This job is a hecking marathon. The basic premise is the same as the MacBook Air I did recently, but these 15" Retinas are a lot more intimidating.
Amazon Associate links for stuff I used in this video. I usually get my keyboards from eBay, but you can find them on Amazon too.

@@TheSpotify95 It's not bad taking a MacBook Pro apart - things just fit and there are a lot of guides to help, if you are having problems... 🙂 I'll take Torx over Philips anyway - much better. It's all T5 inside this MBP except for the display-hinges... ;-)

Thanks for sharing. I watched along while replacing my keyboard for the second time. With the first, the key labels were wearing away after only a year and the capslock LED never worked. First was from talaptopparts, this new one is from it-screens - capslock LED is working this time and keys seem more sturdy more large keys have metal cross bars.

Thank you so much for recording this video. I am now typing on my new keyboard. I bodged it too! I didnt realise I had a US layout macbook and bought a UK layout keyboard so I just used tin clips to snip out the bit of the case that splits the enter key! I think I missed plugging in the old backlight though! I put it in but it doesnt work and I dnt think I plugged it in!! Stilll its a VAST improvement over using a USB keyboard!! Thanks again, you made this pretty compex process V simple!

Nice video as usual, you have a calming voice like Big Clive. That unit has definitely had liquid ingress you can see where it came in, I was thinking I have not had a keyboard fail on one of these without someone giving it a drink. That is why you have the weird shape of dust on the heat sink.

Thanks very much for the video. I am now typing on my newly installed keyboard, mid 2015 macbook pro 15". Some things: first, be careful following this video because he has to back out at least once (fan shrouds) if not more so if you follow along and are not aware you will also have to back out. Having titles on the screen warning of this would be helpful. My keyboard had METAL rivets. Some of the rivets came out when I pulled the old keyboard out but some remained. I used a pair of flush cutters to grab the rivets and pop them out. I was able to get all but 2 which i then sheared off flush with the case. If you dont put all the screws into the keyboard you risk some keys feeling soft and also softening over time. It's better to put all the keyboard screws in to ensure all keys are held in place. You do not want to do this job again! It took me 3 hours never having done it before. Also, I got a $15 electric screwdriver (mini) that was indispensable for this job especially the >100 keyboard screws. I would recommend such a tool.

25:50 i do that with every laptop i trash, i take out all the screws, all the clips, all the wires, the screen (for the cfl backlight) and i trash the rest, its basically an empty shell with a loose motherboard, battery and trackpad in it, all the rest i keep, and yes, i replaced the cfl backlight in a very nice condition PowerBook G3 Pismo, because the backlight of those powerbooks will go pink when the backlight starts to die, and that pink hue will get worse over time, and in some cases, it will not go away when the laptop warmed up, like my model did, so i took it appart, and i replaced the cfl tube, and i was quite succesfull, its not a factory job, i have a lil bit of a brighter portion on the first 3mm of the screen, but for the rest it lights up nice and evenly, so its way better than the pink tinted backlight!

Thank you for posting this video! I replaced mine yesterday night because I spilled a sugar drink on it (MBP Retina 15" 2015 A1398) and you provided a lot of useful tips on how to do it! I am a total beginner when it comes to repair electronic devices (I'm just used to clean the fans once in a while) and it took me 5 hours, but I did it and it works just fine. Just a couple more tips for those who have the same model as mine: 1) You can't separate the heatsink from the CPU/motherboard on this model, it seems to be soldered (I didn't wanted to force on it, maybe you can but at your own risks). 2) I'd like to put an emphasis on the "wear gloves" things. The sides of the keyboard ARE sharp (got a couple cuts on my fingers, nothing unbearable but it is annoying). 3) I highly recommend to use a pair of pliers to remove the rivets, as shown in the video. I didn't have one, I had to remove them with a flat screwdriver and a hammer, but it cut some rivets instead of getting them to fly around the room.

Electronic parts still hold charge , even if you are disconnecting the battery... you know they did it for the pleasure of making the process of changing a keyboard difficult to the user wen they riveted the damn thing instead of securing it with clips and 4 screws. and is the same with every apple product, i have 2 dell laptops: my work computer is an old Latitude E5430, the keyboard can be remove withing 3 to 5 minutes, and my main one is a inspiron 15 5558, you can pull that keyboard in seconds. on the other hand to remove my wife's MBP keyboard i have to pull the battery and main board out, is a 10 to 15 minutes job. great video brother, we are learning together, thanks to your channel, and many other technicians like you channels i was able to fix my wife's MBP kernel panic and my ps3 hdmi controller crazy short to ground.

