I'm closing in on 80 and just recently heard this song. It hit me to the core. Brought tears to my eyes. Life is that way. The closer you get to the end the more you realize it is the memories that keep you going. I have a small box of momentos that I look at from time to time. They are from my military career, my youth, and other times in my life. I listen to this song at least once a day. As Jimmy Bufffet said about life "some of it's tragic, some of it's magic but it's been a good life all the way."

They were specially talented people....long before their time .......Guy, Townes, Jerry Jeff, Blaze, Steve Earle, Rodney and Willie.....Texas music was the epitome of originality.

And that is the "short" list. Robert Earl, Jimmie Dale, Butch Hancock, Blaze, Joe Ely, Calvin Russell, Willis Allen Ramsey, Marcia Ball, Doug Sahm, Billy Joe Shaver, so many more. There is something in the Texas water that no other state can even come close to. I am so glad I left that shithole, NY to move to Austin in 1980.

Just saw Lyle with the Large Band with Mavis Staples @ the Wolf Trap in Virginia. I've seen Lyle 5 times now. What stands out above all with Lyle is he is a true gentleman. His pastor was there that night and he spent a time talking about him and his wife and how much they had done for him and their dedication to training chaplains for the military. Lyles one of the good guys and someone I would be proud to know. He also has one hell of a sense of humor and is a wicked good story teller.

When I hear singer/songwriters like Guy Clark and Lyle Lovett, it's clear that some people are ordained at birth to be the writers of songs and the interpreters of songs. Masterful song and masterful performance.

I met LL after a show many years ago, right after this album came out. There were a number of us who waited outside the back door of the theater to meet him. As we crowded around him to get autographs and a minute or two of conversation, he took as much time with each person as he or she wanted. When it came my turn, I couldn't help but feel that he treated me like I was the only person there. He didn't just sign and nod. He didn't just give me a canned response. He listened to me and conversed with me. I also always cut musicians slack when meeting them. They just got off work. They are tired, and I never take offense to what they say or how they act. Most are very nice. Some aloof. I'm just glad to be there. But I have yet to meet anyone who could make every person in line feel as though he truly appreciated the fact that they were there, as though he wanted to talk to them, like Lyle did. The man exudes coolness and grace and I will always consider my two minutes with him as a very special moment in my life.

When I stumbled upon the "Step Inside This House" album I didn't know about any of the TX writers and it completely changed everything I thought I knew about music. Guy Clark, Lyle Lovett, Townes Van Zandt, Rodney Crowell and Steve Earle, they are all amazing! and there are many, many more of them out there!

Yeah wow I’ve always admired Lyle Lovett and I got to see him once a few years ago here in Cleveland with his large band is simply one of the best shows I ever saw. I’ve only had those kind of feelings in this song a few times in my life and by damn I wish I hadn’t lost them. I don’t believe we are meant to be alone on this planet and no matter how hard we try we screw it up we can screw it up huge For whatever reason we end up alone. I’d like to have these feelings again to ask some some girl to step inside again and share my life as hard as that may be thank you I love it for this moment. 💔💕 For many of us love is all we need damn it’s hard to get

I have this CD. He was in Pennsylvania and did a meet and greet sponsored by WXPN at a Borders bookstore..And afterwords we waited in line until 1 AM and he signed part of the insert for me. And he was so tired. And I told him 'you are so tired -- please get some sleep. You would really feel good with more sleep." And he smiled and said 'thank you ma'am. That's the best suggestion I've had all night.' Nice memories of Lyle,

That picture hangin' on the wall Was painted by a friend He gave it to me all down and out When he owed me ten Now it doesn't look like much I guess But it's all that's left of him And it sure is nice from right over here When the light's a little dim Step inside my house Babe I'll sing for you a song I'll tell you 'bout where I've been It shouldn't take too long I'll show you all the things I own My treasures you might say Couldn't be more'n ten dollars worth But they brighten up my day Here's a book of poems I got From a girl I used to know I guess I read it front to back Fifty times or so It's all about the good life And stayin' at ease with the world It's funny how I love that book And I never loved that girl Hold this piece of glass Up to the light comin' through the door It's a prism glass I found on the road Can you see that little rainbow Well it's not really a prism I guess It just broke in a funny way I found it on my way from Texas Headed for L.A. This guitar was given me By old man Thomas Gray It's not too much to look at But I pick it every day It's been across the country Four or five times I guess Between me and old man Tom It never got much rest Well that's about all I own And all I care to I guess Except this pair of boots And that funny yellow vest And that leather jacket and leather bag And hat hangin' on the wall Just so it's not too much to carry Could I see you again next Fall

Lyle paints such a wonderful picture when he sings. Like Dan Fogelberg among others that sing a short story for us.
