The Supreme Court, towering above, is the highest judicial authority in the People's Republic of China. It oversees all criminal and civil cases nationwide and has the power of judicial interpretation, which is akin to legislative power. Today, let's talk about the downfall of the once high-ranking judge of the Supreme Court, Zheng Xuelin. Old Zheng. I've known him for nearly 20 years, and his contact number is still saved in my phone. After I was released from prison, we exchanged New Year greetings but haven't been in touch since then; he also ended up in prison. While serving time, I often saw familiar old friends from outside. Seeing them with their worried and hopeless faces, I often used a couplet I wrote to console them: "Early in, late in, in sooner or later; early out, late out, out sooner or later." The horizontal inscription is "In and out."
Later, Old Zheng and I kept in touch. He was a good person, with no bureaucratic airs, often complaining to me about the workload in the filing court and the lack of perks. Later, he went to Chongqing High Court as a deputy president, where he complained about feeling lonely and bored. Once, on a business trip to Chongqing, I visited him, and we had hotpot together. I joked with him, saying, "The girls in Chongqing are all so pretty; with your wife not around, you better behave yourself and not get into trouble." Old Zheng, feeling deeply, said, "Sigh, the girls in Chongqing are indeed pretty, but too spicy. Just like this hotpot, delicious but hard to digest." Indeed, he did get into trouble. According to the disciplinary commission's report, he had problems in that area.
At that time, I was very confident, thinking Old Zheng would surely speak up for me. If he just truthfully said, "There's no legal basis for such detention," I would be released immediately. Once released, my case would be almost resolved. But no one expected that Old Zheng would sign the extension of my detention without a word, twice in a row. Unbelievable, right?
After my final verdict, my wife and father-in-law went to the Supreme Court to appeal with my documents. He arranged for an old judge to meet with Wei Hua and my father-in-law in a private room. After listening for a long time, the judge said, "There are many problems in Inner Mongolia. We'll put Du Wen's case aside for now. Go back and wait for a notice. Don't come again unless notified." There was never any notice. The so-called notice came from the news, stating that Old Zheng had been transferred, retired, and then imprisoned. That's why I call him an old friend on a different path.
Actually, I understand Old Zheng; I don't blame him. After all, one's position dictates their actions. I just want to say that there is no friendship in officialdom. I want to remind all friends not to consider officials as friends. Those you consider close friends will be unlikely to stand up for you or deceive your family when you are in trouble. As for helping behind the scenes, does it happen? Yes, but it's extremely rare. I think Old Zheng must understand this well. He wouldn't resist; he would obediently accept any unreasonable judgment. Because he knows better than anyone that the Communist Party's court has never been a place for justice and reason.
