Maybe I tried to do too much here! (Tell me if I did, or did not in the comments!)
I wanted to give a full overview of the performance of the new Apple 13” MacBook M1 systems released at the end of 2020 and selling into 2021 and beyond.
I hope this will be a buying “bible” as such for anyone interested in the MacBook M1 systems for home, office productivity, audio and video production.
I debunk myths around M1 Air vs M1 Pro differences and show true live performance demos in all areas for both 8GB and 16GB RAM memory variants.
Of course, by the end of 2021 we will see the new M1X and/or M2 systems in new 14” and 16” form factors.
They will have more cores, more memory and more ports.
These will be even more performant but of course, they will be more expensive. You have to get in at some point and at some price tag.
You can always wait and pay more for something greater, bigger, heavier and …. “better”. It is all about the money and when you want to spend it.

Hands down the most comprehensive review of these M1s. I love your approach to outlining information; very easy to follow, and your insights into what is important to consider vs. irrelevant info was great. As a voice actor working with simple audio production the majority of the time and the occasional larger scale production, I've been specifically looking at the thermals and throttling on the air, but 99% of the videos I've found have focused on video production. This was super relevant to me and helped me in my decision between the two machines. Cheers, and subbed.

@@MarkPayneAudio Ι would like to ask for your opinion on something. I am currently situated in Italy and have access to a US military base through which I can purchase a Macbook Pro M1 with 8GB of RAM and 265 GB SSD. They only bring this particular model and do not bring the Macbook Air M1. With me being a regular user accessing the Internet and working mainly with Microsoft Office programs would you say that this Macbook pro version which is sold for 1289 dollars aka 1060 euros is a good deal for me rather than purchasing the Macbook Air from the local Italian Apple store which will require 1159 euros for its basic version (8GB of RAM and 256 GB of SSD memory)? Thank you for this comprehensive review Mark. I intend to use my machine predominantly for music production. My projects are normally quite beefy on Logic Pro (+30 tracks, buses, large sample libraries, waves, izotope, omnisphere, analog labs). So the 16GB is a must have for me. I already see the limits of my current 8GB MBP. My burning issue was whether I was going to run into throttling with an 8 core 16GB MacBook Air. I think your review basically made the decision for me. I’ll be fine with the Air. From everything else I’ve read and watched on the Pro, those fans only seem to really kick in after long resource intense sessions like 3D rendering. I usually take breaks every 2-3 hours while making music. So again, I think I’ll be fine with the Air. Plus I really hate the touchbar.
@halfblind9860

Hey did you end up getting the air? II'm also really curious about the thermals after long sessions. I can have logic open and running for 5 hours at a time so I really want to know if the Air will do it for me.

@@halfblind9860 I ended up saving some more cash to get the 14” M1 Pro. It’s been 7 months and I haven’t heard the fans once. Maybe the M2 Air will work for you. I haven’t done a comparison, but on paper it seems like a better buy than the M1 Air

Thanks for the well done video. I just ordered the Air with 16GBs. My feeling, having worked with Adobe Pr, is that Adobe products run better and with less crashes (virtually none on Macs) with as much memory as you can give them, and they work poorly and do tend to crash if they run low on memory. With an iMac 2017 with 40GBs RAM & 4GB video card, 4k editing is fine and never crashes. That was not true with 16 or less. No doubt Adobe will do their best to maximize RAM usage on the new chips when they release it. So I agree with your comment that if you are a pro looking for a field machine that can do editing but don't need it to be heavy or "Pro", the Air seems to be an excellent choice. The amount of times I need to do serious editing in the field is minimal, so the Air with 16 should be ok. Apple has created a very price competitive machine but to be clear, 256GB is not enough since you can't upgrade it, and by the time you buy 16Bs and 1TB of HD space, along with Applecare (IMHO a must on a laptop), you are up to $2000+ USD. However, as of this comment, the MB Pro with same config is essentially the same price. Without more TB ports, i can't see why I would choose it.

Thanks for your patient explanations. I’ve seen a few now, this was a very helpful addition. I’m gonna wait for the 2022 Air. I think I’m leaning towards the smallest configuration for my needs, which are not that great but I’m completely immersed in the Apple ecosystem at home. My big hesitancy has so far been future-proofing, but I can see from your video and others that this new Apple silicon has so much more power that I’ll likely be good for 5-6-7 years even with 8 gigs + 512 gigs, close to the minimum specs for the Air, and it’ll probably set me back 1200 bucks. No tax if I drive across the state border to a Portland apple store (from Washington State) :-)

This is the best review I have ever seen and I'm glad to have watched it! I have just some doubts about buying the MacBook Air 8 GB - 512 GB SSD or the MacBook Pro 8 GB - 256 GB SSD, for almost the same price! I'm mostly interested in using Microsoft Office package and I would not use the pc for video content. What do you suggest me to buy? Thank you

Really, I would go for the larger SSD. I think that is the better price balance.

@@MarkPayneAudio Yes, I have watched your video but still just wanna make sure if the Macbook Pro cooling system really helps or the extra Ram is more important. Also, is the cooling fan really necessary to maintain the productivity of the laptop for the long run like for 4-5 years. As I am planning to buy my first apple laptop next month and want it to be a best investment 😅

Would be interested in that too. Do you think the average CPU requirements increase when virtual instruments and sample libraries (e.g. NI Una Corda) are used? And do you think the Air would thermal throttle under these conditions? Fantastic video by the way!

What about short term? Any thoughts on buying a base system M1 now for pro work along side current set up and saving for next gen Apple silicon. This is the path I have chosen. Although I must say that for 90% of current tasks are just better on the base M1. No doubt even the base model M1 will be useful for many tasks, many years. I love the idea of having a powerful Max around.

MacBook Air 13" (late 2020) or MacBook Pro 13" (late 2020)? Both have the same spec: - M1 8 Cores 16 Neural Engines - 1TB SSD - 16GB RAM but MB Air is 25% cheaper during #BlackFriday at some stores.
