This is Cali in 1977 and no one was bitchin' about the huge rebel flag in the background. No one back then saw this flag as racist.

I'm glad you got to experience this! Sadly on Oct.29th 1977 Ronnie Van Zant (the lead singer) along with Steve Gaines (the guitarist in the burgandy pants) died in a tragic plane crash. 22 others including everyone on stage that you see here were severely injured. The pilot and copilot, Cassie Gaines a backup singer, and sister to Steve, and a crew member also died. RIP and thanks for the epic performance!

Their plane crash was October 20th, 1977 not October 29th. and the crew member you speak of was actually the band's long time friend and Assistant Road Manager Dean Kilpatrick.

I'm from Mississippi and not long ago had to travel to Louisiana for family. On the way back, I stopped at their memorial in Magnolia, Mississippi. It's in the middle of nowhere but about 1/4 mile from where the place actually crashed. There are 3 large, beautiful monuments and on one of them if Free Bird and that infamous first line, "If I leave here tomorrow, would you still remember me?"

@@guyray1504 The second and last Atlanta pop fest was in Byron. They didn't play there either. Famous story about it though. Jimi Hendrix was chatting with Steve Vest. Told him how much he liked Lynyrd Skynyrd. Vest couldn't figure out how he had heard them since they didn't have an album out yet. He found out later that Jimi had been poking around in Duane Allman's private stash of music and heard an unreleased recording that Duane had because he was good friends with the band. At that time, Skynyrd was still playing in their back yard.

Found out the next morning the facts RIP RONNIE, Cassie, and Steve. WE love you and miss you. The MC at the end says it's hard to believe they guys are not from California. What a joke. yes, great. too bad that I was only 5 y.old at that time, my teen years were mostly in the 80's, so I went to shows mostly in the 80's & 90's, I went to Pink Floyd, AC-DC, U2, ZZ Top (once each), then Metallica (5 times between 1985 & last summer (2023), I could recommend 2 other live performances with total crazy crowds, but not related to Lynyrd Skynyrd. ACDC Thunderstruck Live from River Plate 2009: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/pMV3ebFkxpbdmmQ.html The 2nd is Metallica, Master of puppets from Québec Magnetic show--I'm partial to this one, because I was there for the entire show (even lost 2 teeth there--no fight, but a guy next to me jumped too high & hit me with his elbow--was fine, it's part of the trip to go in huge crowd: bruises, small cuts, smashed toes & all kind of things like that happen. He gave me the last half of his weed joint and we left in good terms--here's the link, but they have other songs on their own y-tube channel: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/aMxhgdxomcXTpWQ.html Have a nice day, both of you. & have fun watching these videos & others.
