Mugen (stylized as M.U.G.E.N) is a freeware 2D fighting game engine designed by Elecbyte. Content is created by the community, and thousands of fighters, both original and from popular fiction, have been created. It is written in C and originally used the Allegro library. The latest versions of the engine use the SDL library.
I.K.E.M.E.N (short for Itsumademo Kanseishinai Eienni Mikansei ENgine) is a free and open-source fighting game engine designed to be compatible with M.U.G.E.N content, while also expanding on its feature set to allow for more flexible customization. The engine is notable for introducing stage zoom prior to the release of the M.U.G.E.N 1.1 beta, and for allowing netplay matches, a feature that is not supported in any official build of M.U.G.E.N.
Rivals of Aether is an indie platform fighter video game created by Dan Fornace, and released for Microsoft Windows in March 2017, for Xbox One in August 2017, and for Nintendo Switch on September 24, 2020. It received positive reception from critics, who commended its deep gameplay. Rivals of Aether is the spiritual sequel to Super Smash Land, a fan-made remake of Super Smash Bros., and therefore its gameplay mechanics are heavily based on the latter game. Each character must try to knock the others out of a two-dimensional arena. In addition to fighting game-style moves, characters can also use elemental-based attacks or passive abilities that also affect the stage. This creates a meta game of not only attacking other players but also affecting the arena itself. Gameplay in general favors offense more than defense compared to Smash Bros.; attacks can only be blocked by executing a timed "parry" rather than holding up a shield, and characters cannot safely grab edges when returning to the stage.
Street Fighter, commonly abbreviated as SF or スト (Suto), is a Japanese media franchise centered on a series of fighting video and arcade games developed and published by Capcom. The first game in the series was released in 1987, followed by six other main series games, various spin-offs and crossovers, and numerous appearances in other media. Its best-selling 1991 release Street Fighter II established many of the conventions of the one-on-one fighting genre. Street Fighter is one of the highest-grossing video game franchises of all time and is one of Capcom's flagship series with total sales of 48 million units worldwide as of June 2022. It is the highest-grossing fighting game media franchise of all time at US$12.2 billion, including 500,000 arcade unit sales.

I was a creator for MUGEN around 2001. I really love this game engine and the community. Unfortunate life events left me without a PC for about 5 years, and I never quite got back into it. I love watching the engine and the community evolve and grow, and occasionally binge MUGEN related content on KZfaq because it is so fun to watch. Excited at the idea of netcode. That makes it a lot more likely for me to try my hand at creation again.

Good video. Not too many videos on M.U.G.E.N. As for online, that's been spotty over the years. There were several attempts to get an online version of MUGEN up and running but it seemed that the scattered community was what kind of held that back for a time. At one point there were 2 or 3 different online MUGEN engines going around and that makes it hard to decide which one the community should be using. I didn't lurk too much in the forums of the sites so there are likely many other reasons but that's what I've gleamed over several years of playing and checking out MUGEN sites.

Sadly, last I checked, electbyte havent disappeared, they've broken up. Theres Ikemen but it gets updated too frequently and theres always the risk of the code you used becoming unsupported. Edit: The creators of the software that you use to make mugen content are making a build called mugenext but I wouldn't bank on that too much since the changelogs so far are minor changes. I dont see mugen as an Engine going anywhere soon or even in the far future. But the content creators are learning new ways to do better stuff so the quality of characters, stages and screenpacks will continue to rise and that's what I think will keep the engine alive

Nice video and story though. You should do a story about a game called Subspace a online only 2D spaceship combat game from the 90s. It is a little similar to Mugen in that it was originally published by a company and sold commercially. It was soon abandoned but revived through the fan community using a hacked version of the game server and client. It is still going 25 years later. Although the community has dwindled instead of growing stronger like Mugen.

Im not sure if you already know it, but there are fan proyects that go more far than just putting up characters, i know 4 proyects that have been around since a while exept for one, the first i want to talk about is... King Of Fighters Memorial, game that reunites all of the KOF characters into one game, it has a interesing story and some new characters and a whole screenpack (there are so many versions of this game that i dont know exactly what is the original, but from the times i played it i really had fun with the characters!) Another MUGEN that is of the same saga is KOF WING, this is pretty much better than the other one, with the characters we know and some new faces, and hell, the visuals of this game are incredible, and they recently announced that there will be a 2022 version coming out soon! The Third proyect i want to talk about is Sonic Fighter Blitz, this is a recent one and its a fighting game with some sonic characters, and i had fun playing with it as sonic, it does'nt have too much to offer, but its still worth the playing And finally, the one that i love the most: Hyper Dragon Ball Z, this game features characters of Dragon Ball Z with movesets completely different from one another destined for the competitive, all of these characters are unique, and every one of them has ultimates that are visually incredible, you can see how much effort they put into this, i highly recommend you to play it if you have'nt, because i think this game shows how far MUGEN can go.

Stopped playing mugen because I got bored. Then, I came across Ikemen GO 0.98.2 and it's an improved version of mugen. Having animated portraits in select screen, ai ramping and many modules created by the community just makes it really fun to play with. Although some chars may have problem running in Ikemen GO, most of it would just run fine.

Even though M.U.G.E.N has a big following and a very active community, nobody really knows who its creators are, as they chose to stay anonymous. The only known thing is that they’re originally from Ann Arbor, Michigan and were probably college students at the time they developed the engine.

If I download MUGEN or IKEMEN, I’ll be able to download the characters from Super Mario, Sonic The Hedgehog, Kirby, BBTAG, All Star Brawl, MultiVersus and Newgrounds Rumble.

Some may think it’s a bit of a stretch but I’ve always honestly felt that if there was no MUGEN, SSB might have never been a thing. Crossovers in fighting games existed but never to the extent of content or variety that you could see from this engine. I think it demonstrated what could actually be possible and how much more interest it could generate with access and resources.

I feel like these dates are wrong. I remember playing Mugen in highschool, which would have been 99-03, but according to your video the program wasn't out to the public and supported till after that. Even if I played it in college that's still 03-05

Sorry but the first winmugen beta didnt have a roster limit, you can still check for yourself. In fact it allowed an even more roster than dos and linux mugen; when winmugen plus came out the major improvements were related to the aspect ratio rather than characters limit
