Translating Ma'alaqat Imru' al-Qays into English was a challenging task that took me over 48 hours to complete. One of the most difficult aspects was selecting English words that would maintain the poem's meaning and strength while also adhering to its rhythm. ""Ma'alaqat Imru' al-Qays" is a well-known poem attributed to the poet Imru' al-Qays, who was a prominent figure in pre-Islamic Arabic literature. The poem is often referred to simply as "Ma'alaqat" and is known for its lyrical and emotional style. The poem that tells the story of Amr ibn Kulthum, a poet and warrior who fell in love with a woman named Layla. The poem is written in a highly ornate style and uses complex metaphors and imagery to describe the beauty of Layla and the intensity of Amr's love for her. The poem is also known for its portrayal of Arab tribal life and the conflicts between different tribes. It includes descriptions of battles and raids, as well as depictions of the honor and bravery of the Arab warriors. Overall, "Ma'alaqat Amr ibn Kulthum" is considered one of the greatest works of classical Arabic poetry and has had a significant influence on Arabic literature and culture. It is often studied in schools and universities as an example of the rich literary heritage of the Arab world. This poem expresses the pain and sorrow that comes with remembering a lost love and a cherished home, using metaphorical language about falling tears and wandering thoughts. Keep scrolling to find the translation in different comments. It could not fit ONE COMMENT PAGE. Translated by Ramzi Haroun, MD, FAAP

He stands as proud as any prince or chief. He leads a flock of sheep across the land, Through winding paths and valleys deep and wide. And when they scatter, like a broken band, He calls them back with firm and steady stride. In the company of a crazy, wild-haired hermit We followed him through the desert without a permit His magic herbs were tied in a bundle with thread And we were led to the place where they were bred We witnessed a fight between a bull and a ewe No water to wash the blood off, that's just how it grew The cooks among us prepared meat on a hot grill Or cooked in a pot, with spices to fulfill As we left, the hermit shook his head in despair His eyes had a glimmer, a hint of a rare As if the blood of the herbs was like a henna dye In a pot, boiling over, with a hint of white dye. If I but turn his back, his loins he'll seal, Above the earth I'd find no safe conceal. His lightening flash appears as if it's real, Like clapping hands, in love, it does appeal. His brilliance shines like monk's lamp in the night, Disgracing nobles in the worm-ridden blight. I sat with him, my friends on either side, Between brown tents, gazing, open-eyed. Water spouts from every fissure and crack, Drenching all, pouring from the blackened sack. No palm stem's left behind in Tima's track. I walk proudly, with a stride of power Like the beat of drums at dawn's hour From the floods and debris, a spindle's sail And a ringing bell in the valley's vale A grand figure, in Bagdad's streets Whose footsteps echo, with mighty beats And he crosses the desert's barren land Like the Yemeni lion, fierce and grand Its wilds teem with beasts, fierce and bold With tassels of silk, and manes of gold Cotton fields on his right, the breeze's delight And on his left, the veil of the night In Beisan, he casts his blessings free And its sanctuary from all danger, can always be

I weep from memories of a lover and a dwelling, As tears fall between the entrance, my heart swelling. The ink reveals a picture, beautifully designed, Crafted with threads from the north and the south combined. Behold the Aram plains, with their rugged terrain, Their valleys so deep, they resemble pepper grains. As if I'm back in the morning, we said our goodbyes, Standing by the dark-haired beauties, tears in our eyes. My companions stood with me, on this sacred ground, As we remembered the love that once we had found. The virgins' flesh they lay on soft and fat, Like tender meat, pale pink and far from flat, And when I entered Khidr, with eyes ablaze, The wailing winds cried out to me, with damning gaze. "You're but a scoundrel," they bellowed, full of hate, "You've slaughtered beasts and now it's us you'd berate!" But I spoke calmly, and bade her lead the way, "Unleash your reins, fair lady, let's not delay. "Don't shun me from your bosom, warm and dear, For like a rope, I've tethered myself here. And though my love may seem a distant dream, I'll nurse it gently, like a sleeping stream. "And when she weeps, her tears like dewdrops fall, I'll be her shelter, through it all." With a rift that remains, unhealed and unsealed, And on a desert day, my fate was revealed, With an oath that was sworn, but never repealed, Oh Fatima, cease this coddling, this yield. If I had ever planned to harm or to mar, Oh fair one, I would have refrained thus far, If my actions have ever left you a scar, Then use my cloth to wipe off your own tar. You delude yourself if you think my love will slay, And that my heart will obey whatever you say, Your tears only serve to kindle my dismay, Piercing my heart, with your arrows in play. A cheek of Khidr, whose secrets can't be gleaned I enjoyed it in leisure, without any rush deemed I surpassed guards and the fears of society Eager to die, if only they'd show some piety When the Pleiades appeared in the sky above Appeared during the veil that's finely wove I came, and her clothes were ready for sleep Except for the dress of the one who's favored deep She said, "May God give you no way out, And may blindness from you be removed, no doubt." I took her, and she walked behind me with pace, Tugging on my shirt, and coming along in grace. Following our footsteps, a tail of dust and sand As we reached the open square, it dispersed and fanned We found a hollow of rubble, beneath a palm's neck When it turned to me, its breeze made me feel a wreck The breeze of youth came, carrying the scent of cloves When I said, "Bring me some, so I may taste its troves" It swayed on the tough stalks, the breeze of the desert With its gentle white form, it was a sight to assert Its whiteness resembled the first light of dawn And its yellow hue seemed like the sun's color to fawn Its sustenance was the purest of water, untouched And its veins were like prison bars, finely etched.
