Thanks for the video. I hand load 30-06 for about 35 cents a round. The most expensive part is the brass, but I collected around 1000 cases for free over the years from the local public range.

I’ve noticed that my range that people generally don’t leave the expensive calibers laying around your fortunate that you were able to find some. I don’t reload myself I haven’t made the investment in the equipment. Thanks for coming by!

You must have gotten lucky and had a load of powder stores up Most of the powders safe for the Garand have gotten INCREDIBLY expensive to the point that just the powder load can run up over 35 cents 😢

That's pretty cheap when a primer is .10c, powder .30c and a fmj bullet costs .30c. $.70 and that's with free brass in today's prices. At $.35/round I'll take 5000 rounds right now and kick in a bonus.

The PPU ammo loaded for the M1 is a lot cheaper than the AE and just as good.

Isn't that ammo a little to "hot" for the Garand? Do you run an adjustable gas plug? I'm inexperienced and don't want to damage anything. Thank you

@@OliverCloseoff69 As long as you get the PPU that is specifically for the M1 Garand you should be fine. I have been shooting that for years and never had a problem.

Great video! I bought some Sellier & Bellot Garand Ammo last year for much cheaper. Doesn't come up for sale too often though. I just love watching the M1 in action.

All fun and all, but unnecessary expenditure could be avoided by using literaly any 30.06 round in the 150-165 grain range

I tried buying this but then turned around and bought the gear to reload it 💀 the cost of a box of ammo was the same as the dies and trimmer to reload 30-06. With the trajectory of ammo prices it won't really be financially feasible to keep these rifles fed for most people unless you reload.

Just reload it 150gr bullet with 43gr of hod 4895 or imr 4895 very safe in a Garand they were designed to work in about 2700 fps out muzzle been doing this over 30 years. I NEVER GO OVER 168GR BULLETS with 45gr of hod 4895 or imr 4895.

Lol you are shooting your rifle with the equivalent of training wheels. M2 ball was 2805fps MV so your 2700 comment is wrong. They were designed for 174grn bullets so your 168grn comment is also wrong.

I have a recently acquired M1-Garand (4225532) 1952 - 1955. Was not properly cared for by the previous owner. Safety did not work because the trigger group wasn't installed properly, rear sights were messed up mainly from over-tightening, the sling was white and much too long (it wasn't installed on the front sling clip but on the stacking swivel). I have not fired it yet because I need to have the gas plug removed before I will feel confident in firing it. It has what appears to be a set screw to prevent the gas plug from being removed. If it is a set screw it is near the base threads of the gas plug. Both have been damaged from attempted removal. I have never seen any other Garand with this apparent set screw. Anyone else? I will be taking it to a gunsmith shop in a couple of weeks for a good checkup.

I can only make assumptions without seeing the gun in person, but it’s a good bet that yours was used by an honor guard at some point (American Legion, VFW) for ceremonies or funerals. I’ve had some experience around those groups and those weapons can live a rough life. Again just a guess without me seeing the weapons in person. Thanks for coming by!

@@cornfromajar3222 -- turns out that it was no set screw. It was welded to make it totally inoperable. The weld went through the gas cylinder, the screw, and the lock. And there was a very fine (thin) cut through the sight and down the the gas passage to the gas cylinder.

I had a catastrophic failure of my M1 while using a Schuster gas plug and hunting Ammo. It blew out the back end of the receiver and gave me a black eye. If I wasn't wearing eye protection, I likely would have lost it. I highly recommend people stick with 30-06 Ammo marked "For the M1 Garand."

Can I ask what loads you were shooting.. and if you actually adjusted your ADJUSTABLE gas plug lol. Or did you have it in tight as hell?
@tdethloff4696
@tdethloff4696 4 ай бұрын
@connor3925 I was using Sellar & Bellot 180 Grain loads. I remember in the instructions of the Schuster gas plug that you start making adjustments first with the screw almost backed out. (Allowing all of the gases to escape, and not cycle the op rod.) You then gradually screw it in tighter, usually a turn at a time, and then fire a round, you keep making adjustments until the action cycles reliably.

@@SamCulperJr Yes... and to be clear, the accident happened probably between 70 to 80 rounds fired of that ammo. I'd be happy to send you a photo of the damage. Now I'm sure that I did something wrong in the adjustment, but I'm not taking chances anymore. I've since rebuilt the rifle and I've been using M1 Garand approved ammo ever since.
