Local geographer and geologist James Thomas takes us on a fascinating tour of Lyme Regis' sea defences both old and new which protect and give this sea side town much of it's popular charm.

Excellent! Many years ago my husband and I “discovered” Lyme. It was the summer after the film The French Lieutenant’s Woman was filmed in Lyme (1981?) We had walked from Charmouth along the beach to find the town still dressed as for the filming. It was like stepping back in time and we both fell in love with the place and the friendly people. During the next 30 years we kept driving down to Lyme and staying in all sorts of accommodation, hotels and b&bs latterly self catering staying in an old dairy attached to an old barn now a farm house. We were very happy there, and returned a few times until my husband was too ill to travel. We watched the surveys being done when the plans for the new Marine Parade were published, and each year more work had been done on the improvements. Finally we were there when the beaches were finally opened and were amongst the first people to walk on the new gravel beach. Thank you for showing the new works on the east end of beach and reminding me of many lovely holidays spent in Lyme.

Brian. Thanks to you for bringing back many happy memories from my visits in the late 60's and early 70's when i was in my 20's. I was visiting when the film 'The french luitenants woman was being filmed. Remember going to a local pub for lunch and hearing a couple of postmen complaining that a number of thier routes were closed of for filming on those days. I also remember walking through the mini crazy golf course, catching the edgeing of the green and spraining my ankle. in later years returning with my wife and children and also on later dates my grandchildren. now at the age of 77 and feeling my age I do not travel as much, but revisit through your videos, so once again, many thanks and keep on making memories for many people like myself.

What a great summary of Lyme’s coastal protection. Some great photos in there too. A reminder for me of some hard work, good old machines and some great work mates.

Fantastic video and the history of sea defences. Thank you James. Incredible how much money and work has been invested in Lyme Regis to stop it from being washed away.

Lovely, informative film, thank you. Having spent time on holiday around the area with my late wife and our daughter when she was very young, the mere mention of the beautiful Dorset Jurassic coast brings a flutter to my heart. I now live in North Devon but am disabled so a lot of this stunning countryside and coast is out of my reach now. Thank you for sharing.

I used to visit a lot as a child in the 1990s. This was an amazing insight into the place. I have to admit at the time, I had no idea at the time it had such historic and geological significance. I just used to think it was a cool place to go for the beach! Brilliant video-thanks so much!

Nice resort town for a holiday visit, though I wouldn't want to live next to the sea like this. How long do concrete walls last, in the face of gale force wind and angry waves from the Atlantic?
