for audiophile grade audio, there is no going back.

Luxman more natural ,relaxed and controlled. Vocal comes from the right place. With Denon the resolution is lower, bass is worse. And vocal comes from unnaturally far back and of course it is too bright.

The Luxman is definitely fuller in the mids, and has better low end presence. The Denon sounds a little thinner around the mids, allowing the nice, airy treble to be heard a little better. I tend to like that kinda smile shaped sound. However, I found myself preferring the sound of the luxman. It was richer, and more even sounding.

The Winner for me is the Luxman

i have ordered a Luxman L 505 uXII now , and i feel like a child on christmas eve ..i am WAITING !!

I owned the PMA 2000 IVR for many years and was happy with it but my tastes might slightly prefer the Luxman now which just sounds more transparent to me than the PMA 2000. Although the Denon has a nice organic touch that the Luxman doesn't seem to have. Now it would be interesting to hear the Luxman against the new Denon A110. I get its a lot closer and a better comparo really.

Over in ear monitors it soulds like Luxman has more "meat on the bone" and smoother highs.

As a huge Sade fan, I had to listen to this a couple of times. "Kiss of Life" is sacred ground for me. I found myself critiquing Ms. Mahya's cover of Sade's classic, rather than listening critically, albeit limited as we all are by our own PC speaker set-ups. The Denon sounded brighter and wider, and seemed to push instrumentation at the expense of the vocals. The inevitable consequence of that for me is ear fatigue. I might listen to the Denon for a ditty or two, but if I'm truly looking to wind down and/or escape, I'd pick the Luxman. Having said that, given the price and class of the Luxman, I felt like it needed to really blow me away....but it didn't.

Listening with Audeze LCD-X headphones with RM ADI-2 DAC. First immediately noticed - it hears like with Denon she doesn't even go with the rythm of the music, like she lags a bit behind it. Luxman absolutely wins dynamics, bass presentation and control, I bet the soundstage is much deeper (and probably a bit wider). Even if it might looks like Denon is more alive, Luxman is fuller and natural sounding. Denon is much brighter on highs. But Luxman is not less detailed! Its surely a matter of taste - but with those B&Ws it could be fatiguing (it probably is). Denon is less clear in mids also - instruments separation is much better on Luxman.. So its like 4:1 in favor of Luxman (with 1 for Denon's "liveliness"), which kind of reflects the units price ratio.

They both sound good to my ear and I could probably enjoy either of them too. Thx for the comparison!

It’s hard to be objective considering the path of the music from your speakers and ending in my earphones. However I can tell you what I heard and the differences that were apparent to my ears. The first thing I noted was the more apparent and tighter bass from the Luxman. Secondly the Denon sounded much brighter in the upper mid and lower high frequencies. I preferred the warmer sound from the Luxman. For example the piano and strings sounded overly bright on the Denon; compared with the sweeter yet well defined sound from the Luxman simulating the same instruments. I preferred the vocal on the Luxman too. To my ears the Luxman had better definition, yet a warmer sound, from the lowest bass through to the highest frequencies that I could hear. I would love to hear them directly. As it is I have tried to give an honest opinion of the sounds I could hear. I would love to hear some classical or baroque music on this system. JS Bach’s famous Toccata and Fugue in D Minor (BWV 565) by Simon Preston on Deutsche Grammophon 1989 would give the system a good test, especially if you like the lower organ registers!

now I know why most of luxman amplifier are little bit expensive. but for the practicality I would go for denon.

The Denon has the edge, not by a lot. I hear some artifacts that could be power or cable related. Very good comparison overall, I think both represent well for this price range and type of amps. Thanks for the work on this for us.

To me the Luxman is warm while the Denon is clear. I feel emotion with the Luxman only, everything sounds real and balanced (the Denon seems to lack bass).

Clearly luxman win.. but I think there are some other choices that worth to try out.. classe ca d200, accu e370, roksan blak, densen beat 130+ & ragnarok with dac module..

Luxman here. Much tighter bass, more controlled in general. But again, listening in person can be different.

The Luxman sounds better in every single aspects to me. Not even slightly challenged by the Denon that almost sounds faulty next to the Luxman. The Denon sounds completely lifeless. Listening on my office 2.1 system, NuPrime stack with Monitor Audio and a SVS sub.

