All youtubers review machines and rave about their video editing capabilites, and benchmark Premiere and Final Cut and Da Vinci Resolve. WE DO NOT CARE! VIDEO EDITING IS YOUR JOB, NOT YOUR VIEWERS'! We are not youtubers or video editors. We have very different jobs and needs. Did you ever wonder what benchmarks your viewers need to see? Is it too hard to ask and get some feedback?! PLEASE DO SOME SCIENTIFIC BENCHMARKS! Is it so hard to do a WOLFRAM MATHEMATICA or MATLAB benchmark?! Or a linear algebra benchmark? How about a simple matrix multiplication? Come on Max, you can do better.

Max, they’re binning these chips due to defects- not because of some anti-consumer motivation. This is normal (and planned), especially with larger dies on advanced nodes. It makes it so that they don’t have to discard these chips and can bin them into a lower product SKU.

If you don’t buy a new mac every time one comes out and you hang on to your computer for over 5 yrs, you’ll find that going all out means you can use a fully specced mac up to 10yrs. I’m on a 2013 15” full spec MacBook Pro and it is still doing it’s job today 8 years later. Yes, it will throttle under heavy loads but I have completed countless projects on it despite it being an 8yr old machine. If it wasn’t fully specced and contained a lower clocked model with weaker graphics, I wouldn’t be able to use it this long. Plus when you sell it down the road, your future buyer will be happy you didn’t skimp on hard drive size or ram. It’s time for me to upgrade so I will probably go for the max 24 or 32 core graphics with 32GB RAM and 2TB SSD. Might be overkill now but it will serve me for years to come.

6:04 Binning is not slowing processors on purpose. Its more of the categorization of chips/components that did not pass the performance standard and yet are functional enough not to be thrown as scrap. The non functional cores are disabled (which is the smarter option or else will cause problems while using the machine) so you still can get a 6 performance core machine.

One part of video editing that wasn't covered here is motion graphics (Apple Motion, After Effects, Davinci Resolve Fusion). Those apps are GPU hogs. So for people doing a lot of that kind of work may be able to justify those extra GPU cores and RAM. We'll see as specific app benchmarks start coming in. I got the M1 MAX/32 CORE GPU/64GB specifically for Fusion. I've been digging into that portion of Resolve lately and it's pretty painful on my underpowered Macs (2016 i7 iMacs). I'm hoping by splurging, it will be worth it for Fusion. We'll see. Same for Apple Motion. My current machines are still pretty solid for pure editing, but get destroyed in motion graphics apps. I'm also going to experiment with transcoding older video projects from ProRes to HEVC to save on drive space. I started going down that road a few months ago, but my non M1 Macs just can't handle the workload. It takes them FOREVER to transcode to HEVC. I'm hoping to let the M1 MAX run every night just transcoding to HEVC.

I gotta say, that $200 upgrade to get the two extra performance cores back is a tough pill to swallow. The CPU performance is the thing that will age the worst on these machines. With graphics, you can go all the way up to the crazy 32 cores. But you can't upgrade the CPU from the non-binned 10 core. So losing those two precious cores and having to spend $200 to get them back -- that's a tough one for me. I think I'm going to just bite the bullet, get the 10 core cpu w/24 core gpu, 1tb ssd and 32gb of ram and call it a day. I haven't filled up 500gb on my iMac on the six years i've owned it (I offload videos to external storage), so i think i'll be okay with 1tb. But i am waiting for the Max Tech comparisons before I do anything; I need to see the cooling difference between the M1 Max 16" with the beefier cooling and the equivalent 14".

@andreas7278

What you are saying that 16gb of unified memory works like 32gb is something you entirely made up. The speed of the unified architecture has absolutely nothing to do with how much you put into that unified memory. The only way to get more "stuff in" is by using better compression which only depends on the operating system (and mac os has been doing for quite a while now). The moment your RAM is full it needs to be swapped which is always much slower (200 or 400 gb/s vs up to ... because ssd manufacturers only use burst and not real rates 7.4gb/s ... on average more like 1gb/s on random access and not linear burst rates). If swapping performance is good enough for what you are doing even though you don't have enough RAM in the machine, then great, you can get away with less. But what you are trying to say here that somehow you need less RAM now is simply not true. Actually, when you run applications which use a significant amount of video memory (e.g. video encoding like you mentioned) before you had normal RAM and GPU RAM, now both data needs to be in the unified RAM. The fact that data does not need to copy between normal RAM and GPU RAM in certain instances does not play into how much ram you need in total without swapping to comparatively slow ssds. Ask any hardware engineer (if you don't trust my engineering skills) and they will confirm that.

