Most of the negative feedback about 1PUNCH is going on about "cultural appropriation" and "that black guy standing around at 3:07", when I think this AN AWESOME debut with a great song and concept. Sadly, instead of actually noticing their talents & abilities, people are always so quick to say "this is racist" "this is an example of cultural ignorance and insensitivity" when it's obvious from this video that Brave Brothers really admires this era in hip-hop. Firstly, this video was SPECIFICALLY meant to be a HOMAGE to DEUX and SEO TAIJI & BOYS. Google them and you will see many of them have worn dreadlocks and attempted to emulate the GOLDEN ERA OF HIP HOP (yes there is an actual name for this era from the 1980's to early 1990's and it's not just "black culture" or "black people hip hop," and there is A LOT of respect for this era.) Even Zico himself has tried the cornrows and dreadlocks style (and then immediately gotten backlash for it.) isn't dreadlocks just a stereotype of african-american culture now? Because many people, from Egyptians to Indians have worn dreadlocks in the past way before African-Americans wore their hair in a similar fashion. Yes, it's true - aspects of this video are influenced by a very important part of African-American culture, which is hip hop, but it was in fact meant to reminisce over the Korean hip-hop movement in the 90s. This video WAS NOT meant to draw attention to African-American stereotypes and cultural differences, and misappropriate these aspects in a glamorous way - it was meant to pay respect to former Korean hip-hop icons that have changed and paved the way the hallyu wave has become today. Likewise, SAMUEL IS 14. Obviously most of his musical abilities are a result of training and practise. He hasn't had enough time to truly have his own style or colour in rapping/singing because he's too young. There's no point in critiquing him yet because he hasn't had the time to truly develop his own style. It's amazing already that he can dance and sing like this at his age, and it's really his and his parent's decisions as to whether they think bringing him into the entertainment industry at such a young age is a good thing or not, and whether the way he's acting (swearing, ect.) is an issue. Also, kids become trained at very young ages, such as G-Dragon & Taeyang at age 11, ect. Unfortunately or fortunately, depending on how you look at it, Samuel just had the opportunity to debut much earlier than they did. What I want to focus on is Jaewon - Jaewon's 21 and it's definite from this video that he can rap. Whether he has had the opportunity to show off his rapping talents is questionable, but many of the artists in Brave Brother's roster (i.e. Big Star) have lots of experience and have shown their own colours by rapping. I'm really interested to see the music that he's going to make in the future and where this duo is going. It seems unsure if Brave Brothers is going to keep the duo (probably depending on whether they're well-recieved or not) and so most likely they might be put into a larger group in the future. Whatever happens, think Jaewon has lots of potential and he's a very serious rapper - unfortunately, it seems like the fact that he's paired with a 14-year old kid detracts from the talent and dedication he has to rapping. Let's actually focus on the song and the idea behind the concept instead of criticizing everything that is in this video. Remember that even Jaewon is still young at 21. Both of them are. And so even though many people feel that they need a lot of work, they are not intentionally making African-American stereotypes look "cool" and "amazing" but rather they are paying a tribute towards former Korean hip-hop icons instead.