Ugh. I'm glad none of my laptops have ever looked like that inside. Also, wasn't it so much easier back in the day when to remove a keyboard all you had to do was undo a couple of screws and lift it out without stripping the whole thing down? In fact on my old iBook G3 you only have to pull back two sprung plastic clips and the whole thing just pops out. My God though it's a pain in the arse to strip down when you have to replace anything other than that.

Don't know if you saw Louis Rossmann solder a screw mount back on using a 260W soldering gun. He couldn't use hot air due to having melty stuff too close to the mount. Sorry but I have spent the last 60+ minutes looking at the videos but I can't find it at the moment. The gist of the "technique" was to put some solder on the board where the mount needed to be relocated, place the screw mount over the hole and then get the solder gun to make contact with the screw mount. The wattage of the solder gun overcame the mount and the board's ability to absorb the heat so the solder under the screw mount actually melted. The melty bits, it may even have been the PCH but Mr Memory isn't cooperating at the moment, were not damaged and the repair was successful. Here is a method of removing the MacBook batteries that Apple have _welded_ to the case with adhesive that may work for you. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/odVgkpmjvrnGnps.html Hope you find it useful.

Hey there. I really enjoyed this video. It helped me greatly. Thank you! I have one question. The keyboard I ordered for my MBP Retina 15” mid-2015 model came with a little blue sticker on the keyboard connection terminus…the part that inserts into the logic board connector. Are we supposed to remove that sticker when we install the keyboard, or leave it on? It covers the little metallic wires on the keyboard connector terminus. So it’s confusing to know what to do with it. Thanks!
@mudphud2b
@mudphud2b 2 жыл бұрын
I figured out the following on my own: 1. I needed to remove the blue sticker from the end of my keyboard ribbon’s connector because with this sticker on the connector, the connector didn’t fit properly in the logic board socket. However, without the sticker on the end of the keyboard connector, the end of the keyboard connector itself also wouldn’t fit in said socket. 2. So what I did was reattach the blue sticker to the underside of the end of my keyboard connector. And then, I trimmed the excess plastic from the blue sticker. So I made the size of the blue sticker match the size of the connector it was covering. That worked. 3. The only way I could get the keyboard connector into the logic board socket stably was to disconnect the logic board screws, and pull the board up about 1.5 inches from the keyboard, without taking the board out from beneath the edge of the installed battery. Then, I inserted the keyboard ribbon’s connector, with trimmed, blue plastic sticker attached to underside, into the connector on the logic board in mid air and closed the lever arm on the logic board socket. To have enough keyboard ribbon length to do this, I lifted the keyboard ribbon out from under the logic board, and rested it on top of the logic board, under the front edge of the battery. That worked well. And I was able to not only boot the computer (whereas before I couldn’t, because new keyboard wasn’t working), but also use 100% of the keys on the iFixit keyboard. Everything worked correctly. So that’s the solution for mid-2015 MBP Retina 15 inch.

And if you take out the trackpad from a macbook, normally its a pain in the rear end to get it lined up, well, install it, than when the keyboard is facing you, you can adjust the trackpad in the perfect position, but offcourse, when you turn the laptop around, the trackpad will shift and slide, just put 2 small pieces of tape on the left and right side of the trackpad and the palmrest, than you can turn the laptop over to tighten the screws, and when you are done, you will see that the trackpad stays in position!

A better screwdriver can sometimes get purchase on a bad screw... if it's completely demolished, you'll have to get a dremel and cut a slot into the head. This will likely cut the back case slightly, but if you're careful it can at least be a neat 'scratch'.

You can, but I strongly suggest either removing the screen (it's just another six bolts at the hinges, and the little hinge covers next to them) or open the screen and hang off the desk. While doing this job, you'll often be pressing down reasonably hard, so there's a danger of cracking the screen. Not heard of it happening, but IMHO it's better to get it out the way so you can be as rough as you like on the chassis.

