Part 2: Survival Doc refinishes the stock on his field grade M1 Garand from the CMP. General George S. Patton called the M1 Garand "the greatest battle implement ever devised." The M1 Garand was the first semi-automatic rifle to be generally issued to the infantry of any nation. It was the standard service rifle of the United States Armed Forces from 1936 until 1957, when it was replaced by the M14. However, the M1 Garand continued to be used in large numbers until 1963, and to a lesser extent until 1966 (when it was replaced by the M14. The M14 was replaced by the M16 rifle in 1970.) John Garand, a Canadian, was the designer of the M1 Garand. It is now available for American civilian ownership through the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP.)
The M1 was used heavily by US forces in World War II, the Korean War, and to a lesser extent in the Vietnam War. Most M1 rifles were issued to Army and Marine troops, although many thousands were also lent or provided as foreign aid to America's allies. Currently South Korea has one million M1 rifles that it wants to return to the U.S. but the gun-grabbing Obama administration is blocking the re-entry of these pieces of American history.
To order from the Civilian Marksmanship Program (thecmp.org) you must be a US citizen who has proof of citizenship, age, membership in a CMP-affiliated club and certificate proving competitive shooting participation. I recommend the Appleseed Project (Appleseedinfo.org) where you can get two day weekend training for only $70. The Appleseed Project is sponsored by the Revolutionary War Veterans Association (RWVA.org.) Yearly membership in the RWVA fulfills the membership requirement of the CMP and allows you to retake the Appleseed markmanship weekend as many times as necessary to shoot an expert rifleman's score, earning a rifleman's patch.
The CMP Mission: To Promote Firearm Safety and Marksmanship Training With an Emphasis on Youth. The CMP (full name the Corporation for the Promotion of Rifle Practice and Firearms Safety) was created in 1996 by Congress with these key mandates: (1) To instruct citizens of the United States in marksmanship; (2) To promote practice and safety in the use of firearms; (3) To conduct competitions in the use of firearms and to award trophies, prizes, badges, and other insignia to competitors.

I've used this stock cleaning procedure for a CMP M1, mosin, and a SKS within the last 3 years. Thank you very much. All of the stocks came out really nice cleaned and kept their personality.

1. Join the "Garand Collectors Association" and they will send you a membership card. 2. Fill out order form and get it notorized. 3. Make copy of Garand Collectors membership card, passport or birth certificate. 4. Show proof of marksmanship ie...FFL or C&R, DD214 5. Mail it off and wait about 45 days.

My snap ring pliers I purchased from harbor freight don't seem to have enough spread to get the clip off the rear upper hand guard. I wonder if they have different sizes of snap ring pliers?

I have used the dishwasher on old beat up stocks. Never place the handguards in the DW as the water can open up any cracks in the wood.

@53laborer I haven't seen a dishwasher that will boil water. The dryer will ruin the wood. Besides, I am the dishwasher around here. I don't have an automatic dishwasher.

I'm not an expert there. Try it. If not, you can probably sand the stock again and apply the stain.

I understand and appreciate the information you present in the video. However .. the "age" of the rifle is actually ONLY the receiver. The rest have been more than likely been replaced at least once during service and or when the gunsmiths at the CMP certified that rifle and many others for use. I can buy a "new" M1 Garand from the CMP that has a old receiver. The furniture and barrel will be brand new while the rest of the mechanics can be used. refurbished or new. Thank You for your time.

hi, so i removed the old finish from my m1 garand stock as well as a good amount of cosmoline and steamed some dents out, and i steel wool rubbed the whole stock several times and began applying coats of boiled linseed oil. It looks good, but it still has several divots and dents and I was wondering if it is possible to stand the stock even though i have applied about 3 coats of boiled linseed?

it would have been nice if you used a padded work surface. The stock ferrule swivel screw is usually staked in and is hard to remove. A hollow ground screw driver (grace or similar) is recommended. Otherwise your video is informative and useful.

Print and fill out the order form. Get copies of your documentation and motorized your signature on form. Send in the CMP and how your breath till they say it’s on the way. On second thought don’t hold your breath because it can be 18 to 20 weeks.

Your trigger guard is not from 1943. It is later than 1945. It is a stamped trigger guard. The 1943 has a milled trigger guard with a loop toward the rear of the guard. Why not field strip the rifle before removing the gas cylinder and front hand guard? I would not sand or remove any of the scuffs and dings out of the stock. Those marks show its history.
