In this video, I go over my experience with the Mac Mini M1 16Gb after 90 plus days. I will discuss the good, the bad and the ugly and share my thoughts if this Mac Mini is still worth it in 2022.
The Mac Mini M1 is definitely not a slouch when it comes to daily computing and some video editing and photo editing from a beginner KZfaqr.
My case scenario, to be clear, is a working professional working from home with lots of zoom calls and presenting online with Microsoft Office.
My first 90 plus days, this has been my main computer for work projects, online presentations and have edited all my KZfaq videos since December 2021.
Enjoy the video and thank you for watching!

I just bought the Mac Mini 16GB with 1TB internal storage and a 2TB external SSD, replacing an older PC running Win7 for my voice over business. WOW. I can't believe the performance difference. Watching videos like yours only reaffirms my decision. Thanks for the video.

Just ordered a 16Gb/1TB to be a home desktop as I’ve been using my M1 Pro MBP in clamshell mode for the past few months! (Similar to your situation before buying the mini). Super excited to have this machine, I don’t think it’s necessary to wait for M2!

Hey Gianni Fiore! Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment, I really appreciate it! I 100% agree! I actually, wasn't overly impressed with the M2 in comparison to the M1. The M2 Pro and Max might be something to see, but like you I am still using the Mac Mini M1 and don't see myself jumping on a Mac mini M2 :)

I'm considering buying the 16gb 256gb mini as my first ever apple product... Having used Windows my whole life. My current laptop is a 10 years old Acer i7 2nd gen with busted keyboard and speaker. Using just the gut with external monitor and external mouse keyboard. Still evaluating what my next option. If I purchase the mini, I will be using it alongside the acer while learning a new OS. And, done subs to your channel

Hi Cg! Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment. I really appreciate it. That’s amazing you are trying something new and at the very least starting a new journey. It will take some time to adjust and learn a new OS, but like anything once you do it’s like riding a new bike. I will say depending on your needs the Mac mini will be delightfully surprising on performance. Let me know anytime if you have any requests that will help elevate your experience with your new Mac Mini!

I have the Mac Mini 256GB 8GB, it’s never the ram that has been a problem for me, it’s always have been the storage. If you are planning on using many apps, I highly suggest getting the 512GB version or higher. However, 16GB of ram I have used on a friends Mac Mini by playing Cities Skylines and editing and exporting in Premiere and I noticed a bigger difference in Cities Skylines but premiere I didn’t notice any difference. Overall, I love my computer and I recently bought an external ssd and have had no issues since.

Thanks Hardik!! That is awesome! I think what Apple has done with unified memory and the M1 chip for performance and efficiency, you get way more out of RAM and not the normal thoughts of "You need more" for what most people are using their computers for on a daily basis. Thanks Hardik!!

Thanks, Brad Trounson, for taking the time to leave a comment! 100%! My Samsung G9 is running at 120Hz, just some screen tearing which I think based on how it goes crazy on-screen makes me believe its the Samsung panel and the graphics on the M1. Honestly, as long as I position multiple windows running videos it goes away so I am used to it :)

First congratulations for the channel, your content is helping me. If you can clear me a doubt, I'd appreciate it... I'm not sure whether to buy a Mac Studio or a Mac mini with 16gb of RAM. My work routine is similar to yours, however I do 2 or 3 lives a week, at the moment I only broadcast to KZfaq using Ecamm Live, but I would like to simultaneously broadcast to Instagram using OBS. Does the Mac mini support 2 simultaneous streams? In addition to the transmission, I will be using Keynote slideshow, a DSLR Camera with capture card and a Stream Deck. Do you think the Mac mini would do it or suggest a Mac Studio?
@Elev8Project
@Elev8Project 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Bruno! Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment and question. I am glad to hear my content is helping you. For your question, I used to use OBS studio for my online presentations to get a nice picture and picture on zoom, but on my MacBook Pro 2016 Quad-Core i7 it always spun my fans to full blast that the noise was so annoying, even if it was just my presentation on Keynote or PowerPoint, Zoom and OBS running. What is great in your scenario Ecamm is optimized for Apple silicon. I think your bottle neck might be in the RAM department and using OBS and not the M1 chip. I run a Go Pro 7 Black connected to an elgato 4k CamLink as well with no issues, and I don't think your steam deck will take up minimal resources. Now, since Keynote updated with webcam in presentation mode, I never had to use OBS so I never have tried it on my Mac mini M1. That being said I plan to do some live streams for this channel this year and can't wait to test it out on OBS and looking to test out Ecamm and stream yard as well. So, I know some people running OBS studio to do live streams and I believe OBS is still not even optimized for apple silicon, but I could be wrong, and they have had great experience with limited to no drop frames streaming at 1920x1080. Because the 16GB of ram is unified memory and works together with the M1 chip, I don't think you will have too many issues if any. Now, between the Mac Mini M1 and Mac Studio, if your budget is flexible with what you are doing today I would suggest to jump up to the Mac Studio M1 Max. I wouldn't suggest the M1 Ultra, for your use case, as it might be like buying a Lambo but driving 30 Miles an hour 99% of the time. The reasons why I would go with the Mac Studio M1 Max, is one, you don't currently have a Mac mini, and the M1 Max is a beast on its own, and it comes standard with 32 GB of RAM, and I believe that will be more than enough for today and well into the future. Bench marks are surpassing $6000 Mac Pro's, in some of not most scenarios and the Mac Studio base model is less than half the price. The big jump is the 24 core GPU which I think will help a lot for live streams, vs only 8 cores and I don't think 8K video is that far in the future to be a standard as 4K is today. So the Mac Studio is ready and able when that time comes. The only change I would recommend in my use case is to upgrade the base SSD to 1TB. I will be creating a video Mac mini M1 vs Mac Studio, based on your question, so I will add more detail as well. But if your budget isn't flexible the Mac mini M1 with 16GB or RAM I think it will be capable to run what you want to do today, but depending on what you plan to do in the future and a possible move to stream at 4K and Video editing in 8K, you might have the urge to upgrade in a year or two. With the Mac Studio, I think would be a more solid choice for you and your situation. Sorry, for the long response and hope it helps my friend!

