Man, I wish there were more KZfaqrs like you these days. Straight to the point (Not a beautifully shot film about you making a cup of coffee first, then a look around your studio, then Square Space sponsorship advert, then you trying to sell your Lightroom Presets). This is direct, to the point, with great audio, focus and good volume of background music. Come back to KZfaq PLEASE. Cheers Andy.

I watched this again. It’s pretty quick. I’d like a slow and long tutorial on using the focus points in various situations, birds in flight, models in pose, different situations. I don’t at all feel a mastery. Canon 5 DS R. THere are many options so maybe elaborate on each AF point option. I’m a bit thick perhaps!

I'm the same @John P I'm a budding wildlife photography and would love to get a better grasp of what focus points/focus modes would best suit birds in flight, small birds and large still birds! I think it would be great if you could do some real world scenarios, say being outside and seeing some birds and maming and elaborating on the decisions you make re: focus points, auto focus modes etc! Great video, looking forward to the next one.

Yes Heath and for example: I have a spot in a slight little valley with a river maybe 20 feet across and perhaps a little wall of about 15 feet on one side and then a gradual climb on the other side and both sides have lots of trees. I like to get birds flying down the river but with all the trees in the background maintaining focus points is difficult. How would someone deal with that, would be a good pointer as well? I imagine it will be some sort of single focus point placed on the animals and then let the Settings take place as it moves. I use back button focus by the way

In order to get the auto-focus grid to show up as described (using the M-fn button or grid-select button) you need to be in the "Info" menu, otherwise those buttons control shooting functions per your menu settings.

Hey jason, thanks for showing me some really useful information about the autofocus! I'm a musician by trade, and wanna offer you a small bit of advice, instead of flaming you for the music like everyone else. If you consciously mix the audio feed of your music to be significantly quieter than your voice, you can probably keep background music, and not have it distract viewers. Psychology dictates that we pay attention to the loudest transient noise in our surroundings. It's a survival method to be able to hear a tree falling next to you, or hearing the oncoming loom of a thunderstorm and approaching shelter. In music, especially pop music, we intentionally mix the vocal to be LOUDER than the rest of the song, so there is more contrast, and your attention is immediately drawn to that sound (in this case your spoken word). I didn't love the tune you picked either, but I'm sorry everyone just bashed you without trying to offer any insight!!

Thank you for this video, but I do have a question. How are you getting to that initial menu with the AF drive that appears at 1:45. I press the AF drive button like you are, but it does absolutely nothing. I can get to the AF drive from the menu option in my 5DM3, but I only see AF Mode on the top, AI Servio AF and then it gives me three choices like you have. I don't see Drive Mode or Autospeed continued choices. Help!

I should add, my camera was working just fine, all of a sudden it started locking the focus so that by the time it took the picture, the subject is no longer where the initial focus point was causing every photo to be out of focus. I was photographing a sled dog race (which I've done before). I also have the back focus button enabled, if it helps you to know.

Thanks for the tutorial Jason. I've got a problem with my camera, I can see the autofocus marker on the viewfinder eyepiece but I can't see it when I switch it on to show on the display? any idea why?
@JasonBabakaiffPhotography
@JasonBabakaiffPhotography 4 жыл бұрын
First of all check the type of focusing mode your camera is set to. Is it Single AF? If it is in Continuous AF you may not see the AF marker show up on all older DSLRs. Depends on your camera, most DSLR cameras up until more recently use the mirror and prism to focus. So when you switch to "live view" you are disabling the main type of focus and activating a secondary focus system with is slower. You may need to give it more time so just hold the shutter button down half way. If you can hear the lens searching for focus continue until if finds your subject. If this did not help to solve your problem then please let me know you camera model and I can continue to help you.

Hi Jason, I own the 5dlll with a Tamron 24-70mm f.2.8 and I always have big focus problem in low light, especially in the clubs, can you suggest a good setting for that kind of condition?? thank you so much Clemente
@JasonBabakaiffPhotography
@JasonBabakaiffPhotography 4 жыл бұрын
Changing settings won’t help as much as using one of Canons flashes with infrared (even when it’s turned down to the lowest setting). This is because the flash sends out infrared light to help the camera focus. You can use the 600EX, 470EX, or 430EX. The Tamron lens you have is a good lens but your camera will be able to utilize the Canon 24-70 a little better to improve low light focusing but it will be marginal, probably not worth the extra cost. I would suggest investing in a flash, and shoot with it pointed to the ceiling and turned right down mostly just using the focusing assist function.

