My great grand father carried an m1 garand during WWII in the battle of Okinawa, we bought him a military surplus one shortly before he passed and he was deadly accurate for a 94 year old man and he demanded he be buried in uniform with the rifle by his side. His demand was granted, never cried more in m life.

get an adjustable gas plug.... modern ammo has higher gas port pressure and can bend your op rod. the op rod is bent slightly even when its good...but that makes it weaker (m14 solved this problem with a dead straight op rod) but, it also improves recoil....the bolt and op rod doesnt slam to a stop on the back of the receiver. it just costs nicely to a stop, only under spring pressure.... no slamming at all. could possibly improve accuracy as well due to harmonics. better longevity, better recoil, better accuracy....please, get an ADJUSTABLE! gas plug, take the 5 rounds to get it to work, (start backed off...fire once...get the action to almost cycle, then make small adjustments till you feel a change in recoil....from the bolt slamming....and back off. takes 5 to 10 rounds. also...either "inrange" or forgotten weapons did a m1 gas plug video....it will show you what i mean about "bolt slam". ive got this.... their are MANY like it, and you can buy this from like midway and save a few bucks. schustermfg...dotcom..../m1-garand-adjustable-gas-plug

I have to revisit this every now and then. In my 3 years in the USAF ('80s), I fired a Garand more than any other firearm. As a member of the HQ TAC/LAFB Honor Guard, I put hundreds of blank rounds through M1s. I still get goosebumps thinking about the honors rendered by those magnificent rifles. Thanks for the memories.

I own and shoot an M1 Garand pretty often. It is the most cherished gun I own for many reasons. One, I'm a big WW2 buff. The receiver on mine is dated February of 1942, barrel and walnut are brand new. Everything else is a mash up. Two, handling, shooting and reloading it gives me a feel of what soldiers that actually carried it into battle had to deal with. I'm not getting shot at and running through dirt and mud with it but it helps me realize how it would've been under good circumstances. Lastly, I love taking friends to shoot it. My shooting buddy that I take shooting the most often is my coworker. She's about 5'4 and 110lbs and her favorite gun of mine to shoot is the M1 Garand. Everyone that shoots it loves it. I love it for the historical significance and for the fact that it's just a good rifle.

I love the M1 Garand. A friend of mine let me use it out on the range a few years ago and it's very accurate with very low recoil. I had a bolt action 30.06 that kicked like a Missouri mule and left bruises on my shoulder. So if a person is lucky enough to buy an M1 Garand they definitely have a sweet shooter and a part of American history. One day when I win the lottery I will buy one too!

I was shooting 30.06 rounds out of a 1917 Enfield not too long ago and it left a big bruise on my shoulder. When I'm shooting a gun i can't tell if the recoil is bad or not. It didn't seem too bad but i guess it was bad enough to leave a bruise.
@bamarine247
@bamarine247 6 жыл бұрын
Parker Messex Yeah the Springfield 1903 also has a good kick to it. The Garand, 1903, and Enfield 1917 are all 30 06 but the semi auto Garand uses the recoil to cycle the action, so it doesn’t kick too much. The Springfield and Enfield are bolt actions operated all by hand so all the recoil goes into the shoulder

Great rifle. Whether in Europe or the Pacific, imagine facing those 30-06 rounds if you were the enemy. The BAR notwithstanding, a squad armed just with M1s could put up some pretty withering cover fire.

For roughly the first half of the War in the Pacific, the Marine Corps used the Springfield M1903 as its standard issue long arm. After Guadalcanal and seeing how well the Army's M-1's worked in combat, the Corps was convinced and began adopting the Garand as rapidly as possible, but it wasn't until part-way through or towards the end of 1943 that most Marine units were armed with them. Can you imagine facing a Japanese suicide charge with a bolt-action rifle? Sort of helps one to understand why SOP was for Marine units nearest the Japanese to have weapons hot with bayonets fixed pretty much at all times. Good thing they had BARs and Browning medium machine guns.... as well as plenty of grenades, flamethrowers and light artillery shooting canister rounds, too.

I'm not a gun owner myself but it was interesting to see this since my father was a WWII *COMBAT* rifleman. He ended up being the bazooka guy when he got over to europe. I have a picture of him with his rifle which he wrote they had to carry them even after the war was supposed to be over since about every town they went through had Germans who hadn't given up especially up in the hills where they had to go round them up. Watching this episode I can tell how loud just one rifle is and imagine an actual battle must have been incredibly loud.

I've watched your videos off and on for quite some time but finally realized I could get notices from you if I subbed your channel. I'm a life member of the NRA and have been for years. I'm 70 years old and joined when the dues were $7.00 a month if I remember correctly. In the 80's I got a life membership. I enjoy all your videos and especially like this one as my favorite rifle is the M1 Garand and I have 9 of them at this time. I did have 11 and gave one to my brother and recently sold one on Gunbroker. They are all top notch guns and it's taken years to find them, no random pieced together junk. One of them is a navy gun in .308 with the paper work signed by the secretary of the navy showing it was awarded to an enlisted man for winning a leg match using it. I love the vintage military rifles as well as the newer ones. I have several of the others as well that I won't go into. I do have one I'm very proud of I'll mention and it's a Springfield 03 I sent to Miltech in California a few years back and had totally refurbished. It looks better than the day it was issued to a soldier. I'm primarily a pistol shooter and shot bullseye matches for years, (conventional pistol to some) and my favorite pistol is the 1911. Thanks for all you do for the shooting sports. A short p.s. Do you know the ammo you use should be loaded with the proper burn rate parameters? The Lake City you mention in the video is good but not sure about the other. Improper burn rate in the powder can bend the operating rod. I reload all my ammo for the Garand. When I shot the John C. Garand matches at Camp Perry they supplied the ammo...Lake City.

As a student in ROTC (Marine) in High School back in 1973. As a squad Leader, I was issued the M-14 Garand. We did range shooting and field war drills with kind of a Red vs. Blue competition firing blanks. Observer scoring points. Fond memories ! ! I joined the Army after High School and given the M-16. One note of caution about the ammo...you must use only .30-06 ammo specifically designated for the M-1 Garand, as using modern high-powered hunting cartridges may destroy the gun. I bought cases of PPU ammo (made in Serbia) designated for the Garand and they work flawlessly in my gun

@therightstuffAK 8 жыл бұрын
+Mike Hawk yes I could do that...I'm aware that they're available. Most people who may pick up one of these rifles though typically are not aware that the pressures with the original gas plug and modern ammo factory made and not specifically for the Garand MAY cause the gun to be damaged or destroyed. And on a personal note, I prefer keeping mine 100% completely original, for authenticity.
