M9 RFW ON WEST HEMPSTEAD BRANCH WITH THE FLYING YANKEE. 7/12/24

We take a ride on the shortest branch on the LIRR from West Hempstead to Valley Stream before rain halted further shooting. you will see all of the railroad stations and the railroad crossings that are accessed. This branch recently had a big service improvement as of February 2023 with pretty much hourly service on the line in each direction. This branch was actually a much longer branch years ago as it crossed Nassau County from Valley Stream to Oyster Bay.

Awesome!!! I had an M9 out of Ronkonkoma going to the Mets game a few weeks ago the train was extra crowded with a WWE event going on at MSG

4 Car platforms, Great memories, remember at W. Hempstead the old Wetson's Hamburgers, Hempstead Bowling Alley, S. Klein department store as well as E.J.Korvettes, and the big A&S dept. store in downtown Hempstead.

I rode that line years ago with MP-54 cars. It amazed me that the live third rail came so close to the crossings where people, kids and dogs walked. And not even a warning sign !! Imagine a dog taking a pee on it or a kid on a bike falling over it.

The track is straight as an arrow and it looks like you barely break 20mph at the fastest sections. Why so slow?!

Well, the speed limit is not that high to begin with and I zoom the camera out which makes it look slower than it is. I do that so I can minimize viewing as much of the car interior as possible. We want to see the railroad not the interior decorations.

I think it’s just that it’s zoomed in, the top speed is 65 mph and in some sections 45mph according to Wikipedia, they probably don’t travel that fast due to how close the stations are.

I wonder why M7-9s do not shut off the third rail like M1-3s did when they were ran a certain way on this branch.

They are equipped with special train lining that doesn’t cause the lights to go out at the gap switches providing some cars are on the third rail

No wonder there is little ridership on this line. I can't imagine that the train would not stop at Valley Stream as it is a big retail and business area. Why not use two bilevels and have it run as a shuttle back and forth between VS and WH? seems like a better use of the equipment.

It was all part of the Long Island Railroad Eastside access service improvement
