those 5400 rpm drives are a nightmare. SSD and 16gb ram and it will be golden.

Brilliant M8! I had fun w/ my 2012 i7 2.6 quad. I had that same 1st experience w/ the WiFi mesh grill. It's got to slot in just the right way. Bing bang done!

The difficulty re-installation of the antenna part is because of the metal "teeth" on the mesh on the rounded part being bent out of shape. The lip of the housing have to go between the antenna and "teeth". Everyone, please don't smash your Mac Minis out of frustration.

Updated it to IOS Ventura with boot installer and it’s very very usable

Regarding installation the OS, it is possible (and arguably preferable) to download, from the Apple website, the latest version that is appropriate for the Mac, create a bootable USB stick and then install that way, bypassing the need to go through several OS installs. I did this yesterday with my 'new' Mac Mini Late 2012.

I just went through this installing a SSD in my new to me 2012. I tried to install Catalina from Time Machine backup but it would not take. However, High Sierra would restore. Then installed Catalina from Apple website. However, the install image was not the latest version so had to install updates which took just as much time as the original install. This took three times longer than it should have but it was worth it.

It would be a good idea to enable trim otherwise the SSD will slow down considerably in the short time.

Top speed is not the goal with i5. With only 4GB, there will be a lot of paging to the SSD. Better to disable TRIM to prolong SSD life.

Turn the Mac mini right Side up so the SSD tilts further down towards the antenna plate to get the screws in.

Thanks! They are ideal as a media player in the living room that was how I used mine.... you can use and Apple TV remote on them, which helps. They’re pretty cheap to get hold of too. Older models can’t do 4K though....

@@youcefbelaid7145 stick to 2013 or older... 2014 and newer you can’t upgrade the ram...... there are some i7’s knocking around. They just never had anything in the way of a decent graphics chip. I live my Apple TV!!

I realize this is an older video but I hope you see this comment. It is a VERY helpful guide and I plan to use it to do the same to my late 2012 Mini. Question: is it possible to obtain an extra set of all the screws because I can honestly see myself having trouble due to their small size (as you noted). Any suggestions on what type they are. I'm hoping it's not a style that Apple designed specifically for their machines and therefore not easy to find. Thank you!

Hey. As long as you're using the right Torx screwdriver you should be fine. Just take your time and place the screws somewhere safe and take note of where they go.... Let us know how you get on!

I put 16 GB RAM in mine which helped speed it up a lot. But the HD is still what it is, so I’m not going into the machine to install bcuz I won’t put it back right. So next, I’m a try an external SSD and see if that will help until I can get a new mac mini.

$30 SSD will transform your Mini. Mine boots to login screen in about 20 seconds which is a full minute less than before.

Great to reuse this old tech. And I am exploring the idea of installing ChromeOS Flex on my wife's old Mac mini (late 2012). Because Apple have now ceased support/upgrades for the current OS. Any thoughts/comments?

My neighbour still uses this daily, and still runs the old OS, it makes no odds to him as he doesn’t need lateral software. My current experience of using open core isn’t great (but is limited).. the cost of a used 2018 Intel or even an M1 Mac mini is pretty good on the eBay/used market if you’re wanting continued support and modern software….?

@@peteb.8120 I couldn’t comment on Chrome at all, I’ve tried a Chromebook and wasn’t over let enamoured with it. All Apple OS’ are free…. I have an older iMac running Catalina, a Mac Pro running Mojave a Mac mini running Monterey and an MBP and Studio running Ventura (flex 🙄) and don’t have any any of them. I’ve never known security to be an issue, I’ve never known (not saying that it doesn’t happen), but I’ve never known or known of a Mac getting a virus etc…

Do you think the thermal paste should be replaced after all these years? I have a mac mini 2012 version and thought all I needed to do was just swap out the mechanical hard drive with a SSD and install the latest supported OS but was curious about the thermal paste.

it was Catalina via Mavericks Mkey. if your such an expert you sholdve been able to tell from the install screen that read Mavericks and the Catalina wallpaper.