@Karl_vulture
@Karl_vulture 2 жыл бұрын
I’m planning to go for 32gb but I’m still curious about 64gb, is this really practical overkill like people are saying? If I’m doing 3-4 camera multicams in 4K will 32gb be sufficient. If at some point I incorporated 6k or 8K would 32gb still be sufficient or should I consider 64gb? I plan to use this computer for a long time so future proofing is a major consideration.
@andreas7278
@andreas7278 2 жыл бұрын
@@Karl_vulture While this may sound lame, it really all depends on your real needs. Know yourself and your needs, do you earn your money doing these things and if not, is this a hobby you are committed to? If you are e.g. a law student writing your PhD thesis you can simply go for the base model and be fine for the next five years (nothing agains law, just trying to make the point clear). While some swapping will happen over time of usage, it won't slow you down to unbearable degrees and you can save yourself that money. If you are doing software engineering, video editing or something like that professionally and want to keep the machine more than just 1-2 years (those youtubers who recommend a machine which they say "is sufficient" always swap out their machines with the next release unless you haven't noticed that yet while most people out there keep theirs more like 4-5 years). I personally use 64gb in my main machine for software engineering and it's not a little bit overkill. When I have my typical environments all loaded up (i.e. 1-2 workspaces, all virtual environments, servers, db instances etc I need) including other basics (e.g. microsoft teams, thunderbird etc which unlike said in this youtube video you actually need to have open all day long if you want to be productive ... I have better things to do then opening and closing these apps all day long) my typical ram load will hover around 45-48gb ram. Whether swap will be used in addition to that depends on your personal setup (linux by default does not swap until ram is full, mac os and windows swap quite early but you can turn this off with small hacks ... however, if you do that and your ram ever runs full your machine instantly crashes obviously losing your current state of data, hence you can't simply change that via OS menus). All my colleagues use 64gb and none wants to go back to their old 32gb machines who lag around on these big workspaces. When comparing low and high amount of RAM on systems you should look at the right benchmarks. Good extensive testing is very time consuming, therefore most people on the internet just do the basic benchmarking stuff. E.g., while it is nice that people post benchmarks of 32gb vs 64gb ram rendering export times of videos, this is not where RAM is really needed that much. Sure, you get like a 10% boost if you have the extra RAM, but the difference is not that big for most people since the only delay you have is when new frames are being loaded (not the whole clip needs to be in RAM all the time for the export). However, what happens when you apply effects live on your timeline and want to see the results (which is how you want to edit to be efficient), whenever you need to get parts of the data from your SSD (even a 7.4GB burst highend SSD with their around 1GB/s random access rates are ridicously slow compared to 200 or 400gb/s memory interface) before your gpu or cpu can apply the effect everything will feel really slow. It's simple math and how computers work. Unified memory is not new, system on a chip designs have been around literally forever. The reason regular computers have separate RAM and GPU memory is due these reasons: 1. different manufacturers (e.g. nvidia vs intel) who create their components 2. customizability (setting up all kinds of different systems unlike a one-time fixed configuration you get here which can not be changed later) 3. GPU RAM is extremely fast compared to normal RAM for CPU (e.g. a regular nvidia rtx 3080 has more than 800gb/s while even high-end quad-channel desktop systems only achieve above 100gb/s, most dual channel regular systems are way below that). That ridiculously fast GPU memory is also extremely expensive, hence GPUs don't have that much RAM. This Apple design is a middle ground, way faster than normal RAM but much slower than regular GPU ram of discrete GPUS. However, your memory needs are normal CPU RAM + GPU RAM, in a regular computer you would maybe right now run 32gb + 8/10gb on your video card (for a regular setup). That stuff does not automatically fit into 16gb with some magic. That's not how operating systems and memory management work at all. I only do video editing as a hobby, I use 8k footage and in my opinion 64gb is needed for fluent editing (i.e. without proxies). However, I am quite confident that you can make it work with sufficiently small proxies and when you don't go overboard with special effects. But it kinda seems that Adobe Premiere and DaVinci Resolve use whatever RAM you throw at it. I don't see that was a waste at all. If you don't go over a regular H.264, H.265 or ProRes RAW 10bit 4:2:2 with normal proxies and are pretty sure you want do that in the future, you should be pretty fine with 32gb (even though it's unified). I have tried editing on a 16gb machine and it swaps quite heavily, unless you use really small proxies you are fighting heavy lags all around. Still with proxies you will find micro-jitters once you apply any effects. If you only occasionally do it and make sure you really free up ram by closing everything else before that can definitely work, but I don't see how you are going to do sufficient work as a professional for 4-5 years to come if you actually want to earn money with it. All these constant lags and lost time will never make up for that price difference. I am sure Max can make a simple footage like the Canon R5 10bit 4:2:2 with heavy compression (that actually decides how much RAM you need), proxies and all other apps closed work with 16gb without any lags in the timeline for regular simple post processing stuff. But I don't see him doing the same having other apps open (like a realistic working setup for many people) or if you have to do more than that. I am also convinced that he won't be using a 16gb machine in the years to come, actually he ordered a 32gb setup for himself (cause that fits his needs for regular 4k footage editing while not having too much other stuff running at the same time) and as youtuber with a tech channel he will swap his setup anyways a couple of times in the time while you own your own machine. He kinda needs to swap and show off the new releases to keep his channel going while you lose quite some money if you were to sell and buy a new version every time a refresh comes out. Most people watching this video don't do heavy stuff like video editing (probably have never even tried it), don't earn their money with any of these performance hungry things, and just want a nice device with a great display, battery life etc which feels fast. These people should probably get something like a base model with 1TB SSD for their next five years. I don't see how you will be satisfied with a 16gb setup for the next years (since it's non upgradable) if you however do real software engineering, deep learning, physics simulations, 3d modeling, video editing or something of that sorts. Depending on your needs it's going to be either 32 or 64gb ram. If you need best bang for your buck you should get yourself a nice tower pc instead of a notebook anyways. But if you need that performance in a mobile setup or only want one machine for some reason (i.e. you can't do simple stuff like managing your mails on the go and your heavy duty work from home) well then you should actually go for a more expensive option. Other competitors on the market are not cheaper if you are looking for that kind of feature set. That's just the way it is. But if you really earn your money with it, it actually makes up a very small investment compared to other licences and equipment you need over these years. I feel like most people who are completely lost whether they need such an expensive option don't do this kind of work and definitely don't earn their money with it. Hence, they fancy owning it but know that it's more about bragging rights and they should just go for a base option and save their money for other nice things in life. Regarding 4k multicam and possibly higher res in the future: I don't use multicam, with proxies are probably fine for now but it will lag if you go for high res stuff in the future. If that's really what you do and this is your main machine, I would actually go for 64gb in your case (which luckily is the same upgrade price as from 16 to 32gb and not twice as much).

