As a Russian, I can add that he still has a minimal accent. Yes, it is felt, but some people from remote parts of the country speak much more different from the classical Russian language than he does. The performance for a person who does not know the language is simply magnificent. If you were brought up on such films, you are a good person.

My parents introduced us to Eddy et al when Dad had 16mm protectors and rented classic films (by mail, by check, and delivered beautifully wrapped in heavy-duty, double strapped boxes). What fun. And Nelson featured heavily in the roster. I remember this movie was my favorite next to Maytime with Jeanette.

As a Russian, I can say that for a person who does not know the language, this is simply great. The accent is minimal. And how he pronounces "eshe" and "eh"! As a Russian by nationality, I can say that he pronounces the words clearly and correctly, but with a noticeable accent. Такой мощный и великий певец и актер как Нельсон Эдди способен передать и мощь русской души , тем более ,при сотрудничестве и поддержке Федора Шаляпина ,и исполняет именно на русском ,а "блоху" Мусоргского ( " the flea ")- на русском и английском яз, а как великолепно Нельсон поет оперные арии русских композиторов на русском языке !класс!

IIRC 'Balalaika' never got shown in the USSR during the three or four years of uneasy alliance with America bc it was set among White Russian exiles.
