I'm a long time PC user. In fact I've never owned a single Apple product, not anything until about 6 months ago when I bought an M2 Pro mini. The performance just absolutely smokes any comparable PC price wise. There is a bit of a learning curve to the OS like the window snapping and even icon snapping but I've actually grown to prefer the Mac OS. Windows just seems fiddly with too many layers of windows to change a setting. A big plus is not having to deal with drivers for hardware, just plug something in and it works.
@PhilKnall
@PhilKnall 3 ай бұрын
Yeah it does have it's positives for sure. And the performance just blows any PC I've had out of the water, especially at that price point. I still personally prefer windows in many aspects, because of the choices it gives me, but sometimes they're absolute overkill for sure 😅

I bought a MacBook Pro 16 M1 the base config with 1TB Ram, almost a year ago. 1.When it comes to performance on video editing it blows away any windows laptop and it does that on battery while windows laptops, some twice as expensive, are plugged in with fans almost to the max. The hardware is amazing, the fact that it runs any app as fast on battery as when it's plugged in is something windows laptops cannot touch. 2.The battery life is amazing, it really can be used for a full work day. I still have 100% health after a year 3. The screen, speakers, and touchpad are the best on the market, the keyboard is very good but not the best Cons: 1. The upgrades of storage and ram are very, very expensive, almost to the point that I would call it thievery 2. The OS compatibility is the worst I've seen, Linux and windows are more backward compatible than anything Apple has 3. The look and feel of the OS feels like windows 10 years ago 4. Default apps like Finder, Calculator, and even the clipboard are very poorly implemented. You need to install apps for basic tasks. It made me appreciate windows as an OS more 5. No delete key, you have to press Fn + backspace 6. Misc: You don't see transfer speeds when copying stuff, any peripheral that you plug in, must be plugged in AFTER you've logged in, window default sizes are too small; even tough you see an app, you may be logged in another app and some control's don't work. Bottom line: Apple, for me is like a convertible. For some tasks, it's brilliant, but for most, you are better off with windows. Right now I have two machines, I cannot live with just macOS after 20+ years of windows LE: If Qualcomm's Snapdragon Elite performance is as good as they say, and if battery life is as good as an MacBook Pro and apps run as fast on battery..I would go back to windows immediately

Very good summary, I'm with you on almost all of these. I'm sticking with this solely based on the fact that I'm doing a lot of video editing lately, If I had the option of the same speed in a windows machine at the same price and a similar form factor, I'd definitely want that. @pauuuuul87

I transferred over to Macs when Windows 10/11 started integrating advertising into the start menu and taskbar. I don't mind paying the 'Apple tax' to remove those horrible ads. I have gotten used to MacOS over the last six months - the only thing I found very difficult was trying to use Pages & Numbers instead of Word, Excel etc. (and in the end I just signed up to M365 suite). I also have an iPhone so the integration of the whole ecosystem makes each part work better together. You just can't get a Windows laptop like the MacBook Air.

Thanks for the video. After about as many years in the Windows realm I have bought a Macbook Pro M2 Pro - primarily for my Lightroom work. It is about the same specification as your Mackbook Air. My most recent machines have been Surface Pro's - a 4, a 5 and an 8 (which I still have). As you have discovered, it is way faster than the Surface Pro 8 I was using - in Lightroom. My learning curve with the Mac is very steep and I am often seeking hints and tips online which slows down my current productivity overall. I am determined, though, to keep pressing on with it. They are very expensive here in Australia and it is not just something I can abandon.
@PhilKnall

Totally. I'm constantly searching for shortcuts and the like. But the sheer performance, and, as you mentioned, the cost, makes it worth powering through. Simply not having to deal with Proxies for video editing is already a great timesaver.

You can resize the dock, it’s too big by default, I agree. You can also remap all the keys to be where you like in macOS. I remap the capslock key on all my macs. Scroll direction is a pain, but Bettermouse fixes that - several apps exist to fix this flaw. Window snap was patented by Microsoft I believe, which is perhaps why Apple don’t include it. Finder has “go to folder” off the menu, so as a power user you’ll appreciate that.

I was born when the PC started making it to homes and schools. The first computer I touched was an  Lisa II in pre-school, then in grade school I used Windows 3.1, in middle school I touched another Apple computer, not sure of the model but it was a Mac. Then just before I got into HS I touched my second Windows computer, 95, got it for my 16th birthday, and in HS we only had Windows 95 computers. I decided to go back to MacOS when the M1 came out as I hated Windows 8/8.1 and 10.

Very similar views here.. I even have the Surface Pro 8 that I'm selling now. I bought a $275 damaged m1 air a few weeks ago, it still worked but was a little inconsistent, I'm also a long time PC user.. never owned a mac, I bought this one because I didn't want to sink money into something I didnt think I'd like at all.. my 1st pc was a Packard Bell 486 from 1992'ish. This Macbook Air absolutely destroys any pc laptop I've ever owned in just about every way. I also installed Parallels and Windows 11 with no issues and it literally feels like I have a 2 in 1 device.. Windows runs better on it than on my SP8. It's absolutely crazy. The battery life is way better than any Laptop I've owned prior. I've owned several Microsoft Surface devices and design is great but the hardware ruins the experience with running hot.. fans.. inconsistency in whether it will have a charge when I start it.. and the slowdown when running on battery. The only thing I miss about my SP8 is the 120hz screen. I did occasionally like to use my SP8 as a tablet but it was so rare I don't think it will be something I'll miss.
@PhilKnall

