Again, Happy Thanksgiving. Well, some of you asked for him, now you've got him. Macbeth was my most requested Villain Tribute since before the Big Crash. It took me a while to figure out an approach. Well, here he is. Afterall, what Scottish King is more immortal than Macbeth? More mortal too, for that matter.
Also, after the complete suckiness of the guy in my last tribute, I think we all deserved an antidote.

11:07 "Death is never the answer. Life is." "I'm just so tired..." I can't help but feel that not only is this a lesson that killing doesn't solve your problems and pain, but also a subtle lesson about how suicide isn't the answer as well. It's very well written.

Except suicide isn't the answer because it cheats you out of your normal life. That doesn't apply to McBeth. McBeth has lived so long that I can't even imagine how quickly the years pass for him. Imagine decades going by in a blur like months do for us. He can't ever truly make friends because they'll be gone almost as soon as he starts to care for them. He's stuck being a witness forever. While the life he should have had ended centuries earlier.

@Edward Gaines Yeah, the poor dude deserves to finally rest, but to get what he's earned requires him to go on a never-ending quest to murder someone who, while very deserving of death, requires him to essentially give up on a joyful life. Or try to live in a world where he eternally outlives friends, lovers, and children.

"I'm just so TIRED." You FEEL that. In that one word you hear and feel everything Macbeth has gone through over the past 900 years, and honestly it makes it almost sad that he is constantly being stopped by our heroes. Yes they urge him to live, to find meaning in life again, but the man has been at this for NINE HUNDRED YEARS. You almost want to say, "Just let him do it" after hearing that delivery. You really feel bad for him.

John Rys-davies played the absolute HECK out of this role. He makes you feel Macbeth's pain and suffering. You learn he's not actually a villain who is after Goliath (despite the look of his first appearance in the series) but a broken man full of pain. He gets a little hope from Goliath when once again, he lost someone he thought he could find love again with "At least now you KNOW, you're capable of love. Search for that love, because she's out there." Macbeth manages a weak smile. I own the gargoyles tv series. Absolutely phenomenal. All the actors in this were phenomenal.

+Ian Greene-He was always a tragic figure with Shakespeare. However, this show fleshes him out even better. In Shakespeare's play, MacBeth is consumed by his insatiable lust for power where Duncan has to bring him down in order to even save England (Scotland and Britain) from the wreckage and the flames MacBeth unleashed on it. Here, he's a genuinely good person that all throughout his life, he wanted to be a hero for everyone and help everyone in need. He had a huge amount of compassion and a huge heart, even to those like Duncan who didn't deserve that mercy. He was just repeatedly screwed over by people he considered close to him. And then Demona, his closest ally and arguably friend screwed him over so bad, he wasn't even able to see his wife and his son for the rest of their lives. (And MacBeth probably had to watch helplessly while his son assumed the throne and died not soon after where England was thrown into complete chaos.) He is eternally bound to the same woman who took away everyone and everything from him (that deal was arranged by the Weird Sisters who only wished to use him and Demona for their own ends), where he is forced to still share her pain, and he is unable to die and be released from his torment where he can finally see his wife and son again in the afterlife. This MacBeth is far more MacBeth than even Shakespeare's MacBeth.

@@feraflauna3238 You know when you mentioned Macbeth's Son Luach, I think that was the most depressing part of all, is that Grouach convinced Macbeth that His going into exile and having the people believe that He was dead was the best way to ensure that Luach would prevail against Canmore, then only a mere 7 Months later, Luach and Grouach's Father Bodhe die in battle against Canmore and Grouach subsequently commits suicide, and as you said Macbeth has to live with the fact that He COULD'VE done something but because He'd already been declared dead chose not interfere, you're also right about Macbeth repeatedly being screwed over by those closest to Him, His Cousin Prince/King Duncan who did everything He could to prevent Him from becoming King, which ultimately caused it to happen, Demona who sentenced Clan Moray to it's doom due to Her own paranoia, and Bodhe, albeit more unwittingly on His end than Duncan and Demona

I love how the characters evolve in this show. Macbeth starts out as seemingly a bad dude but as they tell more of his story you see he was an honorable man. A true sympathetic character you start to root for and hope he finds some semblance of either peace of happiness with his existence. It's to bad Demona believed that Macbeth would betray her. But she to had a reason for distrust after she though the Captain of the Guard would protect her clan. She still made her own fate and has been trying to get her "revenge" for centuries. Truly sad that even after being reunited with Goliath in the beginning of the show she decides her way is the right way. But even she can show a caring heart when Thailog is going to kill her daughter. Such an amazing show. They really showed it care and gave the audience a great product.

