Lyle was a great composer and incredible musician. He is is sadly missed. I think he never got all the recognition that he deserved. It would be great if his friends and colleagues made a tribute album in his honor.

I always felt that Lyle may's keyboard arrangements were what made the PM Group special.

same here. Pat is amazing on his own. But with Lyle everything was magical. I feel the same for Radiohead and Jonny Greenwood. or Sam Prekop with Sea & Cake.

Lyle didn’t get enough credit for his work in PMG. He was the soul and genius of the group, in my opinion.

I have a Masters in Jazz studies from Indiana University. But as a pianist it would take me several lifetimes to be able to play like Lyle Mays. He is my favorite jazz pianist and I am grateful he shared his great talent with the world. Seeing the PMG in 1986 is the greatest concert I have ever been to.

I had the good fortune to see them in '89 at Wolftrap (an incredible "outdoor" venue, in the DC area). It was the, Letter From Home, tour.. Have been to many incredible concerts over the years.. That was still (and will probably always be) THE best.. 🎶😌🎶.. We all miss Lyle Mays sooo much.. More than we can say... Thank you for this Rick.. ❣️

I would travel anywhere PMG was gigging in those early days. Small clubs where one could sit on the edge of the stage and lean on Lyle's monitors. They were such dedicated musicians and such great people.

Love this story! Thank you Rick. Saw this vid a while ago but missed the opening; didn't realize it was the day after he died. 😢In a few months he will have been gone 4 years already and many of us still feel the loss deeply. I've only scratched the surface listening to, digesting, and understanding his contributions. A day or two after he passed I received a nice email reply from Audrey; we said "At least he left us with an amazing body of work to enjoy." Indeed. Really, there aren't enough words... We can only say: Thank you Lyle... for everything. 🙏

My first real impression of Lyle was on Watercolors. The song "River Quay" knocked me out. The melody, the guitar, keyboard interplay, just fell in love with the song the group and the musicianship.and have loved them ever since.

It’s lovely to hear anecdotes of one’s musical heroes in the non-musical part of their lives. Lyle in particular was a polymath. We’re just fortunate he shared his music part.

Lyle didn't stop playing because he had nothing left to say, I'd bet he was just being gracious. He did love to program but I'm pretty sure he didn't code for Korg, but I could be wrong. He did code a music conmposition algorithm that he used/demonstarated with a small group at TedX at CalTechh (on KZfaq) including Bob Rice his KB tech on guitar. I knew Lyle of course by the PMG but we were good friends from a shared love of model railroading and LEGO building/designing. I miss him terribly. Wichita wsa my fav! Falcon sound track my 2nd fav.

I miss Lyle Mays and Jeff Beck Both my parents were accomplished musicians unfortunately I never followed in their footsteps to my parents dismay. The Story behind this I had the gift of music from birth and love jazz with a passion... Looking back at my life now this is my biggest regret. But when I listen to the likes of Jeff Lyle and Pat it takes me to a place that I'm at peace with what could have been.....❤️🙏🌹

The Group toured as a quartet in 2009/2010. I think it started on request by Blue Note Japan where they were offered a residency in 2009 and then they took the opportunity to play the 2010 summer festivals in Europe. I saw them at North Sea Jazz. Only time I saw Lyle play. It was great, they had Proof in the setlist and he went full ballistic there (as he always does). He did a few things after that including a demo for Spectrasonics (with Alex Acuña) and this performance at a TED event. It was my assumption after his passing that he was diagnosed with something already around that time and that it informed his decision to basically quit the music industry, especially as Pat has continued to write all kinds of things and he has continued to play these group songs (I even saw him perform songs like Third Wind and Slip Away in 2018). I've been curious to know how much he and Pat remained in good contact and considered writing something. Both Pat and him did recent tributes to Eberhard Weber. It struck me as kinda odd that they didn't join forces together.

Do you consider make a video about Lyle's legacy in good production and all great resources you have? Maybe inviting Aubrey Johnson, his nephew? We would love. Compositional material, history, particularities, voicings, style, etc.. some ideias.
