Notes on how to play: KZfaq has a function to slow down videos. It’s great because it maintains the pitch of the original video so you can play along in the same tuning as me.
I’m playing the entire song the way Peter played while he was in the quintessential Mac lineup (no offense to all the other dudes that played with Mac that were not named Pierce or Joe). It is also the same way some guy at ACL in 2014 played it except the solo is way better in this video. Also I didn’t play with a capo here. Mac’s old guitar was always out of tune when they played live in that era and the album recording is pitch shifted on a tape machine so who even knows what key you should play it in.
The solo is based around the minor pentatonic scale. It is played in the position that most people learn first. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, google minor pentatonic scale and look for the boxiest looking position. The solo follows one pattern of runs down the pentatonic scale. This pattern is repeated just one note shifted down the scale each time. Hopefully you pick up what I’m talking about if you watch the video, especially slowed down. This is a useful idea to learn in general as you pick up songs and start writing your own stuff.
That’s it. That’s all I got. Go home!