+ManMonkey600-When you get to the two parter over how he met Demona, MacBeth was/is a good man that has repeatedly gotten royally screwed over. He has tried so hard to be a genuinely kind, considerate person. He had a heart of true gold, only for the individuals he knew to repeatedly betray him in the worse ways. Duncan and then Demona. Because of Demona, MacBeth lost everything. He lost his life, even as an immortal, he was stripped of everything but his name after her betrayal. He lost his wife and son, even before they died a natural death where he knew he was going to outlive them, he was forced to leave them so his son could take the throne without the fear and suspicion over how MacBeth was still alive. So MacBeth never got to see his own wife and child ever again. He probably never knew how either of them died. (Or if his son met the same tragic end as history, knowing he could do nothing to prevent that and watch his own country go down in flames.) He was never able to hold them again, even when they were dying. He never got to say goodbye. He was forced to live, forever, cursed to watch all the people that ever mattered to him die around him while he lived on. So it's wonder it broke him down pretty bad. Even then, I'd argue he never truly was a bad guy. I consider him more of a "good guy playing for the wrong side." What he wants just doesn't align with the gargoyles. He doesn't truly hate THEM and usually has no qualm with them, they just get in his way. Naturally, he doesn't have a lot of fondness for gargoyles and doesn't entirely trust them but he doesn't truly hate them either. He is a man with a big heart who has a lot of honor and dignity. At least with The Journey (which is still semi-canon, the comics are considered canon, catch the comics for the better version of The Journey anyway), it's heartwarming to see MacBeth far more happy. Willing to live a normal life again instead of just wanting to die and willing to come to the gargoyles' aid.

We grew up on shows like Gargoyles, Batman TAS, Superman TAS, Kim Possible, Pinky and the Brain, and more that told stories with morals intended to teach kids about life and the world and how to grow into it. Today's programs teach kids to be enttitled and adversarial, judgemental and bigoted, with opinionated messages framed by comfortable moral standing to disguse what's actually there. Moreover, they don't teach kids to think for themselves and decide for themselves what they will build in the world, but rather they teach kids to expect to be told what to build by someone else.

@@gameking8809 The situation is a little sticky. Disney always planned for a season three and it's obvious with the way season two ended that there were some very, very big plans Weisman intended for the story. However, sometime before season three, Disney fired and removed all the writers involved with the show. Fired the original animation team that did the show and replaced them with an animation studio that was probably willing to do it for far cheaper. (And it shows. While the style is not complete trash, it's a severe downgrade in season three. Much less detail and atmosphere.) Weisman got screwed over pretty royally as well. He had planned to stay on as showrunner but he was running ragged working on the show with little compensation or benefits for being run ragged. He asked Disney simply if he could have more time, freedom, compensation, and a chance to breathe. Disney said no and then turned around and gave the new showrunner the same benefits Weisman had asked for. Weisman stayed on as a "consultant" for the final season but his involvement was very minimal. He admitted most of his time was spent trying not to slap his head against the wall with what the writers were doing to his story and characters (a lot of his original ideas did make that season but were so badly handled, it's pretty embarrassing) and telling the new writers not to badly handle the characters. Weisman has said he only considers The Journey-the version on the show to be somewhat canon, but the version in the comics is much better. Basically, the comics is season three the way Weisman would've done it had he been able to. And from what I can tell, it is much, much better than what we got. It's really what we should have got in the first place. If you have the money and the means to track down the comics, I recommend you do so.

