I didn't have the opportunity to do a full video with the folks who own this M18 Hellcat, but I did get some footage of it firing. Enjoy!

My all time favorite military vehicle. They put the biggest gun they could on what was basically a hot rod. Simple concept, but with the right tactics, this little tank lived up to its name.

76 mm was a development where they took the barrel of the 3" gun used on the M10 (among others) and mated it with the receiver of the 75mm gun used on the Sherman. The 75mm AP round had a velocity of about 2000 fpm. The 76 mm AP round had a velocity of about 2600 fpm. The 76 mm could also fire the HVAP round which had a tungsten core surrounded by aluminum and weighted 8 lbs vs almost 15 lbs for the standard round. This round had a velocity of about 3400 fpm and the tungsten core could penetrate the frontal armor of a Panther or Tiger. The HVAP round was in short supply and mostly allocated to tank destroyers like the Hellcat. Sherman 76mm tanks were lucky to get two of them.

Yes sir ! That is 76 mm alright ! The kick on that gun launch the round out with authority . I heard one gunner in scv German in the first battle against German Panzzers in North Africa said they fired there 75 medium velocity guns and had hurled them up like a football to impact with little damage to Panzers . While German high velocity 75 guns could fire point black with little trajectory and knock the Sherman's out and they won the first armor encounter of the war .

I thought the hellcat had a 76 mm m1 cannon?
@yamansshmeat399
@yamansshmeat399 8 жыл бұрын
It's actually a 76.2mm right? Because no hellcat had a 75mm only tanks back then with a 75mm where light takes with a longer barrel for the 75mm or the M4A1,M4A2, and the M4A3E2. Until later in the war they made an M4A1 (W) 76.2mm, W standing for wet ammo storage. Which was made because the M4A1 used a gas engine. So it was highly flammable. So to prevent fire from getting to the ammo they surrounded ammo with a tub full of Water with anti freeze and other chemicals to stop it from exploding. Until the M4A2 (W) 76.2mm with a Dessel engine. Which was still pretty bad until the M4A3E8 (W) 76.2mm came. It had a different engine. I forgot the engine type.
@solus48
@solus48 8 жыл бұрын
+Just a guy_That loves Guns_and fishing About the engine, Most fires in tanks during WW2 was from ammunition catching fire. This usually happened from hot fragments hitting the ammo and setting it off. US tanks were no more prone to engine fires from getting hit than German tanks which used gasoline engines as well. It was mainly poor securing of ammunition, and overloading the tank with unsecured ammunition, in North Africa that led to the "Flaming Sherman" myth. After these problems were corrected and wet ammunition racks were installed the Sherman had the lowest occurrence of fires per hit out of any tank in WW2. You are right about the gun though, all Hellcats were equipped with the 76mm, but the only versions of the Sherman that were upgunned all used the same 76mm. The major difference was that Hellcat platoons had access to more rounds of HVAP making their 76mm capable of taking out any German tank fielded.

At the start, it says it's a 75mm gun. It's a 76mm M1A2 gun. There is a big difference btw, for all of you saying "Oh it's 1mm off." For example, the 76mm was a much more high velocity which meant it's HE (High Explosive) shells had less power. Which meant the tank had to use it's machine guns or in this case on a Hellcat, its 50 cal. HMG against infantry. Also, because of the muzzle break it kicked up more dust. Which meant it could be easier to spot the tank and it was hard for the gunner to see the fall of shot so he could adjust his aim.

Though long-obsolete, WWII-era tank destroyers - M10s, M18s, M36s - were still in use in the Balkans Civil War of the 1990s, and also have been seen in various conflicts in Africa. If you think about it, "obsolete" is a relative term. Sure, an M18 TD is "obsolete" next to an up-to-date 21st century tank or other piece of military hardware, but if it is the only armored vehicle in the fight, it can still cause some major damage before someone with an RPG knocks it out or whatever.... guess the point I'm making is that I wouldn't want to be on the receiving end of one of those high-velocity 76mm rounds - obsolete or not!

+Richardsen the two killed in the tank destroyer accident were friends of mine, an other friend was there watching the firing demonstration and was one of the first to reach the tank and see inside. Austin was killed instantly, and Steve died minutes later... From his account the breach ring shattered. and the detail of the injuries was more than i'd like to know. but I can tell you Austins funeral was beautiful. by requested from his parents all reenactors were in their WW2 dress uniforms and current military in theirs. it was unfortunate for the family that Austins grandfather died a few days after Austin.

Why is a fireball coming out of the top of the turret when it fires 0:38? Seems sort of detrimental to the folks inside the tank, though they don't seem to be bothered.
