After using the base model M1 Max Mac Studio for just about a week, I am not so convinced that this is the machine that will be replacing my M1 Max MacBook Pro 14"...

I have m1 max 24core 16inch. I have never had any fan noise even once. I think that is an issue with 14inch. I saw the reviews before buying it and went with 16. I am doing game dev, and 3d with blender etc. This is amazing powerful to me. I am not gonna switch. I would only get studio for m1 ultra. Max in studio does not make that much sense for me.

I have an MBP 16" M1 Pro... bought for Logic but have found myself taking it with me everywhere so I'm always having to plug everything back up. I got the base Studio, I can still take my MBP with me and leave everything plugged in, I can' hear my fans, it blazing fast. As I'm learning Final Cut I'm quite excited to have the Max processor and 32GB in the Studio. For the price the base model is an amazing deal creators of any kind IMHO.

I will buy it as soon as I can save up the money. Although I would love to get the Ultra I am picking up a One step better than the base Max with 64mb/4tb model before the end of the year. By that time more software should be updated to run on the M series chips.

For me, the ports packed on the MBP are more than enough. The one that's missing is a USB A, problem that a tiny adapter I bought fixed pretty quicky. The beautiful 4kish 120hz mini led display, it's tremendous performance and its portability, with a huge battery inside it, is priceless. To me it was a no brainder.

There mixed for a reason. And yet u watch another video just praising the Mac studio and new display. - it costs 1600 and the bloody thing has an attached cable. WTF it isn't the 1980s anymore CRTs are dead Apple get with the program. Seriously that makes this worthless E waste when your cable frays or gets damaged. This is terrible for the planet and for the consumer. Period - It's the same exact panel as the LG ultra fine (Ya just cause u wasted 1600 bucks doesn't mean it magically will outperform an IDENTICAL panel from LG. Ya they made the panel btw.) - uses a Very powerful A13 chip and yet does nothing with it but run a Webcam. - even better the Webcam is blurry and looks awful - the stand is again stuck to the display and costs a fortune to get a veda mount or a stand that actually moves. A ripoff basically as usual.

Hello Brandon, Jose from Puerto Rico. I just subscribed to your channel. This review is actually the one I was waiting for on KZfaq, because I use Photoshop every day as well as LR Classic. You actually demonstrated how it performs with Photoshop, and I didn't see the dreaded beach ball or lag that's common on older machines. I would like to see a more extensive demo with Photoshop since that's what interests me with this machine. I'm currently waiting on the base model Mac Studio, but bumped it up to 64gb of ram and 1tb storage. In my case, this would be a major upgrade since I'm using an old MacBook Pro mid-2014 model plugged in to the wall because the battery died on me. As soon as the newer machine comes in, I'll send it for repairs and hold on to it as a backup. The new machine makes more sense since all my laptops are docked and used with an external monitor, keyboard and mouse. This video was very informative.

Curious what version of Photoshop you experienced the lag from the MacBook. I'm running a 2017 iMac and I noticed crazy lag issues editing Canon R5 files in Photoshop after going to PS 2022. It wasn't until I moved to the latest update (23.2.2) did they finally subside completely.

Brandon: For many years now I have owned a PC (Windows) computer. After reviewing your informative videos, I am very impressed on your knowledge of Mac products and recommendations. I keep having crashes and out of memory RAM on my Dell pc-enough is enough! I have 32GB of RAM which, I am guessing may be not enough. I have to do constant "temp cleaning of files" tasks in order to prevent crashes. Chrome is evem worse - constant crashes once I get to 300MB. I do not do gaming or video editing, more simple tasks and web browsing. I do write sheet music and play it on Overture. With a PC it stores all of your web tasks which "takes up memory". To make a long story short, I really want to switch to MAC products and get the MAC Studio M1, undecided about the core processing (above my knowledge) but I was thinking about 96 to 128GB of RAM. What would you recommend? You also touched on the Studio Display in this video and you are impressed with it. I really need great visual and sound for running music. Many others frown of this display because of the cost but otherwise it has a great review. I would rather put my money in something that is going to last and is a great product. You are the best source for this knowldge! Keep up the great work and your videos!!! Chuck PS...no iphone 16 talk at the WWDC unusual.

Great review, Brandon! But I wonder if your Mac Studio really is completely silent for you? When you sit at you desk can you hear it? My Mac Studio has a clearly audible air flow woosh sound. Even when I am standing three meters away from it I can hear it. I'm about to trade in my Mac Studio for a 14" MacBook Pro. 😕 But this video makes me wonder if my MAc Studio has a problem.

I'm confused about people saying their Mac Studio's are completely silent as well. I just received mine a few days ago and there is no way I could keep that thing on my desk. It's way too noisy. I'm returning it today.