Then later on it turns out that Macbeth's misery and Demona's misguided vengeance was all orchestrated by an old foe who everyone thought dead centuries ago. "Did your own death save your son Lulach from Canmore?" As a kid watching this for the first time I never really got that but years later I realize that Canmore killed Lulach at some point and took the crown. Makes sense because the Weird Sisters said that both Duncan and Macbeth would have turns being king and so would their sons. There is a Gargoyle Wikia (take it with a grain of salt) that after Macbeth "died" Lulach only reigned as king for a few months just like his real life counterpart and was killed in battle along with Bodhe. The saddest part is that Gruoch was completely lost in grief and committed suicide by poison after losing her entire family. That's the story according to the wikia page anyway.
@feraflauna3238
@feraflauna3238 3 жыл бұрын
+guardian08527-Even back then, Disney would never have allowed a suicide on one of their shows. But given how dark Gargoyles is, I believe it. It would flesh out better why MacBeth is so angry about losing his wife and son. Not only was he not allowed to see them as long as they lived, but he was unable to do anything while his son and wife suffered tremendously. Luach was unable to save England and be the king that could've united and healed the country from the wreckage. It's easy to assume that Canmore orchestrated the fight that killed Luach. Gruoch would have no claim to the throne with her husband and son both gone so she would have to watch helplessly as Canmore took everything from her and her family. (I'm not sure how the Canmore family lost the crown though if Canmore did in fact take it. I wish the show could've delved into that.) Beyond pain and agony, she would take her own life to end her suffering. Because at that point, her life was the only thing she had any control over. And at some point, MacBeth would have to find out after the fact what happened to his own wife and child. That he couldn't be there for them, and he "watched" them be taken away from him. It's a pity MacBeth never seemed to have met the Canmore descendants, particularly Jon, and I wonder how he would feel if he met them.

+ztslovebird-MacBeth's entire reason for moving to NYC had to have been because he had suspected that Demona had taken up residence there somewhere, he just wasn't sure where, hence why he lured the Manhattan clan into a trap, he had hoped that by trapping them, he would lure Demona out of her hiding place, but as Goliath was quick to point out to them, they stood against Demona as well, so she wouldn't care whether they lived or died, especially by MacBeth's hand, and I think MacBeth, knowing they were innocent at the time, was regretful that he did get them involved, but some of that old hatred towards Demona rubbed off against the rest of her kind and since the Manhattan clan were in his way, he would get them out of his way however he could.

Macbeth is not so much a villain as he is an Anti-Villain. All he really wants is to slay Demona, (in so doing, get his revenge) and die. According to the Weird Sister's spell, only one of them can truly kill the other. Aside from his formidable skills in swordsmanship and hand to hand combat, he is a powerful sorcerer and cunning strategist. Then of course, he has little to fear against anyone because of his immortality. Absolutely no one, or anything, except Demona can slay him and end his eternal life.

+NicholasGeschke yeah you're exactly right...Macbeth wasn't on the same level of pure evil as Xanatos or Demona, like the title says a victim of fate. learning about his backstory we find he's a tragic character and the link to demona in how she became the way she is, Macbeth was a courageous man, who wanted to rule with justice and compassion, demona and her clan at his side, it started out that way but misunderstandings ruined the life's they had. that again adds to why this series was great to watch as a kid and now I get a deeper understanding of it that makes it even better

yeah looking back, I felt pure evil was harsh for both- you're right Xanatos was selfish, wanted what he wanted and when out and took it even if at the expense of others but even someone like xanatos had his limit, when Fox or his son were in danger, he protected them as a husband/father should. demona you could define with some psychopathic traits but really she only wanted what was best for her kind, however the wrongs and decisions she made led to the demise of her clan and her alliance with Macbeth...therefore being her worst enemy. yeah whatever that middle ground is-anti-hero/anti-villain, should've chosen my words better.

+NicholasGeschke-MacBeth is certainly not a villain in any way, he's just a "good guy playing for the wrong side" and has suffered through a lot of the same tragedy not much unlike his Shakespearean counterpart: his father was murdered by his own cousin for the throne, a cousin he stood by and defended until the end when Duncan revealed his true identity and suffered through Duncan's evil for years, always wanting to do the right thing and be a good person. His kindness towards Duncan and Canmore was not reciprocated and both Duncan and Canmore unraveled all the good he sought to do, and his closest second in command, ally, and good, close friend betrayed him and caused many close to him to die, his life shattered where he was unable to see his wife or his son for the rest of his life. MacBeth is a man that has lived for hundreds of years, living biologically, but not actually living, all the people he ever knew and loved were gone while he still survived, and if he ever dared get close with anyone else again in those hundreds of years, he only had to see them pass on while he couldn't. He lived a lonely, empty life, stripped of everything, the sole purpose driving his existence to get even with Demona, the one who betrayed him and stripped him of everything, his sole drive to finally kill her once and for all so he could end his own life, be at peace, and finally move on to see his loved ones again in the afterlife. MacBeth was willing to do almost everything and anything to bring Demona down, except he took pride in remaining a good person with decency so he had a code of honor and ethics he refused to ever break, he especially didn't want to become like Duncan or Demona. It's just that his own goals and motivations often conflicted with the gargoyles and the people that defended them, his hatred of Demona rubbing off in some way to her entire kind and because his motivations conflicted with the gargoyles, they weren't always on the best of terms, to put it lightly until Goliath, Angela, and Elisa saved him from Demona and Thailog and Goliath encouraged him that he still had enough life to live and he should exist again, be happy.

