1:38 perfect example of a closed OO vowel, it's free but covered, with lots of falsetto-pull in the sound. When he opens it towards AH the voice bloom.

I noticed someone mentioned Nelson must have worked hard at his mastery of Russian. Nelson spoke several languages and Russian was one of them He had a background in opera before the movies and his critics always applauded his diction and breath control as well as the beauty of his voice. Had he continued in opera he probably would have been a great star. Unfortunately we'll never know!

Everyone knows Jeanette MacDonald was from Philadelphia, but Nelson was born in Rhode Island and spent his earliest childhood in Massachusetts but came to Philadelphia in his adolescence and studied music in Philly. The City Of Brotherly Love is proud of both of them.

I was born in 82 but thanks to amazing grandparents I grew up on nelson with maytime, naughty marietta, chocolate soldier etc........but this piece of his always brings me back.......his breath control for the note at 1:36 for 20 seconds is pure talent. An ineffably sublime rendition

As a Russian, I can add that he still has a minimal accent. Yes, it is felt, but some people from remote parts of the country speak much more different from the classical Russian language than he does. The performance for a person who does not know the language is simply magnificent. If you were brought up on such films, you are a good person.

@@captainwilliammorgansantim5629È UN canto TRADIZIONALE RUSSO DI LAVORO, CELEBRE. RISALE ALL'EPOCA ZARISTA ( XIX sec,).

My parents introduced us to Eddy et al when Dad had 16mm protectors and rented classic films (by mail, by check, and delivered beautifully wrapped in heavy-duty, double strapped boxes). What fun. And Nelson featured heavily in the roster. I remember this movie was my favorite next to Maytime with Jeanette.

Such a powerful song performed by many but NONE have delivered it with the same distinct level of emotion that so beautifully comes through in this recoding. And as noted before, such SUPERB breath control!! STILL the BEST recording to my ears!!! Thanks for that Nelson!! 👍👍👍👏👏👏

As a Russian, I can say that for a person who does not know the language, this is simply great. The accent is minimal. And how he pronounces "eshe" and "eh"! It's nice to see that in old Hollywood, Russians were portrayed as they are, without that awful accent and cliche: honest and decent people. However, in the film, Russian emigrants who lost in the Civil War) A kind of "Confederate" in your own way.

CANTANTE A ME IGNOTO e che ho conosciuto ora , grazie a youtube.

Hell of a surprise: His Russian accent is damn good! Compares favorably with that of a native speaker, e.g. Leonid Kharitonov. (The only giveaway was his technically correct but actually non-native pronunciation of the word ещё.) The scene overall is pretty sappy, but his performance rescues it.

As a Russian by nationality, I can say that he pronounces the words clearly and correctly, but with a noticeable accent. And not in English or British (the British for us speak in the nose and have problems with the letter P, and the Americans "swallow" words, speak too fast and pronounce vowels differently), but in some strange way. Is this the transatlantic dialect of old Hollywood? I don't know.

Dall'epoca greco romana in poi.

If you look at the picture of .The Volga Boatmen' by Rapin, said to be Stalin's favourite painting it brings new meaning to this song. The depiction of sheer physical drudgery and hopelessness says it all and let's not forget that there were teams of women who did the job of hauling boats against the current too, in all weathers and often pregnant.

@@christinewhite6993 A pleasure. I first heard of the song when I was pulling a boat along a dock and got told I should be singing the Vulga Boatman song. Then I remembered it was a tune I learned as a kid getting organ lessons.

Not yet. This pic came out when Molotov and Ribbentrop were making nice and most Americans wanted to stay out of European quarrels. IIRC 'Balalaika' never got shown in the USSR during the three or four years of uneasy alliance with America bc it was set among White Russian exiles. I wonder what Russians would have made of this rendition of a song Communism had embraced as the plaint of an exploited people.

I am continuing here ? I think he did a terrific job of you think that the song is basso profondo and the Russian language unimaginably difficult to pronounce unless of you spent years in this country . I am surprised and amazed he managed to sing the Volga men , and l know what l am talking about because l am a musician and a singer 🇬🇷🎶🐸🐌🐁🌸🍀🍀😾🥰

This is the best version on here. However the setting of a musical always seems artificial to me. Also the first guy who joins in has balls near his ankles, his voice is so low. The second guy who joins in looks drunk.