There was absolutely something going on with a patch cord or input on the Denon maybe loose ground bad solder joint something that seemed to come and go maybe fixed itself as it warmed up to bad because if that was to no of been occuring i would of put my money on the Denon all day the inside pf these amps are simply delicious looking and there ratings are completely utterly and vastly underrated! Denon for the W!! #1

A lot of comments Here favor the luxman, I can't blame them it's a beautiful and it sound wonderful amplifier. But I went for the denon. I pared the denon with tannoy d700, and to control the high, I got a dac with a tube output. Oh man, what a pair. A friend of mine have a high-end mcintosh set up. He is surprised how good the denon.

The Denon sounds better through my computer. Moore musical. The Luxman sounds brighter, maybee moore analytic. To really deside which one sounds better you probebly have to be there and live with theme for a while.

Both amplifiers sound good. the denon 2000 is a lot older than the luxman (and little difference) the denon pma 2500ne is a lot better with new Schottky barrier diodes and built-in dac. unfortunately the denon pma 2500 ne is not available in the US. Only japan and europe. What is the reason for that? price quality very attractive the 2500ne compared to the luxman. it won't be much apart other good alternative price / quality: atoll in300 yahama s2100

Amplifiers like other electronic components need to be turned on and allowed to stabilize. Transistors will behave differently at different temperatures.

Luxman is better match here with this B&W. Denon sounds more relaxed and liquid but needs some little more explicit speakers to fully shine. That's it.

Do you use shielded power cable? Sound is a bit strangled. Try and use unshielded right from the wall.

Apart from the volume not being matched, these two amps sound exactly the same. As they should.

Prefer the denon for some reason

The first thing that I noticed listening to these demos is that the luxman appears to have excessive bass, with it sounding unnaturally boosted. The Denon sounded much more natural and easy to my ears. However, the mids and midbass with the Denon sounded relatively anemic leading to the top end sounding brighter. Personally, I would go with the luxman if it has tone controls or eq to reduce the bass.

I found that none of the amps are shining in this setup. It seems fatiguing. I mentioned this before too and I say it again, your room sounds very echoey and needs to be further damped down!! Anyway all these aspects kept aside, the Denon sounds flatter in all respects. I dint enjoy that presentation at all. Luxman on the other hand, sounded fuller. You should not settle on this Luxman and keep your hunt on!! All the best bud!!

Is there anybody who will tell something good about Denon? IMHO Denon didn't lose his path here. Very detailed sound with great midtones and accurate bass guitar partitions in the beginning. Luxman maybe a bit better, but Denon is also great. Price difference is obvious in the sound department, but I will choose Denon always before Luxman. Some warm loudspeakers will be better choice for Denon instead of this BW. The only sad thing is that this Denon cannot be found in my country. Or the new ones.

I don't know any PowerAmp what sounds good started cold, even my Hypex UCD700 ( Class D ) wants a warm - up and so my PreAmp Vincent SA-32 of at least 30. Min. Was both Amps playing at same Volume ? In my opinion the Luxman is more dynamic in the bass and more consistent. However, it seemed to me that Denon is more musical and richer in the middle range and open and airy tops. But I would like to know the opinion of the channel based on listening to what it says about the two amplifiers. Hearing on youtube is different from listening on site. greetings from Portugal

All of your shouting for Luxman be aware that if an IC board brakes you can junk it, since you won't find parts for it, while the Denon can be repaired and had for 30 years or more.

so its not that BW is bright by nature.. much of it could be due to the amp! it sounds like two different speakers! I can feel luxman is more dynamic and exerts more control in the drum strength. But the highs of the piano from the denon is beautiful too.

15 years and 1000 euros separate its two devices...Denon is a great competitor for is age. If youy want compare sound tuning do it with the 2500NE, same generation of sound tuning and same range of price

To make a fair opinion, you need to own both and test them with several kinds of music. But just hearing from here, with all the limitations... I enjoy more the highs of the Denon.

Luxman is obviously better in resolution and lower distortion. Neither is particularly to my tastes. Prefer a smoother and fuller presentation. Can't see Lux being a good match to B&W diamond series. A lot of people match with Harbeth speakers which are pretty much the opposite presentation. May be nicer with Lintons at reasonable price or the new Wharfedale Evo series.

The PMA-2000IV-R is old model. You must compare this Luxman with the new models from Denon, the PMA 2020ae or PMA 2500ne. Luxman is over priced. Yamaha a s2100 is also very good choice.

To me luxman better than denon by quite a large margin. The overall sound more substantial & plays lower. The denon has a midrange glare that i personally don’t like. That plus a lack of body to the sound will lead to fatigue very quickly. The luxman also sound more polished & alot quieter overall.

I find both setups too bright or your room needs more treatment. This would tire my ears over time. Also not a fan of B&W or metal drivers. Both amps do seem of high quality though.