It's kind of ironic that Brooklyn and Lexington should mention the play Macbeth. You see, when I went to the Historical Villain Upgrade page on TV Tropes; I found this: William Shakespeare was a major purveyor of this trope out of necessity, writing histories to support the royal family's prejudices (not that he might not have agreed with them-but who knows?). "The Real Life Macbeth was one of Scotland's better early kings, and was especially known for his charity toward the poor. He defeated Duncan, a young tyrant invader, in a fair fight in battle, reigning successfully for 17 years before being defeated and killed in battle himself; he was succeeded first by his stepson, then by Malcolm III, the thane who had defeated him. Shakespeare's Macbeth is nothing like the original, partly because his source got a lot of things wrong, but also because Shakespeare was writing the play to appeal to King James I, who was descended from Duncan; portraying an ancestor of King James as weak, ineffective, and/or tyrannical (even if he really was) may have been tantamount to treason, and portraying his ancestor's enemy as a monster would certainly earn James' favor. The play echoes James's belief that kings were chosen by God and that God's will, no matter how thwarted in the short term by tyrants, could not fail in the end. Lady Macbeth's characterization is pure fabrication, as almost nothing is known about her beyond her name, Gruoch (?!)." So in a way, Gargoyles's portrayal of Macbeth is actually more accurate than that of the play.

William Shakespeare wrote during the reigns of both Queen Elizabeth I and James I. The Stuarts were said to be descendent from Banquo, who's line is prophesied by the witches to eventually rule Scotland (and by extension England). Hence, that play was Stuart propaganda. Likewise, when Shakespeare wrote Richard III and made that king into an unmitigated villain and cowardly murderer who's death at Bosworth Field at the hands of the future King Henry was the satisfying climax, he was writing Tudor propaganda to flatter Elizabeth. If that demonstrates anything, it's that no one could ever accuse William Shakespeare of being doctrinaire.

Well, that's what MacBeth really wanted. He just wanted it to end for him. He wanted to die so he could finally be released from his immortal torment. So he could finally be reunited with his wife and son in the afterlife. It makes you wonder if MacBeth was ever so desperate, that he tried to commit suicide before to end it? Only to find out the curse is bound where only Demona could kill him, or he could kill Demona to break the pact. For centuries, he kept on looking for a way, just to die. He didn't care about leaving any legacy, that was already taken from him, he just wanted his revenge on Demona and with that, final peace. Demona doesn't want it to end. Her hatred of humanity, her hatred of everyone, consumes her so much that she wants to live to inflict endless suffering on them. A few times, she was stopped so narrowly from committing outright genocide on the human race. Everything was taken from her, but unlike MacBeth, she wants to live to take her life back, or that's what she believes. She wants to live in order to achieve the peace, happiness, and personal forgiveness she longs for. Her life in fact matters to her far more than everyone else's. Even when Goliath broke the crying gargoyle that would've protected gargoyles from the genocide spell, knowing her daughter would die from her hands, she still attempted to smash the spell canister. Demona believes everyone is against her and she has no wish for a true successor. She denied any chance for anyone to be her successor. So Demona and MacBeth are locked into this immortal feud: Demona to continue on her path of genocidal revenge and MacBeth to achieve peace through death. Where they do intend for their own reasons that it end completely with them.

@@feraflauna3238 I think you're missing my point. My point is that Goliath shouldn't have been able to talk down Macbeth. @@furioussherman7265 I see. Goliath was concerned over how MacBeth's need for vengeance consumed his entire life. To where he spent his entire immortal life just looking to die. He never had a chance to ever be. .happy. And that's what Goliath was encouraging him to do. Instead of living hoping to die, try living for once. Goliath has a good heart, but too much of a good heart, towards Demona. He remembers the "wife" he used to have, he remembers his beloved "angel of the night" that stood by his side. To Goliath, it wasn't that long after he woke up that 1,000 year cursed sleep that he reunited with Demona and found out how evil and depraved Demona became. Demona lived 1,000 years in eternal agony and torment. Goliath didn't. A part of him probably still hopes there is a bit of good left in his ex-love where she can be redeemed. To where she would want to be redeemed. He believes in stopping her but he doesn't believe in killing her. However, and the show never got too far before Weisman and the original writers were pulled off the show, Demona's Operation Clean Slate should've changed everything for Goliath. Not only did they narrowly stop her from committing genocide on the entire human race but she nearly killed all the gargoyles with them, including her own daughter. It wasn't just turning an entire city into stone anymore, she very nearly wiped the Earth out of 99.9% of all sentient life. Goliath would have to face really tough questions over if Demona should be kept alive, if they ever captured her, would they be able to contain her. . .forever. . .and if that was truly what was best for even Angela.

