As part of the 386th Anniversary celebrations of the National Guard's "First Muster" in Salem, Massachusetts, the 101st Field Artillery Regiment (Boston Light Artillery) gave a 105mm M101A1 Howitzer Salute on the Salem Common (4/22/23).
In 1636, the colonial government of Massachusetts ordered a formal organization of the colony's militia into the North, South & East Regiments. The East Regiment held their first muster on the Salem Common that year, marking the birth of the modern US National Guard. In 2013, President Barack Obama officially recognized Salem as the Birthplace of the National Guard.
The 101st Field Artillery Regiment, which gave the salute, is the oldest field artillery regiment in the entire US Army, tracing its roots to the South Regiment of that first Massachusetts colonial militia.
