Just bumped up to an 15” M3 MBA from an M1, I got $555 USD trade in value and bought the M3 certified refurbished. I’m a video editor and I have a Studio M1 Ultra and really wanted something light and easy for editing on the couch where I can get away with it and all my personal stuff. I absolutely could have gone for a MBP for the price but I kept coming back to that lightweight MBA design. Hasn’t failed me so far and the extra screen feels super luxurious.

I have the M2 Macbook Air with 8Gb of RAM, which is too low and slow. I myself had a bit of money to splurge so I got the base m3 air (in midnight!) for basic workloads and fun when on the go, and the m3 pro mbp (in silver -- the color contrast w the keyboard is gorgeous) for gaming and generally for heavier workloads beyond text documents and a few tabs open. An expensive set up yes but one that mirrors my prevjous setup which was the same thing but PC, and it works very well for me. The air wowed me with how thin it was even though I expected the 15 inch to be bulky, and I just love it. If I had less to spend, I'd recommend the 15 inch air with the full ram upgrades and whatever storage you need -- it's come very far since my original 11 inch air back in the early 2010s 😅

I was going to buy a 15-in M3 MacBook Air 512/16 in March but seven weeks in three hospitals put a stop to that plan. Once back home I bought one online as I still wasn't very mobile. I specified the 15-in M3 MacBook Air with the 70W charger, which meant it was technically a build-to-order combination. So rather than shipping the day after purchase, I had to wait 8 or 9 days. It's a terrific computer, does all I need (and is capable of much more). It replaced a base model M1 MacBook Air which had been purchased in 2021 from Apple Refurbished stock. It's a shame the Midnight finish is such a fingerprint magnet as that's the colour I chose.

24gb and 1 tb on an air???? Why not get a 14” pro. A lot more power
@satysin630Ай бұрын
@@davidcooper574 I did seriously think about the 14" Pro but when I did my backpack test I knew right away the Air was the way I wanted to go. It is just so thin and light you don't even notice it whereas the 14" Pro is noticebly thicker and heavier and just chunkier overall which didn't feel much different to my 16" MBP if I am honest. My goal was the lightest, least noticable laptop running macOS I could get and the Air was the best solution for that. Expensive for sure but I am a freelance software developer and these are all business purchases which make them tax deductable for me, so how much they cost isn't of any real concern. That's why I decided to up the RAM and storage to more than I know I need as in reality it doesn't cost me any more once I file my tax returns and it gives me a machine that will hopefully peform better and last longer. As for the power difference between the Air and Pro, you're right it is there but only really for very heavy workloads using many cores, this isn't what I use the Air for. I have my 16" MBP for heavy tasks and if I need that much power on the go I will take the 16" instead. For 99% of the on the go work it is just demoing things to clients and doing small, realtime changes not running on device LLMs or 5 virtual machines so the Air is more than powerful enough that I don't notice any different in terms of actual performance.

I always appreciate your videos but on this one I really have to make a serious note - 8GB RAM for 'general computing' is not enough at all. I am on an 8GB M1 MBA with 256GB SSD and the amount of times this laptop has overheated and I had to restart it is instane. And mind you - general computing does include LOADS of tabs constantly open to do my daily work, a second browser open for my personal side gig, Zoom calls and a Screen Mirroring to my iPad for a 2nd screen. So no - the base model should be completely iradicated as its not worth it at all. P.S. - That little "Activity Monitor" trick was great! I just checked my usage and it's constantly in the yellow ;) Not sure what you 'should' be doing on the base model to be in the green all the time.. Netflix and chill only? :D Cheers for a great video as always :) Peace!
@andyH_EnglandАй бұрын
Yes, the rule of common sense does apply. When I bought my M1, I bought the M1 MB Pro 13 as it has a fan for the more intensive workflows. The Air has no active cooling, so your workload means you bought the wrong device. You should have bought one with a fan and 16GB of RAM. Buy a four-year-old Intel Windows machine, with 8GB and turn the fan on and see how well that copes with your usage. It would be miles worse!

I would totally agree, I bought one of these M3 - 13" also around 3 months ago and it's so powerful and light and convenient to use, I love it. The battery life is amazing, the screen is bright and lovely, I don't envy the 14" mini led screen. The only downside is that I should have gone for the space grey version as the blue, though utterly lovely, shows every little spec of dust and fingerprint. I'm going to get a large 32" screen to connect it to when home soon, probably the BenQ. It's the combination of lightness and power and quality screen that I really love, the Pro's are brill but too heavy for me to use conveniently.

12:08 .. i would argue.. no.. it's not the point of having one.. not at all. i would actually say that most ppl who have those types of cars get no where NEAR max performance... and certainly no where near sustained max performance unless they're driving illegally a lot. most ppl who get these types of cars actually drive them casually and probably not very often. we had a porsche 911 carrera and we NEVER pushed it to max performance.. literally drove it casually as a normal car.

I think the point is buying something like that and never pushing it is incredibly dumb in both contexts. Even if it’s more socially acceptable with cars. It’s still dumb

can't buy and pickup in store anything but the base model - if you want an upgraded version you have to schedule to sit your ass at home waiting for delivery - i guess only people that actually don;t have a job are eligible to upgrade RAM and SSD

I am a not tech senior with an iPad Air2. It’s great but I want to keep up to speed and not get slower, get more creative, and keep up my spreadsheets. Tried my 93yr old dad’s Lenovo…no thank you!!! TWO QUESTIONS….1. headphone jack? No way am I scrambling my brain with Bluetooth. My Dr. Amen’s SPEC scan would already look a bit Swiss cheesy! 2. No fan?….hmmmm….will it like The Bahamas? I can’t overwork myself so I doubt I’d overwork a laptop hehe.

Saying 13 is the same as 15 is absurd. Its easier to split screen with 15.
