Christopher did a great job with the part.

First I heard of the religious background of his family-found that interesting. I did appreciate his positive portrayal of Christianity, and he was my favorite character.

William played his role of Father Mulcahy very convincingly. I know God has a sense of humor...He made us, and He tolerates a lot of our whacky behavior 🤪

He was a very good actor. One time he appeared on The Carol Burnett Show as part of an improvisation group. That skill almost cost him the role on MASH. The producers wanted the scripts done as written. Too many shows make fun of religion, especially Christianity. Be respectful. Do some research too! Radar once told of his mother and a new male friend going square dancing at the Pentecostal church. Believe me, that wouldn't happen in real life! You'd only find dancing in the Spirit or unto the Lord in such churches. I still wonder if the producers of 7th Heaven knew any real ministers. Father Mulchay was a pretty liberal minister. He played poker, piano in the bar, and drank. AfterMash had him drinking heavily after his hearing loss. But he was still one of TV's better portrayals of a minister. In Point of View he noted being familiar with most faiths. He did have some trouble trying to sound like a Southern Baptist. What if one of the soldiers was Pentecostal? After the series, he did commercials for Our Lady of the Lake in Baton Rouge. This role led to him advertising for a Catholic hospital. It'd cost more had he worn the uniform.

William Christopher's portrayal of Father Mulcahy was unusual for the '70s in at least one way. Back then, it was common for religious characters to be played as shady, hypocritical or dim-witted people. One of the great facts about M*A*S*H and William Christopher is that Mulcahy was a warm, decent and intelligent person doing his best under terrible conditions.