@JasonBabakaiffPhotography

Study the focal plain. Even though specific AF points are light up the focal plain is always flat, and exactly perpendicular to the direction of the lens (in tilt-shift lenses the focal plain is still flat, just the angle shifted.) I suggest practicing an aperture like f8 or f11 if you want to make sure more objects in view are in focus. Hope this helps.

What I think you are asking is what AF mode to shoot in, and why. I like focus motor setting in AF "One Shot" (with beep on), and AF Lock by holding down the shutter button half way. How I use this method: Move your centre point AF (I use 9 AF points in centre) over the part of the subject you want to be in focus, hold the shutter button down half way and re-frame to compose your shot. By doing it this way I can quickly and accurately focus on the exact subject of my choice with out having anything or anyone else in my field of view interrupt the focus. ...I usually shoot with an aperture of 4-5.6 for portraits. Let me know if I was able to answer your question.

If you want to ensure more people are in focus in a group, try using an aperture like f16 or f20. Stay away from f2 or f4. You will need lots of good light, and increase your ISO as needed.

hi , I follow the back button focus and when i go back and check my photo in computer and use a plug in in lightroom to check my focus point some places it say that none of my AF points are locked in the image . Can you suggest me how i could ensure that i have the focus locked

Hi Vaishak, good question! Above all els, this exercise is to make sure that our images are in focus. I don't know about the plug-in that you are using, but what I'm hearing you say is that you believe your images could be sharper if they had been in better focus. You can check out my other video to make sure that it is not your lens that is out. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fchdlNKirZytZ6M.html Let me know if this helps!

Hi Jason thank you for your time ... i tested my camera and all my leans for the micro adjustment. out of my 5 lens 4 were giving expected results and 1 i corrected. My concern is still when I am shoring landscapes. If you can spare some time for me i would like to mail you an image shot by me to get your review on the foucs ...

Where in the video did you cover M-Fn?
@JasonBabakaiffPhotography
@JasonBabakaiffPhotography 3 жыл бұрын
0:44, M-Fn is your Multi Function button. Helps to toggle through your focusing clusters. Thanks for pointing out that I didn't explain that very well.

hi, how do you make the af settings show on the LCD screen instead of the view finder? I recently purchased a 7d mk ii and it tends to only show the settings in the view finder instead of on the LCD screen. thanks!

+lacrosse1991 Try first by pressing the "INFO" button until you see your shooting data displayed on the screen. Then press the "Auto Focus Grid" button mentioned in the video. Thanks.

Thank you for the video. Which setting would be best for shooting hockey ?

Every one is different so you will have to see which works best for you. But I would suggest starting with AI-Servo and 61 Point AF. Or if you are like me and want to choose a more specific spot where to frame your subject you can choose Zone AF or even Surround which would make it easier to get your subject in focus and not someone standing in front. However it may be a bit harder too because you then have to actively move your focal point around depending on the direction of play. Sorry for the delayed response.

Great video but you really need to get rid of the bass back ground as it makes it hard to focus on what you are saying...Still good though.

+Uptown Wedding Photography NJ Hi Uptown, not sure which button you were referring to so I'll just run through a few of them here. The AF "Grid" you will see all the AF points turn red and start to flash until you press it again or hit the shutter; The AF/AE Lock will show an asterisk (star) in the viewfinder when it is on; The AF-ON you will notice the lens search for focus (with lens in AF mode [as apposed to manual AF]); The info button will not affect the shot or show in the viewfinder just cycle what is being displayed on the rear screen. ...Keep in mind that some of these buttons like AF-ON and AF/AE Lock can be programmed to have other functions including do nothing if you are worried about pressing it accidentally.

+Jason Babakaiff Ah...sorry I meant to write it was the AF-ON button I was talking about. However, you have answered it anyway and I appreciate all the detail. The 5D III is an awesome camera which i love using for weddings, etc. This is a function I have not really used so looking forward to using the AF-ON button...Thnaks...........Philip

Hi Jason, I have a Canon 6D. You seem to be very knowledgeable about focus points so perhaps you can answer this question. Why are the autofocus points showing up in my photos on camera?
@JasonBabakaiffPhotography
@JasonBabakaiffPhotography 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Louise, thanks for commenting! Let's see if I understand your question. After taking pictures, when playing back your photos on the camera, you can see certain AF points over your photos. Not to worry - they are not actually a part of your image i.e., they won't print that way. Your camera is just showing you where and what AF points were used for each photo. To turn this off hit Menu; (in the blue play back section you will see an option called "AF point disp.", select that and change to Disable.

Hi, thanks for taking the time to share your knowledge, easy to follow instructions and very useful, but do you really need the annoying base music? it distracts from what you are teaching. Thanks again