Yeah... The tablet, touch, and pen functionality are the ones I'll miss but as you said it's niche use. The sp8 was much heavier than my previous sp5, so I used it as a tablet much less.

spot on observations. I have to use Windows for work and my Macbook Air is for personal use. The biggest advantage of Mac OS is continuity and seamless integration with other Apple devices - iPhone, AirPods, HomePods, Apple TV, etc. I actually now prefer Mac OS customization options vs. Windows, it. What drives me crazy is that I need apps for very basic functions that Windows provides - snipping tool (Shottr), Cmd X and window management. Also, I have to remap keys so the same wireless keyboard ii used seamlessly between Mac and Windows - I prefer same hotkeys. It’s getting better but far from perfect yet. I’s say it may take over a year of regular use to truly get comfortable with Mac OS for long time Windows users. But it’s worth it.
@joesalyers
@joesalyers 3 ай бұрын
Shift command 4 can take a picture you choose the size of, shift command 3 will take a pic of the entire screen, and shift command 5 will screen record a video in MacOS. Command w closes windows and command Q quits and application. These are common to all Unix/BSD operating systems. But Windows for some reason didn't want to use the same key commands as everyone else since they were the most used operating system, and even Linux had to figure out what to do with the "windows key" and remapped it to the "Super Key" back in the early 2000s. LOL So I'm sure it has been annoying if you are coming from using a Windows PC for years. But the best way to really get around in MacOS is get a key command pic from google and keep it on your desktop for a quick reference until it becomes natural to you. I know when Apple moved from OS9 to OS X 99% of Mac users had the same issue. But Mac OS has tools like snipping tool built in without a 3rd party app needed. Cheers!
@alexsfca
@alexsfca 3 ай бұрын
@@joesalyers Well, I much prefer Alt S as my the hotkey for snipping vs Cmd+Shift+number, not to mention that that screenshot I take with Shottr shows up in the middle and not in the right bottom corner. But even more so, I don’t to use hotkeys even, I can click with a mouse on the shottr shortcut on top to snip. How would I do that with built-in feature? Must we always remember and rely on keyboard hotkeys with Mac OS?
@joesalyers
@joesalyers 3 ай бұрын
@@alexsfca You could go to your utilities folder and put the screenshot app in the dock. Screenshot records the screen and takes screenshots that way you can just use a mouse. But one thing to remember Mac OS is Unix and like all Unix and Linux systems key commands are vital. But Mac OS has a feature in the settings where you can change "hot keys" Key commands to whatever you want. Just go to the system settings scroll down to keyboard, then keyboard short cuts. But yea for any modern computer system Key commands are really the easiest way to get around. Cheers!

well, I tried your advise and use MacOS screenshot and it just does’t let me to freely select the area, instead a square/rectangle pops up and I have to adjust by dragging, a far cry the flexibility of Windows snipping tool and Shottr (which works the same as Windows). I tried but hate the built-in snapshot. It’s a shame - one of the most basic OS tools used multiple times a day.@@joesalyers

Phil, thanks for your honest review. I thought your review was very peculiar. If you didn't explicitly say that you liked the performance and were sticking with the MBA M2, I would have thought that you hated the laptop. Really all your comments boil down to familiarity and lack of familiarity. I got my first Mac SE 37 years ago. If I have to use a Windows based computer, I am helpless. I can't launch an app, find a file, or anything. It is like visiting a foreign country where not only do I not speak the language, I can't read the writing. Your question: Command+Shift+G, then type "/" will bring you directly to your root directory. A lot of issues you complained about can be changed in various settings. Lastly, you didn't like the keyboard. Universally that is a feature most users single out for being fantastic Chacun à son goût.

The Silicon Macs are fast...on MacOS only. Not sure that is a big plus. For anything else like Windows X86 or Linux, you got to run under emulation. Not so good. My concern relates to how Macs now swap to SSD when memory constrained. That doesn't sound like a good idea. You burn out that SSD you are up shit-creek. The Silicon Macs are great for youtubers who do video stuff. Apple was smart to target that crowd.

I've been on Macs since 2008, however this move only happened when I stopped online gaming as Windows is king for any of that. Ahhh, the days of Quake clans online. Epic fun. I'll stop now or I'll end up getting boring about ISDN lines and 2x 64k 😆 Cheers 👍🏻 EDIT: you have a different keyboard layout on that one as well. That is not a normal caps lock position for e.g. UK keyboard. So that's why you'll be struggling with that side of things.

Early 2021 my beloved Latitude E6420 fan/heatsink combo died again.. I didn’t wanna keep repairing a 12 year old computer and caved. In early 2021 if you had no budget and wanted to buy new.. that M1 MacBook Air was unreal. I’d never had a MacBook but I did have an iPhone and iPad. I had a thought.. “I’ll buy a base M1 MacBook Air as a placeholder til the 12th gen Intel stuff drops” cause at Best Buy with tax it was only $970 So, that was three years ago. I never did go buy another PC. This thing is miles nicer than what I was used to on a PC. The build quality too.. insane. I absolutely love this thing. I would rather have the M2 cause you get an extra 100 nits brightness and MagSafe but.. I can live without those things. On the M1 Air.. the screen and speakers and build are so much nicer than you’ll find on a comparable PC. And it’s insanely stable.