I had a similar question but my requirements are a bit different. My usage would be about 60% general usage and 40% fairly simple video editing (with maybe some photo editing). I’ll probably use iMovie or Final Cut Pro. I was also debating whether to buy the M1 Mac Mini 16GB or the Mac Studio M1 Max with 32/64GB. Would you still suggest the Mac Studio? It’s probably over kill for my needs but I’ll probably use it 5 years plus as my main computer so the extra £1,000 won’t really be a factor over that time.

Hi @RiverCoast! Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment and great question, much appreciated. If you are doing simple editing, not a lot of B-Roll, and more or less the same type of editing I am doing for my KZfaq videos up to 4K, the Mac Mini M1 with 16GB of RAM is fully capable. If that 40% of simple editing is long-form videos, the main difference is going to be your export times. Because I only export 1-2 videos a week, I typically leave my Mac Mini to do its thing and I am good to leave my computer for 10mins to fully dedicate to the export. If you regularly need to export and you need to use your computer at the same time, then the Mac Studio would be a better choice. The huge advantage is that you are using imovie and FCP which are both optimized for the M1 chip set. Because I already have the Mac Mini M1 and handling my workflow nicely and feel I still have room, I don't see myself upgrading to the Mac Studio. If you have the budget, go Mac Studio, but the Mac Mini M1 in my opinion will be fine for what you explained. Hope that helps my friend!

Hi elev8, thanks for your video A wana Mac mini m1 16 ram, and I'm graphics designer, using photoshop, illustrators and indesign I have questions that, is it good for me? And, which 256 or 512 do you prefer? ( I thought about 256 and using 1T external ssd whit it, is it OK?)

Hi Alireza! Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment, I really appreciate it! I think the Mac mini M1 16GB will be great for your use case. The 16GB of RAM will really help when you get into multiple layers in the Adobe work suite. I personally went with the 512GB, mainly because I have a NAS so I don’t archive anything on my Mac Mini. I only have working files and 512GB works for my needs. If you have a backup solution I still would recommend the 512GB. If you don’t have a backup solution and planning on leaving all your work and past work on your Mac Mini I would suggest to go a min of 1TB SSD depending on how large your files are. Hope that helps!

Would you recommend the M1 Mac Mini for motion graphics? I do not have the budget for a Mac Studio.
@Elev8Project
@Elev8Project Жыл бұрын
Hey Rishabh Agarwal! Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment and a great question! First, I want to let you know that I don't work on motion graphics outside of Final Cut Pro. So, take my recommendation as a non-motion graphic designer lol. I can only give you my thoughts and hope it serves you my friend. No matter if you are using After Effects, Motion or another motion graphics software and decide to get the Mac mini M1, get 16GB over 8GB and upgrade the SSD. Depending on how many layers the RAM might max out and will transition to use your SSD hindering rendering times etc. I haven't seen the performance of After Effects since it has been updated to run natively with M1. That being said, if you are looking for a dedicated machine to run After Effects, I might not recommend the Mac mini M1, again depending on how complicated or complex the project. Working on the project I don't think will be an issue, just the rendering and the time it will take might be quicker even on an evenly priced PC. If you are using Motion, again as a dedicated motion graphics your bottleneck will be in rendering and RAM usage. What I can tell you is that the Mac mini M1 will perform well-using Motion, it will depend on plugins and rendering times which may become pain points. Again, I don't use my Mac mini M1 for motion graphics, but something I want to play with in the future. I will be using Motion to create my future motion graphics and it will most likely be on the Mac mini M1 :). Hope that helps my friend!

@Elev8Project
@Elev8Project Жыл бұрын
Hey Gabriel Castro! Thanks for taking the time to leave a question in the comments, I really appreciate it. I don't day trade, and typically will do stocks a couple times a quarter. I will say that the Mac mini M1 does great processing multiple threads of data and if you are running multiple "chrome" browsers etc the 16GB will be worth it, just because Chrome seems to take up RAM. If you are running more than 2 displays, this might not be the best solution, only because it is only limited to 2 displays. I say that only because I typically see people that do trading run multiple displays. I hope that helps my friend!