@@Karl_vulture I had the same idea to stretch the life out as long as possible like I've done with my Late 2013 MBP. But I figured, in 3-4 years when the laptops are way more powerful, I'll want to upgrade to take advantage of faster CPU's, etc. Rather than pay $4000+ today, I'm going to pay $2900, go with the M1 Pro 14" 32GB. @@albyx Lol. binning doesn't work that way.....the faulty cores come from all fabs, in this case, TSMCs manufacturing process. It just means that a piece of dirt/lint landed on one or two of the cores, so they disabled them in the factory to still sell them and increase their yield per wafer. It doesn't increase the chance of damage to other cores at all. You've already probably used binned chips before......Intel Core i5's are usually binned down i7's, same with AMD ryzen chips, their 6 core 3600x/5600x use a binned 6 core chiplet vs the 5600x/5800x using a full 8 core chiplet.....Nvidia GTX 970/1070 etc were binned 980/1080 chips.....Even the base M1 has a 7 Core GPU.......AMD, Intel, Nvidia all bin till this day. Binning is standard in the industry. Otherwise they would be throwing away a lot of useful chips just because of a few damaged cores.......Especially in this chip shortage, binning is needed even more.......binned chips aren't faulty in some serious way....and don't have a high chance of failure. It'll be just fine. I think the best option for most people for the Macbook pros, both 14/16 are the base models with 16gb of memory and 1tb of storage. If you multi-task a lot or do a lot pro level work beyond basic productivity, or need to game/emulate windows, then 24 core M1 max with 32GB of memory and 1 or 2tb of storage. Most people don't need the 32 Core max, Unless you are a die hard gamer, heavy 3d graphics pro etc. Most people don't need 64GB Memory, unless you are working with gigantic files and using multiple heavy pro apps at the same time, or running a lot of vms. Most people don't need 4/8tb of storage, unless you are working with gigantic pro-res/raw files/projects and hate carrying around an external ssd. For me, as a gamer, light pro, Macbook Pro 16, M1 Max 32 Core GPU, 32GB Memory, 2TB Storage. Perfect.

