Ed King was the only dude that could lay it down like allen played it in my opinion. His playing on the solo screamed straight practice and pure heart

Ed King does an AWESOME job on the solo......hard to play/mimic Allen's greatness on Freebird but Ed does a damn good job here.
@inquiry72 жыл бұрын
Ed does such an amazing job here it makes me think Allen might have picked up a little of Ed King. Don't forget in the first album "Pronounced" Ed was by far the most experienced in the studio. Of course Allen played the solo note for note every time so he probably wrote the solo.

Ed King, Ed King, Ed King ! Love all of em. So emotional...so real.

@@inquiry7 As the story goes, Allen wrote that solo when he was 17 and stuck it in his back pocket. Finally found a use for it some years later, and the rest is history!

There are no words to dercribe the feeling that I feel when I hear this song. This is a true masterpiece.
@rivermandan915 жыл бұрын
I was at the tribute tour concert in Jacksonville, Florida (Skynyrd's hometown). To say people were emotional was an understatement. The backup singers were all crying their eyes out, at the site of the entire crowd reduced to tears. Personally I cried through the whole concert and unashamedly I might add. I wasn't alone lots of people did.

Talk about a moment in time! Between that and the show in Birmingham the 10th anniversary of the plane crash those were moments for sure! This is the band that inspired to play music and guitar for the past 7 years. Probably saved my life many times to. LONG LIVE THE MUSIC OF THE LYNYRD SKYNYRD BAND!

We were in the front row of the balcony @ the Tower Theatre outside of Philly when Rossington Collins Band performed an instrumental Freebird with RVZ's hat on the mic stand. I honestly was worrying the balcony was going to collapse it was bouncing so much. Summer of 1980, I believe.

@ 1:55 there is an edit & segue into the audio from the '76 Live LP audio then back to the '87 performance in time for King's interpretation of Collins' classic solo. -P.S. The TeleBird was a creation of the late Gary Smalley of The American Music store (pre 1995), and was a Guitar Tech for LS as needed.
@simoncasson332710 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the nuggets on the Telebird - interesting stuff... wonder how the hybrid plays? Recall Allen Collins mixing up Fender Strat bodies/Tele necks. Once Ed departed, sound got thicker/heavier... talking of which, 2 yrs ago missed Peavey Mace 160w combo '77 - damn it - sold £200 on E-Bay.

I remember back in 87, when they did the first reunion tour, I forget which band member it was who said he never saw Ronnie write ANYTHING down. So long as the guitarists remembered a given song's riff, Ronnie always remembered the words.

This is a beautiful tribute. Brother to brother. Your brother is truly a free bird now. I will put a feather in my visor in my car as a tribute to all the free birds alive and or dead. I am a free bird and I salute all the freebirds. I salute all those who think they are grim reapers because they survived death and it is my mission to let them know they are angels in disguise. To all the angels in disguise. I hold up a bottle of Jack Daniels. I don't drink but I still hold a bottle in case.

====If you love this song, look for Green Grass and High Tides by the Outlaws. An amazing ten-minute southern rock anthem you will also love, with a screamin' hot guitar section! =====I think it was great that during the Rossington-Collins years and during the early reunion years, they only did FreeBird as an instrumental, leaving out the late Ronnie's vocals. They didn't have to do it that way but they did and I give them credit for it.
