Hola, gracias por todas esas imágenes tan bellas. Un día tuve la oportunidad de ver por internet como una Osa Negra llamada Lily paria a su bebé, en su cueva. nunca imaginé que podría ver algo tan bonito. desde entonces le sigo. Muchas Gracias Doctor Lyn Rogers.

Proper tree measurement is, as he said, 4.5 feet above the ground. But it is to get the tree's diameter. Not girth or circimference. This tree's diameter breaks down to 3.6 feet or c. 42".

Bob Leverett is co-author of the American Forests national champion tree measuring rules. The standard for determining champion trees is to measure circumference (not diameter) at 4.5 feet above ground; tree height and average crown spread, along with the circumference, are used to determine champion status. Circumference is more meaningful than diameter because tree trunks are not always cylindrical, so diameter at any given height varies depending on the shape of the trunk; it's easier to wrap a tape around the trunk and get circumference than it is to measure diameters.

@@NewEnglandForests Thank you for the reply. The difference between us is that my work is professional. Yours is... what would you call it? Organizational? Sort of like the Boon and Crockett standards for deer are not necessarily what a western deer hunter might use? Anyway thank you. I have been enjoying your eastern forest videos recently. For anyone who would like to know how American forestry got started and organized, I wish to suggest the autobiography of Gifford Pinchot, America's first forester. He was also governor of Pennsylvania twice. The title is, "Breaking New Ground". You will find it online and at old book shops.

Hi Michael. Ok, thanks, my misunderstanding. I'd say you could put the measurements in the "sport" category; they're the American Forests standard used to determine national (and many state) champion trees.