Just got some insights from someone else about this question. Apparently it is all about how much tasks and file size you plan to run in the foreground and background at the same time. In which case, most users who just uses their computer to run a couple of programs at once would get amazing speeds even with basic to mid level setup. Save to say I think getting just the M1 Pro with a bit more RAM would do just fine help future proof the computer before the next upgrade.

I've been waiting for two years for this. I considered making the switch from Windows to Mac for the first time when the 16" came out in 2019; however, I didn't like the ports setup and I knew silicon Macs were coming. I have a Microsoft Surface Pro 6, so I decided to continue using it and save up in meantime. My usage and life circumstances were also very different back then. I'm so excited for the new 14" & 16" MBPs. I don't like the notch because it's so wide for it not include Face ID. I love Windows Hello on the Surface Pro. I've also only had touchscreen laptops for over 15 years, so I wish the MBPs had it. But I work with a desktop computer 40 hours a week and it doesn't have a touchscreen - I'm sure I'd get used to the MBP, too. I've decided to go back to school for computer science with an emphasis on human factors engineering. I want to help make technology more accessible for people who have disabilities, who are minorities, if English isn't their first language, or if tech doesn't come naturally to them. For example, if Alexa has trouble understanding someone with a stutter. I would like to work in research, design, and AI/machine learning. I will get my masters, but it will take me much longer because I'll be going part-time. I'm also a writer, gamer, and plan to start a KZfaq channel. I'm trying to decide between the 14" & 16" along with the processor. I love the larger 16" screen and trackpad along with better battery life, but it is HEAVY. The Surface Pro is 2.4lbs with the keyboard, which is about half the size of the 16". The 14" is a nice middle ground between the two, but it has much lower battery life. Do you think I should get 32GB ram to future proof or that 16GB would be fine? I can't wait for your upcoming reviews and comparisons. I'm interested in seeing what the battery life is for the M1 Pro vs M1 Max.

Accessibility in the computer industry often has half-hearted focus, so its nice to see someone wanting to focus on that. The notch isn't really a notch. Its extra screen added to the top for the OS menubar, to help save screen space. The drawback of that is the full 16 : 10 screen will black out the top extra screen by the notch for full screen and then it looks like just a big bezel on the top... but the 'notch' doesn't get down into the main content like it does on phones. Developers can also use that area if they want for things. Its sort of like how the touchbar used to be on the keyboard, its a bit of extra screen for a special area. I love small, light and portable as much as possible, so I went with a 14" one myself. 16 or 32 is up to you. If you are just going to school for Comp Sci, any config is more than what you'll need. I find it funny people are so spoiled with battery life. I recall the times when a laptop came out that really could run for 3 whole hours, and people thought that was so great and they could get all their work done without finding a power outlet... its slowly increased from there, and people complain today about 12 to 17 hours being low 🤣. If you are barely using your machine more than what you could do on an iPad, I think the battery life will hold up well because it can do almost everything on the efficiency cores.
@carstenpxi
@carstenpxi 2 жыл бұрын
Great review, but you missed commenting on the significant impact on battery life when you go to the MAX SOC. If you carefully study the performance graphs, you can see that the MAX had close to 60 watts max consumption, vs. about 30 watts for the PRO. This means that the MAX under full load, can run the battery down in one hour on the 14 inch, and 1.5 hours on the 16. Now in principle, this is not bad, assuming it gets the work done in half the time. Even more important, looking at the other end of the performance graphs (assuming that that end point is idle power) , you will see that the MAX also has about 50% greater idle power, about 12 W vs. 8 watts for the GPU plots while the CPU plots, both show 5 Watts. I can't figure out how this is tested? Do the GPU curves include the CPU? The Video Playback numbers are tested with the 14 inch is using the most binned part of the PRO while the 16 inch is using the regular PRO. Not numbers are shown for the MAX. For the 16 inch PRO we may get a hint at the "Idle power", with up to 21 hours of video playback. Here, I would guess only the Efficiency cores are working, only 1 graphics core active, and the de-coding running in the dedicated hardware. This then would imply a 5 Watt total power consumption which matches the 100 Wh divided by 21 hours. (However this is inconsistent with the 8 W GPU minimum based on the performance power curves.) The fact that this test does not include the MAX Version, implies that it has a significantly higher Idle power consumption, looking at Apples own performance graph it goes from 12 Watts to about 60 Watts. So assuming CPU and GPU in the MAX are doing close to nothing while playing Video, this 12 Watt "idle" power for the MAX would give 8 hours video watching (using the Apple TV App which is most likely more highly optimized than KZfaq etc.). Obviously, the MAX with such a huge chip and record breaking transistor count, must still be considered extremely impressive. But it also makes a compelling case, that you only want the 16 inch screen for the screen size, you should stick with the PRO chip which will give you much better battery life than the MAX since the Pro can throttle down to a lower Idle current. At the high performance end the PRO uses 30 W and the MAX 60 Watts. This means that with "the pedal to the metal" in the 14 inch PRO the battery will be depleted in 70/30 hours, i.e. 2 hr and 20 minutes and in the 14 inch MAX in 70/60, i.e. 1 hr and 10 minutes. For the 16 inch, with the PRO the battery will run down in 100/30, i.e. 3 hours and 20 minutes, and with the 16 inch MAX, 100/60 i.e. 1 hour and 40 minutes. So to compete with the PRO on battery life, the MAX would have to have twice as high performance hence using the same amount of energy. The caveat in all of this, is that these simple curves do not reflect all the nuances of the very sophisticated dynamic power management going on in the chips, and also that the extensive benchmarking in different permutations will give a more realistic picture, and also if there is throttling most likely with the fully loaded MAX in the 14 inch. So my tentative personal conclusion is to buy the 16" for the big screen with a PRO chip with has slightly higher single core score, and 70% higher multi-core performance than my existing M1 and double graphics performance. And that also shows the Max Yuryev's recommendation for the non-power user also gives the best battery life. I look forward toward your benchmarks of your 8 different models!

