Haha, this is what repair is all about. the troubleshooting part got me into repair. I understand plenty were a bit disoriented by what's going on, rewatch the video and pause to understand the thought process of fault-finding. now when it comes to the repair: something is pulling down the 3.3V SSD_Enable rail to 0.5-0.2V now Alex notices there is a second path for 3.3V SSD_Enable and opened the gate of this closed path by adding the 100K resistor

Alex I always enjoy you videos. I was able to for your logic to find the problem, however in this case is not clear why you had to add an extra 100K resistor to enable the SSD power. I understand what it does, but was the cause of the problem?. Surely the 100K resistor did not run away by its own!.Why did it stop working? Thanks and keep doing what you do

''something'' is pulling down the 3.3V SSD_Enable rail to 0.5-0.2V now Alex notices there is a second path for 3.3V SSD_Enable and opened the gate of this closed path by adding the 100K resistor. no the 100k was never there before, and your confusion comes from the fact that alex didn't "Fix'' the problem ofthe first path he instead forced 3.3_enable signal onto an other path
@dansam42
@dansam42 2 жыл бұрын
I don't understand the problem or the solution. I guess he's saying that the resistor was damaged in some way but don't we EXPECT a voltage drop across a resistor? Additionally, was the added resistor placed in parallel or in series with the allegedly damaged one? I suppose knowing what voltage level to expect for a valid enable signal helps....
@antbuch8699
@antbuch8699 2 жыл бұрын
He "stole" the 3.3v needed to activate the chip that send 3.3v to the ssd, I'm not sure about it maybe someone expert can explain that better

It was a nice logical chase for the problem, but indeed, if the resistor was good it seems to me it would still not work, maybe a trace problem... Anyway, it worked, and the valuable information here is the logical thinking.

as I mentioned before, same source voltage (3.3v), not the same line ( different states ). The best way to understand what's going on is to download schematics and board view software it's freely available on the internet Good luck.
@asv5769
@asv5769 2 жыл бұрын
It is because these two resistors (actually one resistor and other is a placeholder) use different 3.3 V to power SSD drive. You can find the schematics easily, just type 820-00165. Originally, on the motherboard was only R1696, and it used 3V3_S3 (3.3V in S3 state) to power SSD. R1620, which was omitted is supposed to use 3V3_S0 (3.3 V from S0 state). When Alex soldered R1620 on the board, this resistor provided 3.3V to power SSD but from S0 (working state of the laptop). So, the primary fault was not "large enough" to catch the source PP3V3_S0 (or better, this fault didn't prevent laptop to enter S0 state).

Now I don't worry, I actually have the next 2 weeks off, most customers are happy to wait until come back and understand. Only this week a customer bought a laptop to me and the next day he dropped down dead!
