I bought a Lyman Turbo Sonic Ultrasound Cleaner from eBay which was sold as an "Untested Customer Return" and we all know what that means!
Let's see if we can figure out the problem, and hopefully repair it!
Link to the replacement heater I used (UK).

Love these shows with British folk. I could listen to them talk all day. They say funny things. Like they say "solder", "solder". In the US we say "soder". Oh wait! Are they right and we wrong? I think so!😂

Yeah was thinking similar as there's no thermal cut out and the temperature sensor is on the other side of the tank.

Great vid.. I have same one (but Harbor Freight branded) with a broken heater. It works great minus the broken element. After seeing the temp with it working, think I'll just continue to pour in hot water and my cleaner when I have an item to clean... your video was very helpful.

@@BuyitFixit I shouldn't think the gasket compound you used helped either: it would be thermally insulating is my expectation. Some thermally-conductive compound such as used for CPU+HS glues would have been a much better solution IMO

Living on the edge, now we know why if you ever just stop posting videos. Would it be possible to put isopropyl alcohol in the cleaner, thinking you would be able to place electronics in there with no worries. But a fun little video, nice and easy fix. Keep up the good work and looking forward to seeing more

Hi, Wouldn't it be better to use a thermally conductive adhesive? Or perhaps thermal compound between the heater and bowl and then your silicone sealant around the edges to hold it on? I suppose for belt and braces a resettable thermal fuse inline wouldn't go amiss. I'd've expected the relay controlling the heater to have blown with that faulty switch. Is this cleaner to be resold or for your own use?
@BuyitFixit
@BuyitFixit Жыл бұрын
I had thought about using some thermal paste as wasn't sure how well the silicone would transfer the heat, but they just seemed to have used the silicone and the site I got the heater from sold similar to adhere the heater. Think the relay will be ok as it's just a 100w resistive load. Agree with some kind of thermal fuse. No, just for personal use as I didn't have one and thought it might come in useful 🙂

@@BuyitFixit The part about your repairs and Vinces repairs is the fact that you both purchase spares and record the videos with that ultimate satisfaction of seeing the project done. I would still watch a series (like the Rolls too) but that long-format, take-it-to-completion style is really suited to my viewing habits. It's also the same with @menditmark.

Yes I don't usually try and drag stuff out over multiple videos, unless it's a failure video like the Dyson hot and cold fan, and then unexpectedly I get a message from a guy in Australia offering to send me his faulty non exploded board, which I had a chance of repairing, or as in this case where it was getting to be a bit of a long video, and a bit bigger project. I normally try to keep my stuff to around 30 minutes or so..

I bought last year from Aliexpress something called an AIPIO, £20 inc shipping, its a dinky little thing but all stainless steel and a very potent ultrasonic action for its size. As I mainly deal with watch parts very useful size and it does lack a heater but has a degas function which is something useful for drying small metal parts and I just use hot water from the tap and put my parts into isopropyl alcohol or naptha (brilliant cleaner, buy it in large quantities as fast panel wipe which is the strongest naptha) in a little screw down glass jar and boy it gets stuff super clean.

That heater is not going to heat very effectively being isolated from the tank with silicone. I would have put some thermal paste on the center and only done the outlines with silicone to attach it instead.
@BuyitFixit
@BuyitFixit 10 ай бұрын
The original one was attached with silicone too. I did think similar, so I only used a very thin coat on the heater element and the majority was around the outside. As you say thermal paste might have been a better option. It might be why the original heater failed..

Ok, I have to admit. When I watch your channel, I look for the items you are fixing on (the big auction site) and everything I find there is selling for quite a bit of money, not including the outrageous shipping costs. You "must" have a secret in finding this stuff for cheap so you can repair it. Granted they are cheaper than something new, but still are expensive for something broken. 😁 what's your secret?
@BuyitFixit
@BuyitFixit 6 ай бұрын
Thanks 👍unfortunately I don't think there is a secret. I normally have about 20 Ebay tabs open with different searches which I refresh every day. Sometimes I find an interesting item, sometimes not. Try things like 'faulty' or 'broken' or 'please read', 'no power' in different categories you're interested in. I've often seen things sell for not much cheaper than a working item too! Crazy!