It quite obvious, that with the newly revealed High Performance mode for the 16 inch MAX, that the fans will need to work hard, and somewhat noisy to get rid of the 60 plus Watts in such a relatively thin package.

Nice glad I chose the base 16”. With the savings I got 4TB storage to eliminate external drive & bought Final Cut Pro! Hopefully I’ll get the hang of it quick coming from iMovie.

Final Cut shouldnt be too hard to use if you came from iMovie. They are similar only that FCP has more stuff to offer.

The smartest configuration and best bang for the buck was called (grant it prior to testing) the 16” model with the 24 core/32 RAM configuration (double the speed, twice the external monitors, better fans, runs cooler and more).

Thank you for the honest opinion, seriously debating to get the M1 max or not, very good point regarding it is not a big price difference if I get 32GB ram with the M1 pro.

It happened to me more than one time that I ran out of RAM. Easily. In a recent film production project I had memory usage of around 124GB. So idk, saying that you don’t needing more than 32GB is probably not fitting here. But I understand that I’m an edge case and that most people don’t really need that kind of RAM. For anyone asking: I got the 16” M1 Max with 64GB and 1TB SSD FYI I use it mostly for color grading. Mostly using Arri Raw and Blackmagic Raw. Sometimes Red Raw but rarely. I use DaVinci Resolve Studio as my main NLE

Im looking to get one of these and edit 4k video on premiere Pro. I don't overly stack footage (mayb 3-6 layers max) and no colour grading. Do you think the 16gb of ram on the 16 inch M1 pro model will be sufficient? Thanks

32GB. Adobe minimum requirements are 32GB for video. You can find that in their official website, and keep in mind that they also require a video card which usually have 8, 12 and 16GB of memory. Combine the memory and video memory it will have more than 32. Unified memory is faster and yes the base model handles fine but they all have limits and the memory limits them. The 64GB still crashes in Premiere with only a few layers of 4k 120fps high res and 8k. So don't over glorify these MacBooks. I do have the 64GB and it does crash under heavy load. ALL machines crash, and ALL have limits. There is no such thing as an overkill when it comes to video, files grow exponentially it is crazy. Also keep in mind that with the 16GB you wi be limited in experimentation and future files if you upgrade your gear later on. Unless you're planning to not upgrade your cameras and work with the same footage for longer than what you plan to have the computer. If you plan to upgrade buy what will handle what you're going to upgrade to in the future. Computers are expenses, yes expenses, unless you buy them strategically so they become investments. Buying technology too tight will make you spend more money later. I have hated myself in the past for buying things and needing to upgrade them sooner than later because I have been cheap and tried to save 600, 800 but then spent 3500 to upgrade what I shouldn't have to if I have been more flexible. ONLY buy the 16GB if you edit off of cellphone footage and photos from cellphones, low res files from entry level cameras like Canon RP, Sony A73, A6 line up, Canon Rebel, Fuji Xt's... if you use Sony A7S3, Canon R5 and above like FX3, FX6 C300, C500, RED, ARRI def get the 32 at least of you barely do any edits to your vids. And if youre getting the 32GB it would be wise to just get the Max 24GPU instead of just the pro, or 32 core if you just might as well spend more jist because you are already going expensive.
