Thanks! Spy hunter has to be one of my top five games from my childhood in the 80's Thank you you for posting this.

The arcade in my location had an enclosed sit down version of the game which made playing/driving abit more realistic and possibly helped to achieve higher scores. Great old game and great video, thank you.

Spy Hunter was my absolute fave back in college. One of the arcades down by campus had one that spent no small amount of time with the dreaded Out Of Order sign on it. The manager was able to mitigate the problem by moving the machine closer to his office; according to him, there was some jackhole who would just lean his full weight on one side of the steering wheel until the pin snapped. This has been another chapter in the ongoing saga of Why We Can't Have Nice Things.

Great video and I enjoyed playing this game back in the day. This seems among your most difficult repair jobs. But watching these video are educational and fascinating. I know what sprites means now besides sodas. On to part 2, you can do it-lol!

awesome! theres a power supply conversion kit for spyhunter that costs 45 bucks. the kit lets u use a modern switching power supply. it eliminates the old suitcase and secondary power board. i have a dead spyhunter cab thats been sitting for a decade and sometime soon i plan to get it working so i really like the videos you are making here. thanks.

I've never had any luck with those switcher kits on MCR games.... the MCR stuff has a weird issue where static throws up on the screen when the screens change, and lots of buzzing in the audio.... with the switcher kit, sometimes you get a problem where when the lights on spy hunter light up on the bezel, it makes the audio buzz. I just rebuild the original stuff which is fairly reliable (for instance, this power supply is still working from 1983!) and it seems to work much better.

Like I've said it before: Spy Hunter is sure to certainly much better than Rally X. Knowing that it's more sophisticated. The video arcade game machines side art is a little more realistic looking.

that buzzing sound always scares me, you never know if the power is going pop off or not. I had a TV once that after a year or so it began making that noise, then one day after a few minutes of being on there was a loud POP like a small light bulb breaking and it instantly turned off.

Probably blew up a capacitor or something :) With me It doesn't bother me too much because i'm pretty confident I can fix it if it breaks... and like you see, I'd already looked everything over one at a time so I was pretty confident it wouldn't break anything. In this case the hum was because the cap in the power supply was so old that it was allowing ac voltage through the dc circuit, makes everything hum.

WANT!! Yea without the batt on ps sometimes they won't boot or will but very weird. You can run a 5v jumper over to the + batt connection without the batt tho. Got a little AC ripple there but hey SHE BOOTED UP!! Replaced caps on the isso board if you have some audio popping going on later. Caps on audio amp not a bad idea either.

There's something about the reset line and the battery line, the game will run fine without the battery but won't if the reset line is messed up. If the reset line is messed up, it will run fine if the battery line is fine. That's why a lot of people cut the reset line, if your battery is still installed (and working) it will boot the board. If the battery is dead, AND the reset section doesn't work, the board won't boot. Crazy. They're connected somehow on the gameboard, I tried to figure it out on the schematics one time but couldn't track it down.

Joe's Classic Video Games yea my Tron I cut battery out cause I had a replacement but took couple weeks to get to it. Every time I'd turn it on it would lock up with a blocky white screen but you coin up it would boot. Others it might act weird but still boot up. I put the battery in finally and has not done it since or last 50 start ups anyways