Hi there, I love the channel! I have an A1502 Late 13 Pro whose trackpad recently died almost instantly, and the keyboard is on its way out (Often I have to press a key multiple times). Do you think I should replace the trackpad/keyboard or have you seen this before and a larger issue may be at play?
@Adamant_IT
@Adamant_IT 4 жыл бұрын
Hard to say really... it's possible that humidity or something has gotten to both the keyboard and trackpad. They're both fairly big jobs to replace. I would probably test a different keyboard by connected it while the laptop is open on the bench, so I can see if the new keyboard will work before I strip the laptop down. If that keyboard responds just fine, I'd go ahead and replace both KB and TP.

@@Adamant_IT On these 13 models, the flex cable that connects the trackpad to the motherboard is under the battery, which is unfortunate. I could replace this cable and the trackpad, however I do not think I could reliably complete the keyboard replacement. I was reading on IFix forums, where one user suggested that a virus could mess with trackpad/keyboard function. In your experience, is this plausible?
@Adamant_IT
@Adamant_IT 4 жыл бұрын
Seems like a long-shot. A format and wipe would answer that. Do a time machine backup, then factory reset and wipe everything. If the problem has disappeared, then it was a software issue or virus. If the problem hasn't disappeared, restore the backup and you're back where you started.

Impressive work. I have a question. I've brought my MBP 2015 to Apple for a change of battery. They changed the whole topcase and I don't like the the way the keys of the keyboard are now sinking into the chassis... it used to be perfect just before they started the repair (a pressed space bar came just at the level of the chassis and now it's way below the chassis, which is uncomfortable imo). They just tell me they can try other keyboards, but it will mostly be the same result. So I asked them to put back the old keyboard without the battery. They told me it's not possible for "safety reason"... What do you think? Do you think it's doable?
@Adamant_IT
@Adamant_IT 3 жыл бұрын
That's BS. The battery is totally removable. I did like, three last week. But Apple don't believe in repair. You could ask them to put the old keyboard and batt back in, but I'll be surprised if they still have it... If they do, you could then take it to an independent shop and just get the battery replaced. But you're stuck between a rock and a hard place here, given that you're already this far in.

You and me both tbh... I've been doing this 10 years and I'm still making up the price as I go along for this kind of work. My basic flat-fee is £50 labour. I quoted £70 for this (£50 labour £20 parts) because the last MBA I did wasn't a massive job. The cleaning and other bits, plus the additional time it takes to film everything made this a much bigger job. But it's debatable if that's the customer's problem or not. If I did another one of these tomorrow and wasn't filming, I'd probably be done in an hour.

So Apple can sell you a new one , they want NOTHING repaired. They solder shit in and pour epoxy on stuff so you will have to buy new. They go after people repairing this crap. Bottom line Apple is full of greedy assholes , the walled-garden , It's from Jobs the #1 asshole of them all.

Greetings from India! I would really appreciate if you give some advice. I have MacBook Pro 15 inch Retina display of 2013 model. Some key on keyboard doesn’t work and it is very hard to turn it on. It turns on after trying to it turn it on for at least 30 times. The technician is saying it could be logic board problem and asking me to give declaration of it as a dead laptop. He says while fixing it problem may get bigger. Thanks in advance.

Easy way to check that is to connect a different keyboard (just have the keyboard hanging out by the cable) and see if that fixes it. Sounds like just a bad keyboard to me.

Hi Adamant IT. I know this maby not the right place to ask but I will try. Okay. The client is a Asus Z87-A motherboard, bought it used. I bought a new (used) cpu for it. when I was to slot in the cpu it did not go all the way down. At a closer look on the slot, there was a couple of bented pins. I was very careful when I bent the pins back. I got the cpu in the slot again and the computer fired up. Acted normal for about 10 min or so, then it shuts down. I have tried everything. changed the ram and so on, I even updated the bios but nothing helps. Runs fine for about 10 min. Do you have any suggestions? Or is it gone bad? I can`t see any bad signs on the board. I would really appreciate if you had any tips to give.

@@Adamant_IT Kind of looks like the battery overlaps with the keyboard/backlight, to a greater degree than in a 15" model, so might have to be removed completely. It's gonna be a fun job 🙈

Does the problem happen if you leave the laptop plugged in while off? Laptops from this era all have dying batteries, so that would be my first suspect. Bad batt causing SMC resets.
