Watch a demonstration of a DIY Automatic Tool Changing system. This video shows an isolation milling demonstration using 10 tools, all automatically changed without user intervention.
This Automatic Tool Changing System uses a convention collet chuck that is common on many spindles used for CNC Routers. The tools used are common carbide tools used for PCB milling. These tools use a plastic identifier ring on them. The tools do NOT need to be pre-set to a specific length or projection as the machine measures each tool length before starting the cutting operation.

I've been building my own CNC for a long time and basically your 3 axis platform is exactly like my builds, except you and your tool changer on the ER make you a whole next level above mine! Elite:)

@@MakingStuffwithChrisDeHut I'm just honest. I'm starting to think about one for my 6040 CNC. I have automated and rebuild some parts but the atc was always to complicate. Your design is awesome, relative simple and reliable. Love it!

Hi Marty, Yes, Centroid Acorn. At a later date I will be posting a video of why I abandoned MACH3 and switched to Centroid Acorn.

This looks amazing and something I would definitely try, have you compiled any schematics and or full material sheet with instructions on the build?
@MakingStuffwithChrisDeHut
@MakingStuffwithChrisDeHut Жыл бұрын
HI Carlos, Unfortunately, no. When I did this project it was more if an experiment to see if it was even possible. The engineering said it would work but there were a lot of "I dunno" things along the way. So, I never documented it well enough to be replicated.

From where I can learn more about Atc electronics and programing?
@MakingStuffwithChrisDeHut

There are many videos on this channel that explain how to program and use many types of devices such as motors and sensors. This is a good place to learn about programming in general. Cheers! Chris

Before locking, tool bits usually are not tight fit with collets, they will fall off, how to solve the problem?
@MakingStuffwithChrisDeHut
@MakingStuffwithChrisDeHut 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Ray-Char. These smaller bits stay in the collets nicely with just friction as they don't weigh much. I was concerned about this in early development and also magnetized a collet (which does work with carbide tools) to see if that would be of benefit. It certainly helped but wasn't needed in the end. Some collets are slightly tighter than others in the relaxed state, however, all of the ones I have were all slightly tight in the relaxed state. Other ideas to address that concern were to have the actuator set the collet in a slightly tight state (which is possible, but very difficult to achieve in practice). So, in the end, nothing was needed beyond ordinary collets and of course the small tools. I have not tested larger shank tools but suspect this concept will be more problematic with heavier tools.

@@MakingStuffwithChrisDeHut magnet will magnetize cutting tools. But for cutting non-ferrous material siruation and system, this is not a problem and will be a solution for the issue.
