This is misleading. The Dior book tote is a cloth bag so of course it costs nothing to make. This is not every bag. Also the $57 dollars is for labor not materials, not advertisement, and not design.

Very disappointing. I came across a comment a few years ago that skilled Chinese artisans, often trained by the fashion houses themselves, are choosing to work in replica factories because the working conditions and wages are so much better making fakes than when they were making authentic bags. Not sure how true it is but it can certainly explain why fakes are so good now. Either way this is certainly not luxury and a huge mark on Dior's brand image.

The fact is that most if not all the factories in Italy have been sold to the chinese. I have even watched a video of som very rich chinese women , one owned a factory in china and she admitted that designer clothes were made in her factrory. The thing is that the luxury houses can say made in france or italy when the piece is not . They can make it in china then ship it back and add the lable and say made in china. This is not a secret but some just ignore the facts. If they will over charge the buyer for their bags , why would they care about the people making them. .Loro piano was also called out for not paying the people who do the labor for her cashmere.
@sparklefarter
@sparklefarter 11 күн бұрын
That's correct. The last substantial transformation just needs to be done in the country of origin you want the label printed to say so really, most of the time it's silly of us to request specifically, like in LV items, we want "made in France" pieces. :) Dior isn't even the first to have labour issues. Fendi and LV was on the radar before for having workers make garments from their home for basically pennies and without contracts. This was just in 2018. This is not the first nor the last and has been happening for decades, not just luxury but, all over the world. Although, It's been a problem within Italy for years. We hold luxury brands higher for the price that we pay but, who are we kidding. Everyone is out for the higher profit margins and for the higher positions to pocket the most. Humans ultimately are just very greedy and selfish. I think we all need a grasp on reality however, I do hope from this situation blowing up that we scrutinize this a bit more and pressure these companies to do better. I believe this will be a good lesson for all. 😅
@LuxPurselove
@LuxPurselove 11 күн бұрын
I have no problem if the factory is owned by Chinese or if the workers are Chinese but it is the cruelty of how they were treated. I wasn't aware of Loro P (never heard of it till quiet luxury) or the Fendi or LV issues. It does come down to greed and self selfishness for sure. Hopefully we can all be more aware now.

What a crazy story. 24 hours a day, why. Are they selling that many bags to justify 24/7 labour. Clearly someone in corporate procurement LVMH did not vet these factories or chose to ignore the conditions. Markup on product is normal business, but this type of markup on bags that are not really luxury after all is high way robbery.

A LVMH Italian subsidiary owned the factory that organised the sub-contract, therefore, LVMH should have checked conditions of who it was contracted out to. All fall under the same umbrella. The reality being they don’t care. LVMH just swallow up Companies, put logos on everything, often replace quality materials for cheaper versions and pretty much ruin everything they get their sticky little fingers on. No point selling what you have, enjoy them… someone may have worked an eighteen hour shift to make them. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I do think that the Italian government needs to take some responsibility in this instance too. As someone who’s culture background is Chinese, I’m truly sad that made in China = exploitation and less than ideal craftsmanship. Clearly the workers work hard and there’s a market for what they produce (probably not at current price). I just hope through labor renegotiation, their working conditions can get better. Also I hope one day they can work for Chinese designers too, so the brand image will align better with the workers in the back stage

This is irrelevant. LVMH is headed by the wealthiest family in the world, and answers to shareholders, not customers. Prior to these abuses, they were abusing French & Italian workers paid minimum wages for high level craftsman ship. Would you work for 20 euros an hour to work a 40 hour week on bags that sell for $10,000? Even the LV workshop in Paris pays poorly.

All northern Italy is filled with factories of all sorts of brands that have MADE IN ITALY tags on their products. But do not be fooled, they employ cheap Chinese labor not Italian craftsmen. Remember how Covid started in Northern Italy right after Chinese new year of 2020 after all workers returned to Italy from their holidays in China. I was in Italy then and remember that we had 2000 plus deaths daily. No wonder why if they work and live in unsanitary crowded facilities.

There was an undercover video of the workers that have had their limbs literally cut off because of the lack of safety precautions being removed. They were forced to work for basically free after being promised a job and they had to sleep in the parking lot as well as their visas were taken away by the owners of the factory. Don’t know if those videos are still available on KZfaq but I saw 3 of them . 💯 in one of those videos they admitted that the designer’s inspector tells the factory owners when they are coming ahead of time! And that’s only once per year 😮.

“The owners of the contracting and subcontracting companies are under investigation by Milan prosecutors for exploiting workers and employing people off the books, while Dior itself faces no criminal probe. “ Whilst it is not Dior facing legal consequences I will be interested to hear what processes they intend to put in place to monitor their sub-contractor’s working conditions. I hope some good will come out of this. Somebody else made a comment about if they don’t like it, work somewhere else. Whilst I don’t agree with this, it does raise an important point. Why would you work there? There is no mention of workers being underpaid. Let’s hope they at least may have been earning fairly decent money and that was the incentive.

That person made several rude statements about the workers until I had to block her. It isn't always that easy to change jobs especially when stuck in a situation like this one and some of the workers were there illegally which makes it even harder. I too hope some good comes out of this.

No you are wrong about that CD was not acquired in 2017. It was initially acquired as a construction company under whose umbrella sat the Christian Dior company. This was Bernard Arnault first foray into luxury brand. Originally the main family business was in construction. I am not sure which decade this new company was acquired but it was decades ago. Later he started buying Lious Vuitton and then other brands such as Bulgari Moët Chandon. His latest acquisition is Tiffany. Since then Tiffany prices have shot up!! I remember reading all about it and how Bernard Arnault LVMH owner got into luxury brands purely by chance.

I read the book Counterfeit, a fictional book, about super fakes and spoke of the working conditions in China. Horrible and that is one of the arguments used against purchasing counterfeit bags. It is appalling to find out similar conditions allegedly may be occurring in luxury brand production as well. I was in Las Vegas last week, and walked into Dior, to look at your rafia Lady Dior as well as a leather bag Lady Dior, not knowing about this expose. I'm happy I didn't purchase either bag. The store only had one other shopper in it, and most of the stores were empty at Wynn, Encore, Crystals and Bellagio. The insane price increases have caused a lot of shoppers to look elsewhere and this may be another nail in the coffin of luxury unless the brands are more transparent about working conditions.

Actually, it’s a little more complicated- Bernard Arnault bought Dior in 1984, even before founding LVMH. In 2017 his own holding company Groupe Arnault sold it to LVMH, so essentially same owner.

I'm very curious if there is anything the industry would do to increase trust. It is absolutely not enough to just slip away from responsibility by having third party contract. They need to have some Blockchain tech solutions where we could see proof of payment to the worker and health insurance.
