Recorded live in Osaka, Japan on 1/18/77. Steve Gaines on vocals of course, and he does a nice job. Notice that the Honkettes sing backup, which they would not do on the Street Survivors recording.

Politely disagree, pretty much everyone knows he was the best guitarist and if God hadn't taken him from us he could easily became top 10 artist in the rock music history.

Steve Gaines was a very special talent, both as a guitarist and vocalist, sadly taken away from us much too soon. He could have become a giant of blues and rock music, on a par with the likes of SRV, but because of his all too brief tenure with the band, his legend is only known to a few of us old-time Skynryd devotees, who really appreciate the genius of Steve's work. RIP Steve and thank-you for the great music.

All it takes is a little research and listening to the songs he wrote and the way he played them especially live tells me he actually could have went to be one the best of all time. Van Zant said the the band would be in Steve’s shadow one day. That just blows my mind but it’s sad that they were taken so soon

9/14/19 On This Date In Music: Happy Birthday to Steve Gaines . He was born on September 14th 1949 in Seneca , Missouri and raised in Miami , Oklahoma . He is the younger brother of Cassie Gaines and both were members of Lynyrd Skynyrd . Steve was a guitarist and songwriter for the band and shares a birthday with Ed King , who was also born on September 14th 1949 . Steve joined the band just in time to record One More From The Road in the Fox Theatre in Atlanta after jamming with Skynyrd for several days . Cassie , who had joined the band as a member of the Honkettes in December of 1975 suggested Steve when they were looking for a replacement for Ed King and he was invited to join after they jammed with him for a couple of days . Unfortunately , Steve and his sister were both killed October 20th 1977 in the plane crash that ended the original Lynyrd Skynyrd . Steve did contribute a couple of songs to the Street Survivors album " You've Got That Right " which he co-wrote and shared lead vocals duties with Ronnie Van Zandt and " I Know a Little " which he wrote before joining Lynyrd Skynyrd and " Ain't No Good Life " also written by Steve and one of the few Lynyrd Skynyrd songs to feature another lead vocalist other than Ronnie , Steve played and sang it . Ronnie was quite impressed with Gaines in the small amount of time the two worked together . Steve would have been celebrating his 70th birthday today .

Steve was so amazing. I have his album "The One in the Sun". By Steve's right and my humble opinion, this could have sold itself back in its day. I have such a... well I'm not sure what word I would put on it... or... how I would describe it but here it goes (keeping in mind Steve was brought in by his sister Casie to fill up a need brought up by Ronnie) In a different woeld in a different time regardless had the tragic plane crash happened or not... I would have llike to have seen Cassie cross over into Steve's band Krawdad and have the influence of Ronnie VanZant (and Lynyrd Skynyrd) pull them into the industry. Steve had the chops, Ronnie was the man. Though likely they would have shared the plane with Lynyrd Skynyrd anyway and less roadcrew would have been onboard. I don't know I guess, it's my dream world... God bless Lynyrd Skynyrd Band. Grateful someone recorded this version of "Ain't no good life".

Interesting note, didn't know that this was the only solo song by SG without Ronnie. SG was great ain't no doubt, but I can recognize GR 's riffs like a signature in just about all of Skynyrd's songs. Gary and Allen were fantastic in their day, but it often seemed that the band had to have that third guitarist to provide direction for them.
