These clips were recorded by my neighbour in Burwood East (a Greek guy called John) in the late eighties in both Pelham and Bouverie Streets in Carlton. Please excuse the poor picture quality, poor recording technique and poor editing! The technology was in its infancy, and I simply made myself a copy at the time by putting two VCR machines together. Great memories of a bygone era!

You’ve certainly made myself and many others filled with emotion with this footage. It’s absolute gold and should be preserved. The commentary is also hilarious. What cars we had back then! wtf are you guys on about? this has never been ok. you see them film for so long without cops getting involved is because we didn't have many cops back in the day. not to mention, there's hardly anyone around to call for the police. and as for the "good ole'" days, you could get in trouble for flaunting too much skin which is why you see them sheilas dressed moderately.

@@johnbravo7542 how is no mobile phones a good thing? also, people do speak to each other. maybe nobody is interested in talking to you since you always bring up the 'good ol' days'? and have nothing else to talk about. you old farts reap the benefits of technology but never appreciate it, rather bash the younger generation all the time.

people today are free, they have much more fun than you guys did, chapel and lygon are not empty now like they were, they're beautiful with some of of the best restaurants serving great food and shops where you can buy some nice clothes. everybody likes the time they grew up in ad kids and thinks they had it best it's just a psychological thing.

I understand man. thanks for your comment. Yes i really see the connecttion between the america cars and old assie cars. what a shame. Well not only Australia is fucked up. Spain (where i'm from) is fucked up too. i think technologies and social engineering is making this world worse than it was already. I get your point but i think it would be healthier to have your opinion and not try to prove it right or wrong Just for my own health i gave up doing that. i have my opinions and don't pretend everyone to agree. Thanks for commenting man!

Chrome bumpers disappeared in 1979 when the XD Falcon came out. Mitsubishi ditched them from the Sigma in 1980 as well. However, chrome bumpers remained on Japanese utes up until the 1990s. In fact, in the USA, pickups are still sold with them.

Bennet St Dandenong was the place around 79-80 I worked at Nicks Service Centre as an apprentice mechanic for a while, it was the most popular speed shop in Melb, Sat morning was wall to wall customers. Sunday I worked solo at Nicks Wrecking Yard in Sth Gip Hwy which is where we stripped all the cars Nick imported. Later Nick sold up and the Speed Shop moved to the wrecking yard and became Eagle Auto.

Almost everyone put PJ gears to make the car sound like it had a supercharger on, lol, those were the days, also remember the BLACK HZ GTS with white leather and massive 16 " rims with bridgestone tyres lol:) ?

dang dang well i was around and i don't think you missed much. Cunts were still cunts much as they are today and all the cars in this vid which are worth all these $$$$$s now were just cars. Some were better than others but mostly they were painfully boring which is why you had to modify them. If they weren't boring then they were new cars and we couldn't afford them. This is why the car hobby is becoming gentrified - everyone who couldn't afford a fast car then and can now, wants one.

i was born in thr 50's so I had matured a bit by the 80's . But we were doing the same stuff in the 60's and early 70's . Even got on TV thanks to a police campaign to stop street racing... ha ha

This is undoubtedly a piece of LONG forgotten Australian history. I don't care if the do gooder "soy boys" like this or not. I was 20 in 1980, and it was a time of no bullshit, police that we respected and understood that this was a bit of fun. This video should be played on prime time TV. Thanks for taking me back to a great time in my life.

enjoy it, why not. Most aren't that old when filmed. a commodore was 40k brand new accounting for inflation. hold on 30 years and its worth 10k less.... Any of those guys who bought a house back then would be laughing.

HAHA I used to go there in my Blue XA 351 Cleveland replica GT. I will never forget the time the Cops got me into the old D24 for doing burnouts after they were secretly filming in the building right next to the burnout pad. Luckily they could not find me on the video so they let me go.
