Jesus, if that's true then the conversation is over. Of obly we didn't have to pay so much more in Britain, for example a base macmini costs the equivalent of £490 but over here costs £649

I plan to buy a Mac in 2023-Good luck for 500K subscribers!.You are so close!!. This is very interesting indeed,The M1 Max studio is clearly the superior machine and way more worth it,especially at a cheaper price.Also with the faster ssds i feel it really worth it,However the M2 pro may be enough for most people even at lower configurations and so in that case that might be better for longevity and a bit more power !!.Anyway thanks so much Matt for your great content-Keep it up!.

Argos in the UK are selling the studio at 1499 right now .. thats about 400 less than anywhere else!! Now i just need to find 1499 lol😂

In around 1988 I bought a Schneider PC/AT 10 MHz for around £700. It had a none standard slower 20 Mb hard disk which is why it was so cheap. It had on board EGA graphics. It revolutionised my gaming and word processing. It wasn't a proprietary system such as the Amiga where the base system was cheap but every upgrade cost a fortune. Over the next three years I upgraded to a 50 Mb hard disk, bought a VGA card and monitor and a bought a higher capacity floppy disk drive. Modern Macs are even more restrictive than Amiga's were in 1988. You cant upgrade your storage for any money no matter how much you pay. A Mac Studio with a single plug in 512 Gb flash module cannot have a second one fitted even though this would be a simple plug in option. Linus Tech bought two 512 Gb Mac Studios but found that something in the firmware stopped the 512 Gb flash module from one being used to upgrade the other. Apple's only upgrade path is to buy a completely new system. The cost of extra flash or RAM chips in one of these "upgraded" systems costs around ten times the cost of the chips themselves.

Yes i ges it depends on the user his or her personal preference needs and how much they are ready to spend on the mac .I think that's the major determiner like for example I love the iphone 14 pro for what it offers how powerful it is just elegant and the security

This corresponds exactly with my findings, though I compared the M2 Pro Mini with a 1TB SSD which does improve performance. However, the M1 Max Studio base model with a 1TB drive is correspondingly faster. There are some very specific scenarios where you might opt for the M2 Pro Mini, but none of them are performance related. If it's going to sit on your desk only, and you need 32MB of RAM, you've crossed the threshold and should go with the M1 Max Studio. I disagree with the assessment that Apple made a mistake with the SSD drives on older generation models. Being somewhat cynical, I think the reduced SSD performance was adopted to maintain a clear divide between the Mini and Studio. When I paired the Mini with a very fast 5GB/s external drive, I did notice the gap between the Max Studio and Mini shrink further for IO bound tasks. On the GPU side of things, there's nothing you can do with the Mini to close in on the capabilities of the Studio. In this case, you don't get what you paid for unless less (in size) really is more for your use case.

I just got the M2 pro With 16 gb and a 1tb drive, and I've noticed that I already got a message telling me that my ram was full and I needed to close apps, coming from an older 2017 iMac with 32 Gb , I think I made a mistake with the ram ... so I think I'm going to return it to  who gave me 30 days in order to buy a new Mac mini M2 pro with 32 Gb and a 2 Tb drive. I was lurking at the Mac Studio but if GPU performance isn't your priority like me , the M2 pro have more advantages, yes it doesn't have the 2 USB C ports and Card reader on the front but the mini is more powerful CPU wise and SSD is faster depending on the amount you choose ( 1tb is twice as fast as 512 Gb, 2 Tb is even faster than 1 Tb from the tests I've seen ) and do not forget that the mini have wifi 6 E, latest Bluetooth and HDMI 2.1 ... things that the studio doesn't have yet... the ideal thing would be to wait for the M2 Mac Studio but I'm tired of waiting... lol Loved your review, but I'm kind of surprised that you order these machines with just 512 Gb ... it seems a bit silly to me , of course there are external drives, but for re sell purposes 1 tb is a better idea. I was hesitating a bit cos I love the studio design, but the M2 pro Mac mini is more fitting to me .

Wow this is so informative. You should open up an academy Matt. You explain things in detail and with knowledge of the products indeed. Based on your reviews; I think the Apple mini has a beautiful build but the Apple studio seems is More a workable device for content creators who wouldn't want to suffer any downtime with projects and yet have a powerhouse.

I just don't have space for the Studio. My M1 Mini sits perfectly under my 42" LG 43UD79 monitor. Only the memory bandwidth is making me consider the Studio. Also, the 1TB M2 Pro Mini comes with a faster SSD (6,000 MB/s SSD) than the 512GB one. The 1TB SSD comes with 4 NAND chips.

I ordered a Mac mini pro with 19 core gpu, 16GB ram and 1TB storage. Little cheaper than the studio and still overkill for my needs. I like the small form factor and that I can take it apart to clean the dust out.

The port difference is not as large as you make it out to be as with the new HDMI spec it's like getting double the HDMI connectors.

Apple is really good at getting people to "upgrade just a little more". Start at the base M2 Mac Mini and upgrade to 16GB of RAM and 512GB SSD... Then you're just $300 away from an M2 Pro. Upgrade that a bit and then you're at Mac Studio pricing... I doubt I can even make the base M2 sweat, but somehow I briefly considered the M2 Pro... How do they do that?

I would not mind a M1 Pro 14 inch for traveling as I find my M1 Pro 16 a bit large for traveling. A M2 pro will however force me to buy a new monitor and I don't like the price of true HDR capable monitors and find the price of the SDR capable Studio display to expensive. considering that I am planing on buying either the top end iPhone 15 or the new Panasonic S5x camera when I know the quality of iPhone videos compared to the S5x.