Thanks man. Very interesting video. I have been toying between the 16 inch MPB or the Mac Studio. This has edged me towards the Mac Studio. In reality, I don’t travel with it. It’ll just be in the office. Lower fan noise, lots of ports, 10gb Ethernet by default. Though of course it doesn’t have the beautiful screen or the portability. One tip I did want to pass on though, was that I watched an interesting video comparing the 14 inch vs 16 inch internals. The 16 inch has much, much bigger fans; so it stays silent and cool in use according to quite a few videos on here. Which is quite a big advantage over the 14 inch if its in an office docked most of the time. If you are considering returning your 14 inch machine, I would consider that. It may be that the 16 inch comes into the equation if its quiet and cool. Though, the 10GB Ethernet seems to be an extra $150 dongle needed on the laptops, and swapping in and out of machines is always more of a phaff then just having a machine that sits plugged in most of the time. Maybe just keep both!!! Lol

I don't understand the lag you're getting in Camera Raw with that MBP. That should be buttery smooth no? Until recently ordering a studio I've been on a 2015 mid-tier 27" imac and even today it performs much better than that, with minimal lag for brush edits in raw files (that's editing raw files from all sorts of contemporary cameras, as well as massive 100 layer product imagery comps in PS). Seems like a software issue?

When you transferred your files on the M1 Max Mac Studio, did you use the front USB C ports? Macbook Pro has Thunderbolt ports on the laptop. M1 Mac Studio with the M1 Max has 4 Thunderbolt ports only in the back. Two USB A ports also. So the slow transfer speed would be either the USB C ports in the front 10gb per second compared to 40gb per second on the Thunderbolt ports with the Macbook Pro. Or did you use the SD Card reader for transferring your files? I believe the Apple engineers have been limiting the performance on the Mac Studios. A software update can fix this like what they had to do with the Intel Macbook Pros a few years ago.

In Apple to Apple comparisons what are the specs on your Macbook Pro 14"? Are the SSD size and GPU cores the same for your laptop and the Mac Studio. Should of watched the whole video before asking this question. 14" Macbook Pro with 64gb of memory and a 1tb ssd compared to the basic M1 Max Mac Studio.

I think Apple has attenuated the power input to the GPU for certain operations.... Maybe they will offer a future OS or Firmware update to take better advantage of all the GPU "cores".

The 16” MBP M1 Max has better thermals than the 14”. You should do your comparison of the Mac studio to the 16”, not the 14”. Also as far as other reviewers, the ultra has almost no significant advantage over the max. The ultra is sadly not optimized yet but in the future I’m sure it will be.

The bottleneck is the SSD, the base model have slower SSD (512gb). The RAM memory help too. Not a fair comparison... But good video overall !

The bar chart at 3:04 is strange. The axis is numbered 0, 1, 2, 10, 15, 20 and the bars don't represent the correct data. The single core scores were 1782 for the MBP and 1714 for the Mac Studio, a difference of -4%. The chart looks much closer to 10%. The multi-core one is worse - the difference between 12341 and 12401 is just 0.5%, which should be barely visible on the chart but again it looks to be about 5%. The chart makes the difference look much more dramatic than it really is. The next chart is similarly strange.

I got my Mac studio yesterday and was surprised at how loud the fans are! I have a M1 Max, with 32GPU Core. At idle the fans runs at 1350rpm ... and I don't understand why, because if I set this manually to the minimum of 1100rpm, than the noise is almost gone and the CPU/GPU temperature doesn't change. I had the Mac Mini M1 since 1.5 years and It was noiseless! Now this Studio is cool but the Fans Noise are disappointing. This noise Is not only Air Noise but a bit of high frequenzy Noise too...i will call Apple today, because i don't know of this is normal or maybe anything Is wrong with the Fans...? Has someone the same problem?

Yes I have the same exact problem. I'm returning my unit tmrw. Apple support said I shouldn't be able to hear the fans. They are going to give me an Ultra as a loaner, so we'll see if it was just my M1 Max or if it is in both machines.

Not sure what you’re confused about. Better thermals mean the Mac studio keeps running faster and quieter with less lags. The SSD transfer speed differences might be down to the Mac studio not bioengineering directly soldered in

I've cancelled my studio display and probably going with the LG 32" or 40"Ultrawide. I dont want to spend $1000 more for 100 extra nits and a nice look. Not worth it in 2022

Budget is not an issue… but lack of knowledge…. Macbook pro, and if so 14 inch or 16 inch, or as a student and working from home, is the mac studio a much better choice? What projects will or can push a computer to its’s max?🤓🧐😅 How shall I understand the use of 64 gb ram vs 128 gb for future use! … I started a computer science degree now, I wanna hack, do vm, machine learning, design IOT tools, music production and fcp editing over the coming five to ten years and work as a SOC analyst and do my music production and videos at home… In what projects can one clearly say that you will use and need the 64 gb ram… and in what type of projects would you say you need the mac studio and 128 gb … I want to future proof myself but as a computer science student I also really want to understand what projects or combination of projects will clearly need 64 gb vs 128 gb… please give me some good practical examples😅I am really curious at all this and what the future have to come! Thanks to anyone out there who knows what works and when what is needed for what projects!

If you already own a 14” or 16” M1 Max 2021 MacBook Pro, I don’t see any reason to pick up an M1 Max Mac Studio. Apple does not seem to apply any additional voltage to take advantage of the better cooling, so it’ll perform roughly the same as the M1 Max MBP’s. Plug an external monitor into the closed clamshell and you essentially have the same computer already. You do have more ports on the Mac Studio, but that isn’t worth another $2000. Just pick up a Thunderbolt dock to make up the difference. The M1 Ultra Mac Studio is another story, if you need that kind of power.
