Summary:
By the time Lynyrd Skynyrd played this sold-out show at San Francisco's Winterland ballroom, they had become the unmistakable kings of Southern Rock. Spearheaded by charismatic frontman, Ronnie Van Zant, the group had taken southern boogie from the swamps and brought it to the masses.
There is an enormous amount of energy and power in the multiple guitar mix of the band, and that is clearly apparent when they launch into solos on these songs. The group had built a solid following via AOR radio by 1975, and songs like "Sweet Home Alabama" and "Free Bird" had given the band enormous crossover appeal. The group was coming off two hugely successful albums, its debut (pronounced leh-nerd skin-nerd) and 1974's Second Helping, and they had recently replaced original drummer Bob Burns with Artimus Pyle.
This show was recorded during the band's tour promoting their 1975 album, Nuthin' Fancy, and it features Lynyrd Skynyrd at the top of their game. It was also one of the last shows featuring their original three-guitar lineup, as Ed King left the band midway through the tour. Skynyrd confidently played its brand of riff-driving Southern fried rock boogie to near capacity crowds on this entire '75 tour.
Poignant songs like "The Needle And The Spoon" are balanced against established Skynyrd rockers such as "Saturday Night Special" and "Gimmie Three Steps." Songs like "Whiskey Rock-A-Roller", J.J. Cale's "Call Me The Breeze", and "Sweet Home Alabama" are played here in their early forms-many of these classics would re-emerge as part of the must-do repertoire of so many country artists.
The band ends the show with a predictable but crowd-pleasing, version of its radio anthem, "Free Bird." Sadly, the band would change drastically when some of its members, including lead vocalist Ronnie Van Zant, would die in a plane crash two years after this show was recorded.

I was born in 70 but didn't come to love this band until I was in my late 30s or early 40s. My husband always listening to classic rock and every time I would hear a song that I loved I'd say who sings that honey he'd say Lynyrd Skynyrd! So then I wound up buying that three or four CD disc set by Skynyrd with the green cover. I forget the name now cuz I don't listen to CDs anymore but I loved every song on there! I wish I had been an adult when they were touring and could have gone to see them. That would have been the best memory ever!

Second Helping and Nothin Fancy are the best albums Skynyrd ever did, and Ed King played guitar on both........ Coincidence? No sir! Still can't believe he played bass on "Pronounced" or most of it that blows my mind. His first day on guitar after Leon came back he wrote Sweet Home Alabama! Ed, Allen and Gary functioned so well together. They always knew what to play, what not to play, and when. Such a great guitar team.

Didn't realize Ed King was as good of a slide guitarist as he is. That is some LS magic to have had as many great guitarists as they have. Alan and Gary, always awesome. Between Steve Gaines and Ed King, it would be hard to say which one was actually better. Really enjoy all the pickers. How talented is LS. Songs such as this one and Michelle, Women of Mine and Searching are just fantastic! It's been a pleasure running across them.

Zeppelin had already played six nights in a row that summer in 77 and Nugent was going to open for them but(sigh) the crash happened and that was end of it. Ronnie felt playing at The Garden for the very first time was going to put him, Gary, Steve, Allen, Artimus, Leon and Billy and the Honkettes at the top of the level with the Stones, The Who, Zeppelin and Aerosmith since they had just made and released their best album in Street Survivors. As everyone can see. Ed King was the sound of the band, at that time. Mad props to Rossington and Allen, but it was evident that Ed was the dude.

Lyrics New York City is a thousand miles away And if you ask me, I'll tell you that's OK Now I'm not trying to put the big apple down 'Cause they don't need a man like me in town I pick cotton down on the Dixie line Work hard all day tryin' to make a dime But that's alright, that's OK by me 'Cause that's the way that it was meant to be Big city, hard times don't bother me I'm a country boy, I'm as happy as I can be I don't like smoke chokin' up my air And some of those city folks well they don't care I don't like cars buzzing around I don't even want a piece of concrete in my town I like sunshine, fresh clean air Makes me feel like you wouldn't care but That's all right, each to his own But one smell from the city And this country boy is gone Big city, hard times don't bother me I'm a country boy, I'm as happy as I can be Well, I don't want to even read about it Let me tell you something, let me tell you true What's right for me might not be right for you Well, you live your way, I'll live mine And I hope that your happy all the time I pick cotton down on the Dixie line Work hard all day tryin' to make a dime But that's all right, that's OK by me 'Cause that's the way that it was supposed to be Big city, hard times never bother me I'm a country boy, I'm as happy as I can be Let me tell ya...I said Big city, hard times never bother me I'm a country boy, I'm as happy as I can be Ooh, that's my way, baby I don't want you to even tell me about the big city I don't want to read about it...