Great video! I’m on the fence but leaning towards M2pro max mini 32gb and 1TB SSD for $1899. I’m a composer running Logic Pro and coming off a 2017 i7 iMac 40Gb ram and 512SSD. I don’t really care about GPU.L Since I don’t cut video. The base mac studio is similarly priced. Would appreciate any input. Oh, I don’t care about 10GB ethernet (Mac studio) Mini does have latest Wi-Fi and Bluetooth and hdmi 2.1. Thank you!

I have both a beefy M2 Pro Mini and similarly configured Studio. I got the Mini for tricky live gig settings. So yes, it does make sense in very specific settings. In the Studio, the M1 Max Studio makes way more sense. A third more audio tracks, smoother media handling, 30% faster video handling, faster IO, the ability to quickly shuffle very large sample libs around, runs even cooler.

I bought M2 pro 512 and 32 gb machine, i work in sound tools cz i m a sound designer. I would say performance is good, but what i m facing now is compaitability problem with many audio tools. Hope it will get resolved soon, as i m still using tools that are designed for intel processeor

When you say that the SSD doesn't need to be that fast, are you then referring to a music production with 150 tracks/stems recorded in 48kHz/24bit which are going to be played in sync with each other for a couple of minutes in real-time, and on top of that you have a video shown in real-time as well because that's what you make the music for - or do you only think about the system being fast enough for coping files? Or do you think that those 150 audio WAV files are streamed form the RAM!? I think you need to put things in a perspective before telling us what is enough. Otherwise, good useful information - thanks for taking your time making this video 🙂

There are som advantages with the M2 pro not mentioned: - If you are a developer or using a lot of web apps the faster CPU cores mean a lot. - For 3D rendering the tiled memory of the M2 GPU can give huge performance gains

In essence, as he said, if GPU is more valuable to you (as it is to me) the studio is better value, if CPU is more important, say you were doing music then perhaps the mini specced up.

@@ggproductions7078 The 3D rendering I am refering to is GPU rendering (not CPU). Look at other YT channels test of blender, where the new architecture enables higher memory usage for the GPU cores and something like 3x performance gains - But of course the studio will get that upgrade soon too :)

@@OPM_Viking oh I know you meant that, and the new architecture decision is an interesting one as is the value or otherwise of the double memory bandwidth on the Max chips v Pro chips. But I only talk about my usage and that's video. I also wonder, (and you will know much better than me) given the m1 max chips have 8 perf cores I think, how they perform against the 10 core pro which I think only has six. Maybe that's just me though, going down the rabbit hole!

I am not sure how you get to the "Future proofing" advantage as, unless I am totally mistaken, these system units are not upgradable. I am running a 2017 iMAC 27 at present - originally bought with 16GB RAM. I have upgraded the memory twice over the years. I haven't upgraded the internal HD but a friend who has the same model, replaced the original disk with a larger one. As I said, I don't believe either of these such upgrades can be done with the M1 / M2 family. My Intel based iMAC is still performing well and supports the latest o/s and applications. Yes, the new Apple silicon based systems will give better performance and I am seriously considering it but, it is not a simple decision as, in truth, the performance of the current system is adequate and I am not really forced to upgrade and secondly, I will also have to buy a new display as well as the system unit in order to replace the iMAC. And then, there is the tantalising anticipation of an M3 based system not a million miles away!!! Decisions, decisions, decisions. Life is never easy!!!

I think a base model 14 M1 MBP would suffice for most windows pc users, especially those coming from a 16/512 windows laptop. Those who already have a M1Pro device I don't see any reason for them to upgrade.

@@ricci.hidalgo Yeah - I have seen several videos on that just recently. Now, the M3 - is it worth waiting for? The M1 has already shown capability to pretty much handle anything I would likely throw at it, so M1 Max would work fine, same for M2 Pro - but the upgrade on the Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and HDMI is pushing me towards Mac Mini now 🤪

@@davidcook1057 It's indeed a tough decision and depends on each needs. There are many details to consider. I am buying the Mac Studio because it has more ports and is still stronger on Final Cut /After Effects whilst the Mini M2 Pro is a little faster on normal use (barely noticeable). I also love the fact that the Mac Studio is completely silent and will never run hot.

@@ricci.hidalgo I keep going back to the Mac Studio for those reasons and I just prefer the form factor as well. Having that SD slot in the front is a very convenient feature. I want the 1TB model and those haven’t gone on sale. Costco was selling the base model at $1,699 and I am bummed I missed out - but that was a 512TB option. Just going to be a bit more patient to see when the M3 is revealed this year and go from there. Cheers!

M2 Mac Mini loses it "great" value after you start upgrading it. Looks like a M1 Mac Studio is a better value if you need more ram and gpu power plus you will get more ports.

Matt, are you being paid by Apple for these reviews?? 'Apple made a boo-boo in making the M1 so fast' (paraphrased)??? You've got to be kidding. Apple need to show to non-Apple people how *good* their equipment is versus the alternative. There is *no room* for producing poorly performing products simply because they chose to populate only *some* of the board locations, versus populating all the board locations with appropriately sized memory parts. The comparison between M1 studio and M2 pro mini is very timely and informative, due to the overlap in pricing. What I'd like to know is: what's the minimum Mini storage you need to choose to get the best file system performance, and, how do the two compare when considering workloads that actually require the use of the cooling solutions each offers?

There is almost no reason for a Mac Studio anymore unless you need the GPU but not for GPU calculation in which case the PC world is laughing at your high price snail speed. It's so far away from a PC with a 3090.

Useless benchmarks without real use cases. Also wtf, they made a mistake using fast SSDs last gen? These things cost a lot, we consumers deserve THE BEST. “Too fast” doesn’t exist.

Mini has 100gbs memory bandwidth and the Studio has 400 gbps memory bandwidth. Studio wins every time. Also 17 billion more transistors in the M1 Max than M2 Pro.
