Damn I remember watching this and the 1st thing I said was "He look like he just got out of jail" and he really did. What was unique about he winning at the Apollo was the first three times he won he sung cry. The next three times he sung Made up my mind, and for his 7th and final victory before he retired he sung Gold. Till this day I'm looking for that song, it's the song that play when this video 1st comes on

Yeah, but this was one of the first songs he wrote. I wish I could watch all 7 of his amateur performances on Showtime at the Apollo. He was the only person I ever seen change songs every other time he won. He sung Cry, another song off his first album and Gold the day he retired

I remember being in prison and waiting up til 2am to watch Showtime at the Apollo. One nite this dude lyfe came on and had 4 prisoner's damn near in tears. The next 2 weeks he had equally moving performances.

I heard this when it was in the show in a rebroadcast on the Armed Forces network in March 2003, while I was in Japan. Absolutely amazing. I still talk about this sing and audition 10 years later.

Never knew this is how he started. This is dope! I love Lyfe. When my husband was locked up he used to dedicate all his songs to me & sing them to me. So lyfes songs has carried me thru alot of tough times. Apollo discovered all the real talent! I used to live around the corner from there when i lived in ny, but never saw anyone famous..lol

I remembering hearing this song back then on his album that I bought and this is one of them songs that resignates to me. That one and "she got kids" i didn't know he got discovered at the Apollo. Wow. What a beautiful soul what a beautiful voice. He's a troubled man but he got a great heart. We all are the product of our environment.
