About a year ago I saw a S&W 1917 at a local pawn shop for $350. I went home to check out some serial numbers and history and drove back. You know the end of this story. It was already sold.

Beautiful! Guns aren’t made like they used to be that’s for sure!

I have a Brazilian Contract S&W 45acp that is in very good, shootable condition. I am not crazy about using moon clips, but a man has gotta do what a man has gotta do. After I bought 2 Argentine made 1911s which I enjoy shooting, I figured I might as well get the Brazilian Smith and use the same ammo. It also shoots well.

The Smith has been refinished, and the polishing has almost obscured several of the stampings as well as rounded many edges. It has British proof marks which have been almost polished away.

Moonclips are probably the fastest speedloaders available!

Nice pair! Like all of us I imagine that you’ve sold a gun that you wish that you still had. I had a nice S&W 1917 once and sold it. That, and a nice S&W 53 with a matching .22 cylinder, all 6 inserts and the original box both haunt me to this day. I would add a H&K P7M8 to the list but I recently bought one to replace the one that I sold back in the 1980s. I paid one hell of a lot more for it, but I have it now.

Beautiful revolver's! Smith and Ruger still make 45acp DA/SA revolver's. The Ruger has to use moon clips be cause it also shoot's 45 Colt.

Those additional proof marks indicating "tons" makes this pistol a return from England as a "Lend-Lease" revolver. The British proofed their weapons not with a PSI rating, but "tonnes" of pressure. There may be additional proof marks on the inside of the cylinder near one or all of the charge hole chambers. I have one of the parkerized Brazilian revolvers with NO additional markings other than the Brazilian crest on the right side, with is nearly faded away. The Colt marking is known as the "Rampant Stallion."

The Smith is a lend/lease gun. Those are English proof marks. It looks like it’s been refinished at some point. The barrel pin is a roll pin. I’m not sure that’s factory.

Both revolvers are great. Colt seems a bit challenging for most people because of it grip shape more than anything else. If you have or buy a Colt 1917 it good to understand something about the gun that is seldon talked about. This revolver was designed for mounted shooters. The army at this time taught you to shoot one handed and in single action. Colt design the New Service to be a single action revolver that can be shot double action. The army still used some Single Action armies and didn't want troops confused. The S&W 1917 was a sportsman's revolver from the gate. Smith had just perfected their action a few years before and put it into a premium double action revolver, the Triple lock. All Smith 1917 are built on frames that with out the war would have been Triple locks Anyways I've consider the Smith to be a double action revolver you can shoot single action. Just the opposite of Colt. Both revolvers are fine revolvers and worth having. One suggestion to those who own one of these revolvers. If you shoot them to think about replacing the springs. They don't cost much and will put that new gun snap back in them. Also this is the very first step in doing and action job to lighten trigger pull. I've owned both for over fifty years shoot them regularly and enjoy them alot. The both shoot best with hardball ammo, and ammo cost aren't bad. And you will have a formidable weapon

Nice revolvers!!!! I'd like to see more surplus arms up for sale to the public. Instead of destroyed or left for the enemy to have .

I have the Smith & Wesson with a serial number dated April 1918. It has a very nice set of Smith checkerd grips and does not have US Property stamped on it anywhere. I have always been a little confused that this 1917 was made seven months before the war ended but no US Property stamp. It has the lanyard and is stamped US Model 1917 on the butt. Any info on why it might be like this is appreciated.

Awesome showing of a couple of great firearms. Do you have any of the original moon clips?

Son revólveres impresionantes, si los vuelven a fabricar sería un éxito. Clásicos y poderosos 45 acp y con clip se recarga muy rápido. Lo prefiero a un 357 moderno. 👍👍👍👍🇦🇷🇦🇷🇦🇷🇦🇷🇦🇷
