Apple has updated three Mac with its own M1 processors: the Macbook Air, the entry-level 13-inch MacBook Pro, and the Mac mini. Will Intel-based apps run? Will they be fast? Will they live up to Apple's battery life claims? Nilay Patel and Dieter Bohn have a thousand questions, and almost all of them have been answered.

I'm honestly so surprised that this went as well as it did. I wasn't expecting a dumpster fire or anything, but I was not really expecting much better than Intel based macs on non-native apps. Great job Apple. I have to say though, I had much higher hopes for the webcam after hearing about the better image processing. The main reason that webcams look so bad is the lack of a good strong ISP in normal computers. That truly is a dumpster fire.

That webcam problem is a hardware limitation. Excellent software and image processors can back up a below average hardware to a certain extent.
@williamfowl8670
@williamfowl8670 3 жыл бұрын
The problem isn't actually the hardware. It's the distance from the pcb. You see it with windows 2-in-1s. Their webcams are so much better than the laptops because the image data can be processed by the cpu directly. On laptops, the wired runs are via USB 2.0, which is terrible for latency and throughput.

@@jackdominiak445 it’s more about the fact that compared to almost every other laptop at similar price points you get a much better camera. It’s also the fact that more people are working at home and would expect a very good camera on a “Pro” machine rather than just an ok one. It’s apple being stingy again, as they are with reducing ports, and expensive r]RAM and storage upgrades. It’s right to call them out on this every single time rather than just accept it. Having said all that, these laptops and the apple mini are impressive, and I’m kind of tempted to get a Mac mini now. I see a lot of comments from windows users who are curious as well.

Air is the clear winner this round. Due to efficiency of the M1 chip, you get similar performance, similar battery life, and a similar screen for significantly cheaper. Based on what I’ve seen in this video, I don’t even see a need for the 2-port MacBook Pro to even exist. For example, Id much rather have the Air with 16GB of Unified memory for $1200, than pay $1300 for a base 2-port Pro. If you’re dead set on the Pro, it would definitely be worth it to wait for the upgraded AS chip with 4-ports and a higher performance ceiling.

@@theartshow1476 Nah, Mac users experienced it too when Intel didn‘t hold their huge promises on power efficient 10nm chips in 2016, which were supposed to be used for the 12“ fan-less MacBook. It was partly Intel‘s fault that the 12“ MacBook had to be discontinued. And now 4 years later Intel is still trying to deliver on those „efficient“ 10nm chips. *Edit: admittedly, Intel‘s new 11th CPU is quite good and competes with TSMCs 7nm node. But a little too late to be taken seriously at that point. And whether that decent quad core CPU is even scalable remains to be seen. It‘ll have to if they want to have any chance in keeping up with AMD and Apple.

They need to update the aging Surface Pro laptops to look like the Surface X and they and Apple really lost their minds with the prices on their ARM based laptops. I have the 12.9 inch iPad Pro and the 2017 Surface Pro and have no reason to upgrade either for a while so I'm hoping by the time I decide to do so that the very least Surface Pro laptops and the Surface keyboard get refreshed with a bigger track pad and smaller bezels. I'm hoping that Apple eventually gets Mac OS on iPad Pro since they did so well with their that Mac using their own processors.

Once Microsoft start to license out Windows on ARM OS that will definitely be a major step forward in app creation and adoption of developers making and optimizing apps.

I use photoshop to design things like event flyers, cd covers, social media images etc. And also use a software called Movavi to edit videos. Can the Air handle this easy or should I get the pro?

I have a 2010 macbook pro that I REALLY want to upgrade (I've already switched out the fan system, the battery, & the hard drive 4 times - I think it's time to move onto a new comp). I've been waiting for stupid things like the butterfly keyboard to be worked out. This seems like this is a good time to upgrade to, potentially, the M1 Air. I do have a question.. on my current Macbook I have the 2016 Adobe Design Suit .. which I think was the last disk collection they had before switching to Adobe Cloud. I don't have the funds to constantly pay for Adobe Cloud, so I want to carry over the old suit .. do you think they'll run on the M1?

I bought the M1 MacBook Pro (16GB RAM, 512GB Storage) and have been using it for two weeks. I use Zoom for work and also work with a lot of multi-track music so I thought the better microphone and the heavy lifting of the pro's active cooling would be worth the extra $300. So far, the fan hasn't turned on once. Lightning quick. Incredible battery life. I've been able to use it for up to 12-14 hours of heavy work before the reserve battery kicks in. Unexpectedly, I am in LOVE with the Touch Bar and it's functionality. I've set my favourites to pop up on the Touch Bar when opening a new webpage and it's surprisingly a lot quicker than the conventional "click & type" (Fun fact: if/when you get ads from videos you can use the Touch Bar to skip ahead instead of waiting the 5+ seconds). As for the two ports, so far I haven't needed more than the two. I bought a USB-C adapter for when I need more connections but so far it hasn't been necessary. 10/10 review, and a small part of me also wonders if the MacBook Air would have done just as good of a job, but I'm extremely happy with my new laptop!

I wouldnt say miles ahead in smart watch or laptop. Id say they are first in smartwatch, but not miles ahead of something like galaxy watch, which had features like variable refresh rate display and sleep tracking years before the apple watch got it, and so the competition is close there. In laptops, apple only competes in a small sliver of the overall market, and even then, its always a question of price when making the comparisons, so once again, even if you want to say they're first, you can't say they are miles ahead of people like Dell and Microsoft.

@@shadician short answer it isn’t for an average user :) the performance is similar, but because of the cooling fan in the Pro it can handle heavy work loads over longer time without a drop in performance. What are you doing with the computer? That’s the question. As they explain in the video, the MacBook Pro can be pushed harder because it has a fan, but the two models are basically just as powerful. When it comes to RAM, it’s not as clear cut. I can tell you the MacBook Pro 8GB model does not feel like an 8GB laptop. It’s hard to believe until you use it, but it can easily handle 4K footage in FCPX without breaking a sweat. You will hit a wall with the RAM if you’re really pushing the machine though.