+EmptyMan000-I'm sure Weisman and the writers of the show wouldn't consider any of the villains truly "villainous" they were just simply individuals with different motivations and that sure definitely applies to the immortal and morally scrupulous Fey aka Oberon's children. Oberon himself is far from a flawless individual, he is often condescending and snide, believing him to be a God among all Fey and mortal alike and his word is law, the ultimate law, but he is not without his compassion towards "lesser" mortals and he has his own strict code of ethics, of honor he abides by, even if it is not considered fair to anyone else. Puck is a pretty typical trickster, he does things just for the fun of it, whether or not it harms someone else is not his concern or problem, he chases after the thrills in the mortal realm, he didn't even want to return to Avalon because he considered it too boring, but to a few people close to him, the people he considers companions, equals, a true friend such as Xanatos, he takes great pride and loyalty in protecting them, and even when he knew Oberon would exact some kind of punishment for staying with Xanatos, even when he was no longer "obligated" to continue to serve Xanatos, especially if it conflicted with his fealty to Oberon, he decided to stay and protect his friend until the end, accepting Oberon's punishment for defying him. The Weird Sisters' entire motivation to help the Archmage was because humans dared to trespass on their "sacred" territory, it was Oberon's decree that no mortal shall touch the land of Avalon, should not be graced to stay on their land, and it was a decree they were willing to follow to the letter, seeing themselves perhaps as Avalon's greatest guardians and when the Magus, Katherine, Tom, etc. defied their orders and landed on Avalon anyway, the mortal humans broke their most sacred law, so to the Weird Sisters, they were in their rights to use any means within their power to exact revenge. They thought it nothing to meddle in Demona and MacBeth's lives, altering their fates and turning their lives to tragedy, they thought it nothing to side with the Archmage to take revenge, on the humans, perhaps even kill if they needed to those who trespassed on their sacred isle, since they view themselves above mortal concerns, they just don't really care that much about mortal lives, only Fey, much like people view ants with passive indifference and sometimes, mortals can be proven useful if they can be manipulated, controlled. Sometimes their motivations allied themselves with the gargoyles'-the Weird Sisters needed to collect Demona and MacBeth to prepare for the assault on the mortals in Avalon so they helped Goliath foil Demona's plan for the purpose of collecting her and MacBeth. And sometimes their motivations didn't align at all-they had no qualms with Goliath beforehand but when he decided to get involved to save the mortals on Avalon, he became one of their biggest enemies and when Oberon awakened from his sleep, they thought it nothing to essentially rat everyone out who was living on Avalon because the mortals broke their law and if they couldn't exact justice, perhaps Oberon himself could.

It's interesting that the Macbeth in Gargoyles is actually more historically accurate than Shakespeare's interpretation.

@bigevil1001 Yes, Macbeth ruled Scotland from 1040 to 1057. His reign as king was actually quite stable and peaceful for the time period. He wasn't a murdering psychopath like in the play.

@@GregXB3 "I'm just so tired." Quoted by Macbeth in Disney's Gargoyles The true reason why Macbeth wanted to kill Demona is because Macbeth wanted to die because he wanted to be reunited with his beloved wife and their son who both died over 900 years ago. Macbeth misses his family that much. There was a Man in The Bible named Methuselah who died at the age of 969 years old. If I was that blessed to live to be that old I would end up saying the same thing as Macbeth when Macbeth said: "I'm just so tired."

Its a shame they cant make a live action trilogy or 4 or 5 movie series about Gargoyles its so many characters to use the top 3 most interesting are probably Demona, Xanatos, & MacBeth I wouldn't mind having to see the Gargoyles fight against Oberon in a live action movie

I was an 80s kid, but even then I loved this show as a teenager, so much depth and great writing. I often wondered, how strong was the curse on Mcbeth that he couldn't kill himself? Sure the weird sisters made it that only the other could kill the other, but what if mcbeth jumped into a volcano, or a garbage press?

He would probably be magically pulled out and healed. Or he would float to the surface and eventually leave due to the massive pain. And Demona would feel that pain halfway across the world. Ouch.
