The 2 Wickets (Bases) are set about 22 yards apart and are about 9 inches wide made, up of 3 individual wooden posts, called stumps. stuck in the ground so they stick up exactly 28 inches out of the ground. There are 2 Bails (short sticks less than 3 inches long) set across the top of the stumps. The Pitcher, called a Bowler, tries to bounce the ball off the ground and hit the stumps to knock off one or both of the Bails for an out. The batter tries to deflect the ball so it doesn't hit the wicket. If he doesn't leave his spot (Crease) in front of the wicket, he gets to keep batting and protecting the wicket. If the ball nicks the bat and is caught before it hits the ground again, the batter is out, just like in baseball, but not until the Wicket keeper (the only defender allowed to wear gloves) catches the ball and hits the wicket to knock off a bail, either with his gloved hand or by throwing the ball at the wicket. It is a tough position just like in baseball.
