You sir, are a scholar and a gentleman! Thank you for this great fix. My 2016 Macbook Pro keyboard has been misbehaving for months with non-functioning keys (including the command key). It was driving me crazy and interfering with my work productivity as I had to do everything twice-over. I followed your directions and - so far anyway - everything works again. So nice of you to share this!

This actually worked. My space bar had been giving me fits for the past month and I was to the point where I was considering taking it to an Apple store to get it fixed. Thankfully I looked on KZfaq and found this video. It’s a pretty easy fix and I appreciate you taking the time to make this video. Awesome stuff.

I approached the bed, gently sat on it and I reached for her shoulder to pull her closer to me. She stirred and woke up. She asked what's up. I told her, you know, the first time I saw you, I was watching a video and left it playing to get my self a sandwich then went to the store to get some mayo then I got distracted by life that I forgot to finish the video. She said, you know what, I've been wondering about a weird noise in your night drawer. So we opened that drawer, and lo and behold, there's my phone and this video still has two minutes of play time on it.!

Worked like a charm for me! I have a 2017 MacBook Pro, and when I went into hardware - controllers it said "This computer doesn’t contain any Controller devices." I tried it pressing option, control, and shift while holding power key for 10 seconds and it worked. My "I" key was sticking like crazy!! Feels like a brand new keyboard now! I will have to get some compressed air to maintain the cleanliness under the keys but this was a god send! Thank you!

It works!!!! My ESC key was not working at all, I thought nothing could be done to fix it but all I had to do was shut down and restart my laptop and the key is back to functioning! Thank you!

15" 2017 MacBook w/ *T1* security chip. Not T2. Holding Ctrl-Opt-Shift will not allow apple to appear OR disappear when you hold Power. Apple appears only when keys are released and boot begins. Holding Power alone gives same result. In both cases spacebar issue persists. Any ideas? Rest of keys work fine.

I've always wondered if there's any kind of software to fix this, it doesnt seem very hard to create a program, which detects when the key failed, and correct it. This method is even easier

Great Idea! Built in Keyboard and trackpad in my MacBook air 2013 was not working. Used external keyboard and mouse. Used this idea and built in keyboard as well as trackpad became ok.The only difference was while I pressed power on button apple logo came and it booted continuously. As soon as booting completed I released the power on button. Every thing become ok. Thanking you for yr post.

I found you in a google search and I'M SO HAPPY I DID!!! I have the same T2 controller and it worked perfectly, even without cleaning out with canned air. I've always been worried that that would push dust even further into the works. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.

What if it still doesn't work? I have the same MacBook Air as you and cant get the keyboard to work--the trackpad is fine. Issue started when my spacebar became stuck. Took it to Apple and they want $500 to replace keyboard. I'm a lawyer and have all my docs on this computer backed-up on LaCie. Should I bite the bullet and buy a new MacBook or pay to have this 2018 model repaired? Working with an exterior keyboard is a nightmare. Any suggestions on a model that gives me the same set-up as my Mac?

Hi Dave I have exactly the same problem with my MacbookPro, the space bar shift hardly ever works its very frustrating. I have followed your video instructions and just want to make sure that my understanding is correct. Its a Macbook Pro that I bought about 3 years ago with an Apple M1 Pro chip, so must I use the second option for that then - Control, Option, Shift, then power, hold all for 10 seconds, then release, then power again, is that correct? 6 minute video that shouldn't have been more than 1 minute ... The boy seems to love to hear himself talk... 1) Turn off power, 2) hold power button for 10sec, 3) release when apple comes on then goes off, 4) turn power back on.

I had security chip T1. Big problem with the "h's" and the "b"s being stuck badly. Fix definitely improved things. Not perfect, but much improved. Thanks much.

Their reset methods involved using the keyboard which of course wouldnt work because the keyboard is the problem right? Duh. You saved me some major headaches to get this fixed. Wait a second. That actually worked! I just purchased a new Macbook pro and often(most always) when I type I would get a random period. Now no more. This sentence was typed with no period. Crazy that such simple fix worked. I am still sceptical but time will tell. Thanks!

I've taken my MacBook 2 times for repairing, they told me they have change the keyboard. However I'm is still having this problem with the keys constantly repeating. I will give a shot at this solution when I reach home. I believe at is point it is more a software issue rather than a hardware one, for example if I attach an external keyboard same thing happens. So your solutions sounds promising!!!

Think that is maybe resetting PRAM actually. The SMC reset involves multiple keyboard buttons on a T2.

Hi Dave - i have a similar issue with my left Shift key, BUT when I go into System Report - Hardware - Controller menu there is no hardware version listed at all! just the words "This computer doesn’t contain any Controller devices." so now what do i do? [you can see how intermittent my shift key is behaving by lack of capitals etc].

Did the keyboard issue go away after the reset? Do you recommend buying this computer now? or it has too many keyboard/other hardware issues to be a reliable computer? Thanks.

Thanks, it worked but after a few minutes the machine disabled the key again, in my case is the number "3" key, I did reset sMC and also nvram, I'll try to do it once again jic and see how it goes.

Thissss did not work for me with a different version of MacBook Pro. My S key still skipss and iss unreponsive or writes additional "s" letters. I have to press hard to get the s to work or it makes extra letters. But glad it worked for some people. I have an external wireless keyboard and the letter S works fine, so maybe I do need compressed air? Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you. :)

my space key was continuously clicking on it's own but the key itself didn't feel stuck or anything. this tip wasn't working until I realized... my bluetooth keyboard sitting in the closet was connected and the space key was pushed down!! Haha be sure to check your bluetooth devices, they could be the culprit

You rock! I was so depressed because of left CTRL key not working in my MacBook Pro 2016 and I did not want to break any keys. I fixed it by shutdown the Mac and then pressing left CTRL+ left alt (option) + left shift + Power key for 10 seconds or more; 7 seconds are enough. Finally, I pressed the power button again and the magic happened. No CTRL issue.

Thank you, that fixed my issue. One of my keys ("N") was only working if you pressed it harder the the other keys. I did a SMC reset, and ow the keys all work with the same pressure.

I reckon my left shift key is having the same problem. It wasn't dead, but I have to press it hard (like with consciousness, normally, a shift key works as far as you press it, but my Macbook Pro Mid-2017 need to like PUSH it down HARD), so it can do its work.

Maybe it works only for the space key. It did not fix my other double typing keys. I have same chip.

Had mine 2 years, dead keyboard, SMC reset does nothing. USB KB works fine. Reset back to factory, cannot go any further as I cannot enter owner details.

my macbook is from 2015. It seems like the very top row of keys doesn't function anymore so I cannot adjust the screen brightness, volume, etc.I followed your video but do not have a controller option. Please advise.

Damn. He hits his keys hard. I thought I was bad. This keyboard has such little travel, that I have had to learn to type more gently. I miss the dumb comma key all the time because the travel is so small, it changes the distance of my reach and messes me up. I loved typing on the old selectric typewriters because it was so physical. The old original IBM click keyboards weren't bad either. Keyboards just keep getting worse.
