M1028A2 CUCV Project: - Demo! Front-Wheel Drive-Only w/ ORD Twin Shifters & Modified Rails

I just got my truck back from the shop after replacing both the TH400 transmission (old one cracked) and NP205 transfer case (old shift rails did not work properly). I also had the shift rails modified in the new NP205 transfer case to give me a front wheel drive-only capability utilizing the ORD twin shift kit. Its a super cool feature, especially if you break a rear shaft or U-Joint. You can just remove the rear shaft and rescue yourself in front wheel drive. This feature is only available if the rails are modified. ORD sells the kits so you don't need to modify the rails yourself. It will require that you partially take apart the transfer case and put in the modified rails. This video demonstrates the front wheel drive capability.

This is awesome you can also make really short turns using dig or dig the front in on high and leave the rear low to push!

Can you leave the hubs in the lock position and just leave them there and use 2wd and just put the front in neutral so that way you don't have to lock and unlock manually every time you want 4wd?

I have the NP203 and have learned its not a good idea to shift the Transfer case from or thru neutral without the transmission in park. Do you still get the big "clunk" when putting the case into front low with the transmission in PARK?

Thx. Yes. I now have a rear only low. With the modified shift rails, I can do front wheel drive only as well (high or low)

@@VermontPrepper You can have rear only low without the mod. If a driveline gets damaged take it out. I know you have a slip in , but changing the tail shaft so you don't have to tape up the hole would be cheaper. The linkage on your old unit has plastic bushings that wear out. Put in new ones, your range will come right back.

@@VermontPrepper If your drive line gets damaged and needs to be removed so you can run out with the front, and you have a slip in rear, when you pull it out you have a hole where the drive line fit into the TC. You will lose ATF if you don't tape it up. Sometimes you can leave it in and tie up the driveline. Your solution with the twin stick TC is trick but that kind of damage isn't common and the new TC has got to be expensive. It would be informative to know what your mods cost. Do you have to be careful that you don't get one end in HI and the other in low? I would honestly sell the M105 trailer. It is a 1.5 ton trailer and will make your stopping distance too long even when empty without trailer brakes. They are air/hydraulic and can't be made to work with a CUCV. Your M1028 will be a dog trying to pull it, and dangerous trying to stop it or enen slow down.Take the M101a2 from your M1009 it is too heavy for it anyway, and get a M416 for the M1009. Get a G250 shelter for your M1028 and whatever you intended to haul in the truck put in the M101a2 trailer and whatever you needed locked up in the M105, lock that up in your shelter. You are then using your M1028a2 shelter carrier for it's intended purpose, but the shelter was meant to house radios. They can be made into a nice little camper if your so inclined.
